CWGC has Private James Pitpladdy (77744) 15th Battalion Canadian Infantry (1st Central Ontario Regiment), commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.

The Barrow News 8 May 1920 had:

STAINTON HERO’S DEATH

POSTHUMOUS MEDAL RECEIVED BY PARENTS

Mr. and Mrs. Pittpladdy (sic), of Stainton, have received from the Canadian War Office, the 1914-15 Star and Ribbon, awarded to their son the late Private James Pittpladdy, (sic) 15th Battalion Canadians, who was killed in action on 21st May 1915.

The deceased, who was only 25 and well-known in the district, went out prospecting to Canada about nine years ago. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and came out with the first contingent.

The Canadian Great War Project gives his date of birth as 15 July 1887; his age at death as 27; and date of enlistment as 9 November 1914, at Victoria, British Columbia. As well as serving with the 15th Battalion, at some stage he was on the nominal roll of the 30th Battalion. The same information can be found on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial

In the 1901 Census living at Stainton (no house numbers or road names) were James Pitpladdy (44), Limestone Quarryman, born Urswick, Lancs.; Eleanor Pitpladdy (36), born Aldingham, Lancs; and their children, all born in Urswick, James (10), Christopher (9), William (6), Mary A. (3), Joseph (2), Margaret A. (10 months).

1911 Census

In the 1911 Census living at Stainton (no house numbers or road names) were James Pitpladdy (55) Gold Miner in South Africa on holiday, born Urswick, Lancs.; Ellen Pitpladdy (47), born Aldingham, Lancs.; James Pitpladdy (20), Son, Limestone Quarryman (rock-getter), born Urswick; Christopher Pitpladdy (19), Son, Labourer (Ploughman), born Urswick; Margaret Alice Pitpladdy (10), Daughter, School, born Urswick.

Drill sergeant of the Furness Cuirassiers

An interesting slate monument on the south wall of Urswick Church, east of the church door. The first ‘s’ of both double-letters look like ‘f’s, in the nineteenth century tradition.

I feared that I would have little luck finding out much regarding Thomas Gardner as an individual, although he probably had an interesting life.

The Life Guards were one of very few mounted regiments. Thomas may well have seen service in the Peninsular (sic) War (1807 – 1814) in Spain and Portugal, and possibly at Waterloo (1815), when Britain was fighting Napoleon.

A Cuirass is a piece of armour consisting of breastplate and backplate fastened together. (online dictionary)

Richard A Warren writes on his blog in November 2016: Apologies for my recent neglect of this blog, but here’s an uncommon button with the rose of Lancashire, inscribed “Furness Curassiers[sic]”, from a yeomanry troop that went in for a bit of post-war glamour. Neighbouring Cheshire may have boasted the Adlington Lancers among its yeomanry of the ‘twenties, but Lancashire went in for a proper piece of armour. The late R J Smith’s 1983 Ogilby Trust booklet on the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry narrates the formation of Captain Thomas Braddyll’s Furness Troop in 1819, noting that it was also known as the Furness Cuirassiers, and continues:

“There has been considerable doubt expressed as to whether the Furness Troop ever wore cuirasses, and it must be stated that no positive evidence has yet come to light, but it will be seen that available evidence tends to prove that the Troop were Cuirassiers in fact as well as in name. Major J E Willan of Silverdale wrote in the Yeomanry Record of October 1898 saying many years ago a Troop of Yeomanry raised in the Furness district wore the cuirass, and bright steel helmets with an enormous bearskin crest projecting in front … He had talked with old men who could remember seeing the Yeomanry crossing the Sands, going to and from Lancaster with their armour flashing in the sun.”

It’s a rather wonderful image. No attributed cuirass seems to have survived, but helmets of the Cuirassiers are known. In 1999 Bosley’s offered a complete example, which seems to have been that described in Crown Imperial of 1982 as quoted by Smith. It is of the 1812 to 1818 Heavy Dragoon pattern, with a blackened metal skull, gilt furniture and a black horsehair mane and short plume. The original front plate carries an oval plaque inscribed “Furness Yeomanry”, concealing the title of the original unit. (Smith describes the sides of the skull as decorated with metal leaves, but there is no sign of this in this photo, and this may be a reference in error to the laurel leaves ornamenting the edges of the front plate.) The example here is owned by Stuart Bates, and the image used with his kind permission.

Smith describes two other dilapidated examples, one now lost and one with a skull and peak of blackened leather. Evidently Captain Braddyll acquired a mixed lot of these redundant helmets on their retirement from regular service in 1818.

In 1828 the Lancashire independent troops, the Cuirassiers included, were amalgamated as the Lancashire regiment, the dress of the Furness troop was “assimilated” with that of Wigan, and the breast and backplates of the Cuirassiers flickered only in the sunlight of memory.

The Peace of Amiens was short-lived, and the militia was called out again: the 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia being embodied on 4 April 1803 under the command of Col Wilson Gale-Braddyll of Conishead Priory. From about 1804 the regiment's 10 companies included a rifle company. During the French Wars the militia were employed anywhere in the country for coast defence, manning garrisons, guarding prisoners of war, and for internal security, while the Regular Army regarded them as a source of trained men if they could be persuaded to transfer. The 3rd RLM was successively stationed at Exeter, Bristol, Gosport, Alton, Chichester and Dover. The regiment was granted the subtitle The Prince Regent's Own in 1813 (Col Gale-Braddyll was an associate of the Prince Regent).

The 3rd RLM volunteered for service in Ireland in 1813. Although most of the militia was disembodied after the Treaty of Fontainebleau in April 1814, the 3rd RLM was still in Ireland when Napoleon escaped from Elba and returned to power in France in 1815. The three regiments of Lancashire Militia, which happened to be stationed together at Dublin, were allowed to recruit back to full strength by ballot and 'by beat of drum'. They also provided drafts of around 1000 volunteers to the regular regiments being sent to Belgium. There is a story that many of the Guardsmen at the Battle of Waterloo were still wearing their Militia uniforms. The militia continued to do duty after the Battle of Waterloo while much of the Regular Army was with the Army of Occupation, and the 3rd RLM did not return from Ireland to be disembodied until January 1816.

An Act of 1817 allowed the annual training of the Militia to be dispensed with. So although officers continued to be commissioned into the regiment and the ballot was regularly held, the selected men were rarely mustered for drill. The 3rd RLM's rifle company was disbanded in 1829. In 1831 King William IV bestowed on the three Lancashire Militia Regiments the additional title The Duke of Lancaster's Own. (replacing the title 'Prince Regent's Own' carried by the 3rd RLM).

After the French Revolutionary wars and the defeat of Napoleon the armed forces were disbanded. Many of the veterans, particularly officers, subsequently raised units of volunteers. One such was the Furness Troop of Yeomanry known as The Furness Cuirassiers. They were raised at Ulverston on 22nd September 1819 under the command of Captain Thomas Richard G. Braddyll, formerly Captain and Lieut. Colonel in the Coldstream Guards. On 15th May 1828 the troop amalgamated with other local volunteer units to become the Lancashire Yeomanry Cavalry.

Given his age and the date of his death it is reasonable to assume that he may have fought in the Peninsula or at Waterloo.

A correspondent to the above website says: Private Thomas Gardner WAS at Waterloo. He was born in Ulberton, (sic) Lancs, enlisted in 1808 and was discharged in 1818 aged 29.

The Lancashire Online Parish Clerk has Thomas Gardner being buried on 12th April 1821, but whether this is (a) the same Thomas Gardner, or (b) whether this date or the one on the monument is wrong I cannot say.

Wellington’s Men Remembered: Volume 1 A Register of Memorials (Bromley & Bromley) 2012 quotes the Urswick stone, with the additional information .. “Pte 1809 Served in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. At Waterloo his horse fell on him and damaged his lungs. As a result of this fall and poor health which he encountered in the Peninsula he was discharged 23 Dec 1818. Served for 11 years and 60 days.”

This is reinforced by an entry on Ancestry for the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, Regimental Registers of Pensioners for January 1819, which has Thos. Gardner, age 29; who I think was discharged on 01 June 1820. His entry reads: served 9+ years in India; 2 Waterloo; Spilling of Blood from the Lungs by a fall from his Horse on the Chest at Waterloo and broken health from illness; 6ft 1in; a Labourer; brown (hair?); grey (eyes?); fair (complexion?).

Ancestry provides some information:

James Deason married Jane Clarke (sic) at Urswick Parish Church on 3rd June 1806, when he was 19 years old. There is a marriage bond dated 2 June 1806. This suggests that James Deason was from Newton-in-Furness, and Jane Clark was from Adgarley, both aged 19 years. James was buried on 12 January 1832, his age being recorded as 46 years in the Lancashire online Parish Clerk.

James Deason had a Land Tax Redemption entry to the value of 2d (less than 1p) in Great Urswick in May/June 1799, though whether this is the same James has to be questioned.

The grave of Francis Clark of Adgarley (d 1819), and Margaret Clark, his wife (d 1834), are close by. These are probably Jane’s parents.

There is also a record of the baptism of Margaret Deason, daughter of James Deason and Jane, born 14 August, baptised 13 September, 1806. There is no record of a death.

In the 1841 Census the following were living at The Gill, Ulverston:

Jane Deason (50), Independent; Joseph Deason (25) Joiner; Benjamin Deason (20), Joiner; William Deason (10), and Abraham Deason (10), both identified as joiners. Ages were rounded in the 1841 Census.

Elsewhere on The Gill were another family of Deason’s: James (30), joiner, his wife Mary (30), and son James (5).

A Joseph Deason is listed in 1855 Slater’s Directory as Coachbuilder, The Gill, Ulverston.

Benjamin Deason was buried in Ulverston on 30 May 1870. The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and administrations) 1870 has:

DEASON Benjamin The Will of Benjamin Deason late of The Gill in Ulverston in the County of Lancaster Woodmonger deceased who died 27 May 1870 at The Gill aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Richard Johnston of Dalton in Furness in the County aforesaid Book-keeper and William Shuttleworth of Ulverston aforesaid Coal Dealer the Executors. Effects under £3000.

Of course, I started out hoping to find more about John Neale, drowned in Laguna, Mexico. Laguna seems to be a landlocked province of Mexico, with a large number of lakes. Although there are records from Mexico on Ancestry, I could find no reference to John Neale’s death.

Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk

According to Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk, William Neale, son of Henry Neale, was baptised in Urswick 13 April 1782.

Marriage Bond No. 4602 (Ancestry) signed by Rev. Sunderland and dated 9 January 1812, says that William Neale, aged 29, of Bardsea, Mariner, intends to marry Agnes Crowdson, aged 23 years, of Greenslack, Kirkby Ireleth in the parish Church of Broughton (in-Furness). The marriage took place of 19th January. Agnes Croudson (sic), of Greenslack, parents William & Margaret Croudson, was baptised in that church on 22 March 1788. (Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk)

From the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk source comes the following:

Henry Neale, baptised 2 November 1812. Born 19 October. Son of William Neale and Agnes. William is identified as a Mariner.
Margaret, baptised 3 July 1814.
William, baptised 13 February 1816.
John, baptised 6 September 1817.
Richard, baptised 26 May 1819.
Thomas, baptised 24 November 1820.

William Neale must have made money from being a Mariner, since by 1832 he has the vote due to owning freehold land in Much Urswick. (Ancestry, Electoral Register for Lancashire).

1841 Census

In the 1841 Census, living in the Parish of Urswick (no house/road identified) were William Neale (55), Maltster; Agnes Neale (50); Henry Neale (25), Farmer; Thomas Neale (20), no occupation recorded; and Jane Kendal (15), servant. Ages in the 1841 Census were rounded.

1851 Census

The 1851 Census provides a little more detail. Living in Much Urswick are Agnes Neale (63), Widow, Farmer of 75 acres; 3 labourers, born Broughton; Margaret Neale (36) Unmarried, Farmer’s Daughter, born Bardsea; Agnes Neale (23), Farmer’s Daughter, born Urswick; Richard Neale (31), Son, Maltster, born Bardsea; Thomas Kitchen (48), Farm Servant, born Dalton; Lancelot Rigg (29) Unmarried, Farm Servant, born Hawkshead; John Fawcett (15), Farm Servant, born Cockermouth.

1861 Census

By the time of the 1861 Census, and still in Much Urswick, Agnes Neale (73), Widow, is now a Landed Proprietor. Sharing the house is Elizabeth (29) Daughter, born Urswick; and House Servant Mary Winder (14), born Urswick.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1870 (note year!) has:

NEALE Margaret 16 July Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Margaret Neale late of Urswick in the Parish of Urswick in the County of Lancaster Spinster deceased who died 28 January 1853 at Urswick aforesaid were granted at Lancaster to Agnes Satterthwaite of Urswick aforesaid Widow the Sister and one of the Next of Kin of said Deceased she having been first sworn.

William Neale

1851 Census

Of William Neale, the 1851 Census has William Neal (35) (no ‘e’) living on Duke Street, Ulverston. He is an Innkeeper. He lives with his wife Mary Neal (38), Inn Keeper, born Hawkshead, Lancs; and their Ulverston born children: Sarah Hodgson (15), Mary Hodgson (11), John Hodgson (13), William Neal (3) and Elizabeth Neal (6 months). There are four servants and a visitor staying on Census night.

William Neale had married Mary Hodgson in Ulverston Parish Church on 18 April 1847.

1861 Census

In the 1861 Census William Neal (45) Innkeeper, born Bardsey (sic), Lancs, is living on Dalton Gate, Ulverston, with wife Mary Neal (48), Innkeeper’s Wife, born Hawkshead; and several children: William Neale (13), Elizabeth Neale (10), Joseph Neal (8), Thomas Neal (5), and step-daughter Jane Hodgson (23) Unmarried, Servant, all born in Ulverston. There are two other servants, and two visitors. The next address in the Census is Hope & Anchor Yard, so it is likely that the Neale’s are running the Hope & Anchor.

William Neale was buried in Ulverston on 2 May 1862.

Richard Neale

1871 Census

Following Richard Neale tells us that in the 1871 Census he is unmarried, living in Much Urswick, aged 51, born Bardsea, Lancs, and is a farmer and owner of 20 acres. He shares a household with Agnes Satterthwaite (43), Widow, Sister, born Urswick; Elizabeth Neale (39), Unmarried, Sister, born Urswick; Margaret Logan (61) Married, Cousin, born Bardsea, Lancs.; and Servant Mary Cole (27), born Broughton, Lancs.

1881 Census

Richard Neale and Agnes Satterthwaite are still sharing a house in Much Urswick in the 1881 Census, though their servant, and the only other resident, is Annie Pickthall (18), born Ulverston, Lancs.

Agnes & Elizabeth Neale

Agnes Neale married John Sutton Satterthwaite in Urswick on 16 June 1858. (Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk). He is described as a banker, with his father John Satterthwaite being an Ironmonger. The bride’s father, William Neale Snr., is described as a Yeoman.

1861 Census

In the 1861 Census Agnes (33) and John Satterthwaite (35), Banker, born Ulverston, were living at Church walk, Ulverston, with their House Servant Mary A. Marr (22), born Millom, Cumberland.

John Sutton Satterthwaite died in Bangor, Wales, on 24 October 1867, and was buried at Urswick on 28 October.

His Will was proved by the oaths of “Richard Neale of Urswick … Gentleman and George Remington of Ulverston aforesaid Gentleman the Executors.” National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1868

1891 Census

By the time of the 1891 Census sisters Elizabeth Neale (63), Head, Living on Own Means, and Agnes Satterthwaite (59), also Living on Own Means, were sharing a house at Brow End, Urswick, along with their House Servant, Sophia Park (26), born Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Agnes Satterthwaite’s death was registered in Ulverston in September 1914.

Joseph Jackson

Another drowning victim, but unlike John Neale, named on another stone in the Churchyard, somewhat nearer to home than Mexico.

The lettering on the stone is very clear, another tribute to the stonemason’s skill.

As yet (October 2021) I have not found the detail of Joseph Jackson’s death.

Ancestry records that William Jackson (24) Stone Mason of Urswick, married Elizabeth Parker (22) at Aldingham Church on 11 February 1832. Joseph Jackson was baptised at Urswick 11 December 1836; father’s occupation waller, and the family was living at Beck House.

1841 Census

According to the 1841 Census, at Beck House, Urswick are William Jackson (30), Elizabeth Jackson (30); William Jackson (8); Jane Jackson (6); Joseph Jackson (5); Matthew Jackson (4) and Richard Jackson (2).

In the same house, but a separate household listing, were Jane Jackson (65), and Joseph Jackson (25), possibly William’s mother and brother.

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census the Jackson family are still living at Beck House, Urswick. The household contains William Jackson (43) Head, House Builder, born Dalton-in-Furness, Lancs.; Elizabeth Jackson (41) Wife, Schoolmistress, born Little Urswick; Jane Jackson (16) Unmarried, House Work, born Little Urswick (as were all the remaining members of the household; Joseph Jackson (14), Son, Waller; Matthew Jackson (12), Son, Scholar; Richard Jackson (10), Son, Scholar; Eleanor Jackson (4) Daughter, Scholar; James Jackson (2), Son; and William Simpson (20), Waller apprentice. Also listed for Beck House, but again in a different household, are Jane Jackson (72) Widow, born Dalton, and Joseph Jackson (39), Waller, born Dalton.

Hannah Petty baptised 7 July 1780. Daughter of Thos. Petty.

The Petty’s lived at Wellhouse. In no baptismal record is Mrs. Petty’s name recorded. All the children except Thomas and John are mentioned on the gravestone.

None of the daughters appear to have married.

1841 Census

At the time of the 1841 Census, which did not collect as much information as subsequent Censuses and rounded many ages, living on Cavendish Street, Ulverstone (sic), were Margaret Petty (65), Mary Petty (65), Jane Petty (60), and their servant is Mary Welsh (35). John Whineray (30), Blacksmith, also lives at the same address.

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census, Margaret Petty (78), Gentlewoman, born Urswick, is living with her sister Mary Petty (76), Gentlewoman, born Urswick at Queen Street, Ulverston. Mary Welch (47), is still their house servant, born Urswick.

There may be another family link worth pursuing, of someone not mentioned on the headstone. Thomas Edmund Petty (25), Curate of Bardsea, born Preston, Lancs, was lodging in Bardsea in the 1851 Census. Elsewhere we can find out that his parents were Thomas and Lucy Petty. He, transcribed as Thomas Edward Petty, married Agnes Remington in Urswick on 22 September 1852. He died in the second quarter of 1854.

George Shaw Petty

A very faint Marriage Bond on Ancestry dated 11 April 1819 says that George Shaw Petty intended to marry Hannah Fell.

In the 1824 Baines’ Directory for Lancashire PETTY G. Shaw of Fell Mount, Pennington, is listed as a Banker and Wine Merchant.

1861 Census

Whether it is the same house can’t be certain, but in the 1861 Census George S. Petty (71) Banker, born Urswick, is living on Queen Street Ulverston. His wife is Hannah Petty (67), Banker’s Wife, born Pennington, Lancs. There are two servants: Betty Rigg (40) Unmarried, Housekeeper, born Ulverston; and Elizabeth Croudson (26) Unmarried, House servant, born Ulverston.

1871 Census

In the 1871 Census George S. Petty (81) Retired Banker and his wife Hannah (77) are living at Stockbridge House, Stockbridge Lane, Ulverston, along with Sarah Jane Petty (38), Unmarried, Daughter; Ann Atkinson (63) Married, Cook (Domestic), born Settle, Yorkshire; and Mary Postlethwaite (27) Unmarried, Waitress, born Pennington, Lancs.

The last named on the gravestone, Thomas Shaw Petty, possibly never lived in Urswick. In the 1861 Census Thomas S. Petty (34) Flax Spinner?, born Ulverston, Yorkshire (sic) was lodging with others at 2 Houghton Terrace, North Meols, Southport, Lancs.

1880 Electoral Register

By the time of the 1880 Electoral Register his address is 51 Boundary Road, London, N.W. By the 1900 Electoral Register he is at 123 Mount Street (but see address in next paragraph but one), London W. In both cases he is qualified to vote in Urswick due to owning “freehold land in Little Urswick, occupied by John Bentham.”

1881 Census

In the 1881 Census Thomas S. Petty (54), Living on Land and Railway Shares, is a boarder at 51 Boundary Road, Hampstead, where Ann Parry (42) is Head, born Gloster (sic). He is the only boarder, though Ann Parry’s two nieces from Ireland live there, and a single servant.

1891 Census

The 1891 Census finds Thomas S. Petty (64) Living on Own Means, born Ulverston, Lancs., living at 128 Mount Street, St. George, Hanover Square, London. His Visitor is Ann Parry (48) Single, Living on Own Means, born Gloucester. His old landlady! There is also a single servant.

1901 Census

Thomas is still at this address in the 1901 Census, living on his own, and identified as a Retired Flax Spinner (Employer).

National Probate Calendar

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1904 tells us that Thomas Shaw Petty left Effects valued at £60267 2s 6d, equivalent to about £7.5m in 2021.

He was probably one of the proprietors of the firm of German, Petty & Co., Flax Spinners, of Preston.

The Gale family represented here were members of the local Gentry, and their lineage is linked with military careers, and local clergy, and other members of their social class. Henry and his wife had their portraits painted early in their marriage.

Henry Richmond Gale was a Major in the 20th Light Dragoons by April 1783.

“Gale was born in 1760, the son of John Gale (1729-1814) of Highhead Castle and Sarah Wilson (1728-1774) of Conishead Priory, Cumbria. Gale was one of five children. His older brother, Wilson Gale (1756-1818), inherited Conishead Priory through his mother and later assumed the name Braddyll. As was common in the eighteenth century, Gale, being the second son, joined the army though he saw very little, if any, action.

Gale served in the 7th Light Dragoons as first a coronet and then a lieutenant from 1778 until 1782 when he joined the 20th Light Dragoons and was promoted to Captain. When they were disbanded in 1783 Gale went on half-pay retirement as a Major and remained on half-pay for the rest of his life. Neither the 7th or 20th Light Dragoons served outside Britain. Gale’s promotions thereafter simply followed the formalities for retired officers. Gale became lieutenant colonel in 1794 then colonel in 1798, major general in 1805 and finally lieutenant general in 1811.

Although missing out on Conishead Priory which went to his elder brother, Gale inherited the Italianate Bardsea Hall. Although the house was destroyed many years ago, the triangular shaped folly within the historic grounds remains, each of the three sides facing the original homes of the family branches; Wilsons of Bardsea Hall, the Braddylls of Conishead Priory and the Gales of Whitehaven.”

Lancashire Online Parish Clerk says the Henry Richmond Gale buried in Urswick married Sarah Baldwin at Aldingham on 9 November 1785. Sarah was the daughter of Rev. Roger Baldwin, Rector of Aldingham, who has his own entry on this website.

Gales buried in Urswick

Henry Richmond Gale was buried at Urswick on 9 February 1814. His son of the same name died on 21 May 1802 aged 11 years, and was buried on 24 May 1802. Other Gales buried in Urswick include: John Gale, aged 85, (Henry’s father) of Charles Street, Covent Garden, London, was buried at Urswick on 6 November 1814. John’s wife, Sarah, of Bardsea Hall, had been buried on 15 October 1774. Another Gale, Robert Townley Parker Gale, [son of William Gale and Cecilia) of Aldingham Hall, died as an infant (D of Baptism 14 August 1828) and was buried on 31 January 1829. William Gale, of Bardsea Hall, and 77 years old, was buried on 5 December 1865.

Another document on Ancestry is Sarah Gale’s application for a Pension. It states that she has only £25 per annum ‘on the companionate list’, and has been left in ‘very moderate circumstances’. The date appears to be 17 October 1818, and she was living at Acton Terrace, Turnham Green, London. Rev. William Ponsonby, Minister of Urswick, provides supporting evidence of both marriage and burial (of Henry Richmond Gale), but the document does not say whether her application was successful.

Henry Richmond Hoghton Gale, son of William Gale, Gentleman, and Cecilia, was baptised at Urswick on 24 June 1830. This Henry Richmond Hoghton Gale is listed in Thom’s Directory of Great Britain and Ireland 1871 as living in Bardsea Hall.

One of this Henry’s children was named Henry Richmond Gale: “(who) was born on April 16, 1866, to Emma and Henry Richmond Hoghton Gale. The family lived at Bardsea Hall, Ulverstone, Lancashire, England. He was first educated at Elstree and then in 1880 went to Harrow School in Middlesex and was in the Shooting VIII for two years. Gale attended the Royal Military College in Woolwich where he obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1885. He soon went to South Africa, and his work there and knowledge of the languages caused him to be sent out later, just before the outbreak of the Boer War, in which he acted as Intelligence Officer in Rimington's Corps of Guides, 1899-1902, obtaining two brevets and two medals with ten clasps.

On May 6, 1903, he married Kathleen Jane Villiers-Stuart and they had three children: Kathleen, Lois and Ethne. …

In the Great War he was in France, in the Ypres salient and in Flanders. He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916 and was Assistant Director of Works, 1916-17, and chief engineer, 1917-18. He retired with the rank of Brigadier-General and in 1919 moved to Victoria on Vancouver Island where he built a neo-Tudor manor house called 'Bardsey'.”

John Braithwaite

According to a family tree on Ancestry, John Braithwaite was born in Aldingham in 1744, married first Agnes Briggs (d 1770) with whom he had 1 son and 1 daughter, and then Hannah Kendall on 30 January 1774 (d 1821) at Aldingham, with whom he had 4 sons and 3 daughters. Agnes’ son John Braithwaite died in 1770, so it is quite possible she died in childbirth

John was baptised on 10 Nov 1744 at Aldingham. The Lancashire online Parish Record project spells his name without a final ‘e’. His parents were William and Elizabeth Braithwait, living at Beicliff (sic). From the same source it appears they only married on 5 August 1744, and Elizabeth’s maiden name was Fleming.

There is a marriage Bond between John Braithwaite and Agnes Briggs dated 22 May 1768, which can be found on Ancestry. They married on 24 May. A second Marriage Bond, dated 27 January 1774, is between Jno. Brathwaite (sic) of Holebeck, Aldingham and William Kendall of the same place, Husbandman, arranging the marriage of John to Hannah Kendall.

John’s daughter Agnes was baptised at Aldingham 11 December 1774; son William at Aldingham 24 March 1776 (living at Gleaston); daughter Hannah (William Bouskell’s mother) 25 Han 1778.

A daughter Agnes was baptised in Urswick 20 August 1780; Mary on 15 June 1783; twins George and John (on gravestone) on 9 April 1786, living at Little Urswick; another John on 29 June 1788; daughter Margaret on 8 Jan 1792.

William Bouskell

Hannah Brathwaite, spinster (26), married John Bouskell, cordwainer (25), both of Urswick, at Urswick Church on 23 November 1805.

William Bouskell was baptised in Urswick on 18 October 1812. In several of the Ancestry transcriptions his named is spelt Bowskill or Bowskell.

Another family tree on Ancestry has: When William Bowskill was born on 28 September 1812. His father, John, was 31 and his mother, Hannah, was 31. He married Jane Kendall at St Mark’s, Liverpool, on 18 August 1842. His father John Bouskell is a shoemaker, and Jane’s father Edward is a farmer.

According to the same source, his widow, formerly Jane Kendall and from Arrad Foot, remarried to Edward Davis Goulding in December 1844.

Lloyd’s Register of Shipping 1843-44 tells us that the Barque “Dyson” was of 267 tons, registered in Liverpool, built in Liverpool in 1826; owned by Tyrer and Co., and sailed between Liverpool and Africa. Later in the year, presumably after William’s death, it was captained by Crocket, owned by Nicholson, and sailed between Liverpool and Montreal. Bouskell had taken over the captaincy sometime between July 1841 & June 1842.

From 1845-55 it was owned by Nicholson & McGill, Liverpool.

On a German website I found “document dated 3-2-1854 at port of Dumfries whereby John Martin of Glencaple shipowner county Dumfries,

has sold for £ 312.10 to James Halliday iron monger of Dumfries, 8/64 part of the saling vessel the barque

"Dyson" of Dumfries 267 tons. Master of that ship Charles Henery Williams. Ship was build 1826 at Liverpool

in county of Lancaster. [Dumfries-6a/d]”

She sailed to the West Indies in 1858, by which time she was owned by Martin & Co.

Another imposing chest tomb, with very clear lettering, a credit to the stonemason.

John Clayton proved rather elusive. The book for the relevant date of burial is missing, and does not appear on the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerk website.

I did find him on the Electoral Register 1835, by dint of owning a dwelling house on Queen Street, Ulverston.

The Will with a Codicil of John Clayton late of Ulverston in the County of Lancaster Draper deceased who died on 21 February 1844 at Ulverston aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of William Russel (sic) of Sandside near Ulverston aforesaid Maltster the surviving Executor. Probate being granted under certain Limitations. Former Grant Consistory Court at Lancaster within the Archdeaconry of Richmond in the Diocese of Chester May 1844.

Also in the Archive Centre is a copy of a Will made on 28 September 1842, with a codicil dated 20 February 1844 (BDHJ/189/4/31) which reads (edited version)

“This is the last Will and Testament of me John Clayton of Lancaster … my Estate called the Wellhouse consisting of a Dwelling House Outhouses and Closes and parcels of land with Right of Common situate lying and being within the Township of Osmotherley in the Parish of Ulverston. ….. Dwelling house and shop situate in Queen Street in Ulverston aforesaid and my pew in St. Mary’s Church there and all my Cottages or Dwelling houses respectively situate in Baycliff in the Parish of Aldingham and at Tarleton …..

Unto James Newton of Aldingham Hall in the Parish of Aldingham in the said County gentleman James Greaves Barton of Ulverston in the County aforesaid gentleman and William Russel of Bardsea in the parish of Urswick in the County aforesaid maltster.” (Executors)

In the will he gave:

“1 An Annuity of twenty pounds to William Cooper the elder of Scales .. yeoman.

2 To the children of John Cooper of Baycliffe (sic) (William’s brother) ten pounds apiece.

3 To Margaret Russel of Bardsea two hundred pounds.

4 To each of Margaret Russel’s brothers and sisters (except Brother John) and to the child of their deceased sister who married John Hunter ten pounds each.

5 To John Russel five pounds annuity.

6 To the children of William Deason of Urswick blacksmith ten pounds apiece.

7 To the children of James Hayes formerly of Liverpool (who married my cousin a relative) the sum of ten pounds apiece.

8 To my housekeeper or servant Ann Bowness (?) two hundred pounds. (The codicil changed this to an annuity of twenty pounds).

9 Divide the residue between William Russel and Margaret Russel and their brother Robert Russel.

National Probate Calendar

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1862 has SMITH Esther Francis 24 July Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Esther Francis Smith (Wife of Henry Smith, Esquire) late of Bankfield near Ulverstone in the County of Lancaster deceased who died 16 September 1860 at Bankfield aforesaid were granted at the Principal Registry to the said Henry Smith of Bankfield aforesaid he having been first sworn.

Esther had an interesting, if short, life. She was born in Wales, as Esther Francis Richardson (father John, mother Elizabeth Richardson) on 15 December 1831, and was baptised in Oystermouth, Glamorgan, on 21 June 1842. She married Robert Ogilby Moore in the Swansea Registration district in the third quarter of 1849.

R. Ogilby Moore appears in the April 1847 Boyles London Court and Fashionable Guide living at 16 Sussex Place, Regent’s Park, London.

Esther Moore gave birth to a daughter, Mary Isabel Moore, born 12 October 1852, was baptised in St. Mary, Bryanston Square, on 23 November 1852. Robert is described as a Merchant. The address listed is 25 Sussex Place, Regent’s Park, London. She baptised a son, Henry Augustus Moore (DoB 2 May 1854) on 29 July 1854 in Wimbledon, Surrey.

A family tree on Ancestry (Perry_Colin) identifies 3 children: Elizabeth Mary Moore, born 21 August 1850, died 25 October 1850 (Address 1 Westbourne Terrace); Mary Isabel Moore, born 12 October, 1852, died 9 May 1853; Henry Augustus Moore born 2 May 1854, died 21 October 1854. Robert Ogilby Moore died on 22 April 1855, aged 45 years.

Esther married Henry Smith in St. James’, Paddington, on 5 March 1859. Henry was unmarried, with the addresses of Bankfield, Ulverston, Lancs., and St. James’, Paddington. His father is Richard Smith, Esquire. Esther Francis Moore is a widow, of Melcombe Place, Dorset Square (Very close to Marylebone Railway Station). Her father, John Richardson, is a Merchant.

Bankfield

What is known with some certainty is that by at least 1822 it had been acquired by Richard Smith, who was originally from the Isle of Man, but is subsequently described as being from Liverpool and later became a partner in the Ulverston Mining Company. The Ulverston Mining Company

The first reference to the Ulverston Mining company is in a lease dated July 1838, in which Lindal Cote mines were leased by the Duke of Buccleuch to George Huddleston (4 eighteenth shares), James Park (4 shares), Thomas Petty (4 shares), Charles Storr Kennedy (2 shares), Richard Smith (2 shares) and Henry Kennedy (2 shares), trading as the Ulverston Mining Company. The partnership was deemed to start at this time, but the lease implies that the partners were already in possession of the mines.

The 1861 Census records, living in Much Urswick, Henry Smith (30) Widower, Barrister, born Urswick; Henry Gordon Smith (7 months), son, born Urswick; and sharing the household were Ellen Cook (42) Unmarried, Cook, born Cartmel; Jane Brockelbank (sic) (32?) Nurse, born Lindale; Mary Ann Fuke (28?) Unmarried, Wet Nurse, born South Molton, Devonshire; Mary Ann Pickthall (16) Unmarried, House Maid, born Urswick; John Dixon (24) Unmarried, Footman, born Ulverston; Thomas Woodend (26) Unmarried, Coachman & Groom, born Kirby (sic) Lancashire.

1881 Census

In the 1881 Census living at Bankfield, Urswick, were Henry Smith (50), Barrister, born Urswick; Harry Gordon Smith (20), son of Barrister, born Urswick; Anne Scarlett (54), widow, born Bispham, Lancs; Mary Agnes Shuttleworth (24) General servant (Domestic), born Egton-cum-Newland; Isabella Shuttleworth (15) General servant (Domestic), born Egton-cum-Newland.

Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser 26 May 1881 carries the following column:

DEATH OF CAPTAIN SMITH: - Our obituary column this week, records the removal by death of the head of one of the old families of the district, Captain Henry Smith, of Bankfield, Urswick, at the early age of 50 years. The deceased held a captain’s commission in the militia and was a Cheshire magistrate, his father being lord of the manor of Seacombe, and formerly owner of the Seacombe Ferry. Up to within the past few years, Captain Smith resided in Cheshire, and was chairman of the Wallasey Local Board. Since his return to Bankfield, the state of his health precluded the deceased gentleman from taking any active part in public affairs, but he was a kind landlord, compassionate to his poorer neighbours, and was held in great esteem by his friends. His remains were interred in the family vault in Urswick Churchyard, yesterday (Wednesday). Captain Smith leaves an only child, Mr. Henry Gordon Smith, now in his 21st year.

Henry Gordon Smith

Barrow News 6 August 1898 reported:

DEATH OF MR. H. GORDON-SMITH

We regret to announce the death of Mr. H. Gordon Smith, Late of Bankfield, Urswick, which occurred on Friday week at 15, Morpeth Mansions, Westminster, after a lingering illness. The deceased gentleman suffered from a complication of complaints brought on in the first instance by sleeping in a damp bed at Bury. Afterwards when regaining strength he went to Colwyn in Wales, where through a bad water supply he contracted blood poisoning. After a sojourn on the continent, he returned to London, where hemorrhage (sic) commenced, and this resulted in his death. Mr. Smith was of a very generous disposition, and possessed many hearty friends in this district, where his family have been known for many years. Mr. Smith greatly interested himself in the much vexed question of the Urswick water supply, and in order to meet the necessities of the occupiers of his property, he laid a private main at a cost of about £1200, the negotiations for the purchase of which by the Rural District Council are progressing satisfactorily up to the time of his death. The deceased has been removed at the early age of 38 years.

THE FUNERAL

In the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends, the mortal remains of the late Mr. Henry Gordon-Smith were laid to rest in the family vault in Urswick Parish Churchyard. The coffin, which was placed in a glass car, was conveyed by special train, leaving Euston at midnight, and arriving at Ulverston about 8-30 a.m. The funeral cortege, which left the Ulverston Railway Station at 10-30 a.m., consisted of the car containing the coffin, heavily laden with the choicest floral emblems, seven mourning coaches supplied from the Sun and County Hotels, and the private carriages of Mr. Myles Kennedy, J.P., and Mr. J. T. Newby-Wilson, J. P. The chief mourners were Colonel John Schneider, of London, Col. Baldwin, J.P., and Mr. R. Dawes, solicitor of Throgmorton-street, London. Among the general body of mourners we noticed Mr. Rutherford, solicitor, Liverpool; Mr. Myles Kennedy, J. P., Mr. J. T. Newby Wilson, J. P., Mr. James Hodgson, J. P., Mr. R. N. Todd-Newcomb, Mr. Dudley Wright, Mr. Scarlett, Storrs Hall, Major Machell, Mr. F. S. Ainslie, Mr. James Park, solicitor, Mr. James Park, junr., Mr. George Patrickson, Mr. Malachi Cranke, Mr. Wm. Cranke, Mr. R. Stables, Mr. John Atkinson, Mr. S. Grundy, Mr. Joseph Rawlinson, Mr. T. Coward, Mr. W. Brocklebank, Mr. Wm. Blamire, Mr. William Boulton, Mr. T. Braithwaite, Mr. John Smith, Alexandra-road, Mr. John Smith, the Ellers, Mr. T. Bradshaw, Mr. F. Whiteway, and Mr. R. Benson, of Ulverston; Mr. J. P. Brockbank, Mr. John Lowrie, Mr. James Cooper, Mr. John Croasdell, Mr. E. Holmes, Mr. S. S. Lord (Barrow), Mr. James fell, Mr. James Wilkinson, Mr. Robert Dobson, Mr. Mark Vickers, Mr. Joseph Stables, and Mr. J. Pattinson. The following representing old tenants and servants of the deceased, acted as bearers:- Messrs Sam Woods, Joseph Woods, Richard Woods, W. T. Jackson, Wm. Dixon, W. W. Wilkinson, and E. Pickthall. The burial services were most impressively read by the Rev. R. B. Billinge, vicar of Urswick. The body was encased in a shell, placed in a lead coffin, the outer case being of English oak, mounted with gilt furniture. The plate bore the following inscription: - “Harry Gordon-Smith, born September 5th, 1860; died August 5th 1898.” Wreaths, etc., were sent by the following: - “A.G.S.”, Col. John Schneider, Col. Baldwin, Mr. Richard Dawes, Mr. R. N. Todd-Newcomb, Mr. James Park, Col. Sanderson, Mr. Harry Schneider, Mr. John Smith, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smelt, Mr. J. Bridson Seatle, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mayor, Mrs. P. H. Matthews, Mr. and Mrs. Warren, Mr. and Mrs. David Page, Bury, Mr. W. Dickinson, Lizzie Jackson, and the members of the Prince of Wales Lodge of Freemasons, Bury (of which the deceased was a P. M.), and Wm. and Alice Barleigh. The funeral arrangements were most satisfactorily carried out by Mr. Bangham (Bangham and Co., Buckingham Palace-road, London), and Mr. I. W. Jarvis, Ulverston.

Given his date of birth, and the date of death for his mother, Esther, it appears that she died of childbirth complications.

It is possible that Harry Gordon Smith is the Gordon Smith (10), born Ulverstone (sic), Lancs, who is a scholar with Mrs. Lang, Head of School, Wellesley? House, Waterloo Park, Liverpool, in the 1871 Census.

Although there is no mention of family above, Harry Gordon Smith (22), Bachelor, son of Henry Smith, Barrister, of Ulverston, married Jane Eveline Butcher (27) Spinster, daughter of Clement Edward Butcher, architect, on 8th June 1883 at St Mary’s Church, West Brompton, Middlesex.

The Electoral Registers give Harry Gordon Smith various addresses in London e.g. 1885 L2 Albany, Piccadilly, London W; 1894-95 2 Westbourne Crescent, Hyde Park, London W.

Richard & Rachel Anne Smith

Rachel Ann(e) Bennet(t) [The e & t vary between documents] was baptised at St. Paul’s, St. Paul’s Square, Liverpool on 3 October 1796, having been born on 31 August 1796. Her parents were Henry and Rachel Bennet(t). She married Richard Smith at St. George’s, Liverpool, on 31 August 1818, her 22nd birthday.

1841 Census

In the 1841 Census for Urswick Richard Smith (50), Independent (Means); shares the house with Rachel Anne Smith (40), and (presumably their) children Augusta Smith (20); Mary (14); Elizabeth (12); Margaret (7); John Bridson Smith (5). There were three servants: Anne Harrison (20); Jane Dickinson (15?), and Ellen Pickthall (15). Places of birth were not recorded in 1841, just whether they were born in the county (Lancashire) or not.

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census for Much Urswick Richard Smith (61), occupation “Landed Proprietor”, born Isle of Man, is living with his wife Rachel A. Smith (54), born Liverpool, and three servants, Ellen Pickthall (26), House Servant, born Urswick; Jane Johnson (20?), House Servant, born Coniston, Lancs; and Thomas Whinery (13), House Servant, born Carnforth, Lancs.

It appears that Rachel Smith was Richard’s second wife. In the Lancashire online Parish Clerk website, Richard Smith (23), Gentleman, from Liverpool, married Ann Fleming (26), from Urswick, on 9 February 1812. An Anne Smith was buried in Urswick on 11 November 1816, and an infant Richard Smith on 27 December 1816.

1861 Census

In the 1861 Census John Bridson Smith (25) was living in Aberystwyth, along with wife Annie (24) and children Richard Gordon Smith (3) and Augusta Henrietta Smith (10 months).

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1885 has:

SMITH John Bridson 30 October. The Will of John Bridson Smith formerly of Ambleside in the County of Westmoreland but late of Biarritz in France who died 5 April 1885 at the Villa de la Croisette Cannes in France was proved at the Principal Registry by Annie Smith of the “York” Hotel Albemarle-street Piccadilly in the County of Middlesex Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Personal Estate £825.
