There are a lot of Petty’s listed on the gravestone above the large family vault. Occasionally it has given the stonemason some difficulties e.g. Hannah’s entry has a smaller lettering for ‘widow’.

Mary Petty baptised 12 Feb 1775. Daughter of Thos. Petty.
Edmund Petty baptised 9 Nov 1776. Son of Thomas Petty.
Jane Petty baptised 28 Nov 1778. Daughter of Thomas Petty.
Hannah Petty baptised 7 July 1780. Daughter of Thos. Petty.
William Petty baptised 2 March 1783. Son of Thos. Petty.
Thomas Petty baptised 3 June 1786. Son of Thos Petty.

The Petty’s lived at Wellhouse. In no baptismal record is Mrs. Petty’s name recorded. All the children except Thomas and John are mentioned on the gravestone.
None of the daughters appear to have married.
1841 Census
At the time of the 1841 Census, which did not collect as much information as subsequent Censuses and rounded many ages, living on Cavendish Street, Ulverstone (sic), were Margaret Petty (65), Mary Petty (65), Jane Petty (60), and their servant is Mary Welsh (35). John Whineray (30), Blacksmith, also lives at the same address.
1851 Census
In the 1851 Census, Margaret Petty (78), Gentlewoman, born Urswick, is living with her sister Mary Petty (76), Gentlewoman, born Urswick at Queen Street, Ulverston. Mary Welch (47), is still their house servant, born Urswick.
There may be another family link worth pursuing, of someone not mentioned on the headstone. Thomas Edmund Petty (25), Curate of Bardsea, born Preston, Lancs, was lodging in Bardsea in the 1851 Census. Elsewhere we can find out that his parents were Thomas and Lucy Petty. He, transcribed as Thomas Edward Petty, married Agnes Remington in Urswick on 22 September 1852. He died in the second quarter of 1854.
George Shaw Petty
A very faint Marriage Bond on Ancestry dated 11 April 1819 says that George Shaw Petty intended to marry Hannah Fell.
In the 1824 Baines’ Directory for Lancashire PETTY G. Shaw of Fell Mount, Pennington, is listed as a Banker and Wine Merchant.
1861 Census
Whether it is the same house can’t be certain, but in the 1861 Census George S. Petty (71) Banker, born Urswick, is living on Queen Street Ulverston. His wife is Hannah Petty (67), Banker’s Wife, born Pennington, Lancs. There are two servants: Betty Rigg (40) Unmarried, Housekeeper, born Ulverston; and Elizabeth Croudson (26) Unmarried, House servant, born Ulverston.
1871 Census
In the 1871 Census George S. Petty (81) Retired Banker and his wife Hannah (77) are living at Stockbridge House, Stockbridge Lane, Ulverston, along with Sarah Jane Petty (38), Unmarried, Daughter; Ann Atkinson (63) Married, Cook (Domestic), born Settle, Yorkshire; and Mary Postlethwaite (27) Unmarried, Waitress, born Pennington, Lancs.

4 March The Will with a Codicil of George Shaw Petty late of Stockbridge House Ulverston in the Parish of Ulverston in the County of Lancaster Banker and Merchant who died 15 February 1872 at Stockbridge House was proved at Lancaster by Thomas Shaw Petty of Preston in the said County Manufacturer and George Petty of Preston Manufacturer the Sons the surviving Executors.

Thomas Shaw Petty
The last named on the gravestone, Thomas Shaw Petty, possibly never lived in Urswick. In the 1861 Census Thomas S. Petty (34) Flax Spinner?, born Ulverston, Yorkshire (sic) was lodging with others at 2 Houghton Terrace, North Meols, Southport, Lancs.
1880 Electoral Register
By the time of the 1880 Electoral Register his address is 51 Boundary Road, London, N.W. By the 1900 Electoral Register he is at 123 Mount Street (but see address in next paragraph but one), London W. In both cases he is qualified to vote in Urswick due to owning “freehold land in Little Urswick, occupied by John Bentham.”
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census Thomas S. Petty (54), Living on Land and Railway Shares, is a boarder at 51 Boundary Road, Hampstead, where Ann Parry (42) is Head, born Gloster (sic). He is the only boarder, though Ann Parry’s two nieces from Ireland live there, and a single servant.
1891 Census
The 1891 Census finds Thomas S. Petty (64) Living on Own Means, born Ulverston, Lancs., living at 128 Mount Street, St. George, Hanover Square, London. His Visitor is Ann Parry (48) Single, Living on Own Means, born Gloucester. His old landlady! There is also a single servant.
1901 Census
Thomas is still at this address in the 1901 Census, living on his own, and identified as a Retired Flax Spinner (Employer).
National Probate Calendar
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1904 tells us that Thomas Shaw Petty left Effects valued at £60267 2s 6d, equivalent to about £7.5m in 2021.
He was probably one of the proprietors of the firm of German, Petty & Co., Flax Spinners, of Preston.
