MR. S. ATKINSON, ULVERSTON.

The death occurred on Saturday of a well-known Ulverston young man, Mr. Stanley Atkinson, of 28, Lund-terrace, Ulverston. Thirty years of age, he was a well-known local footballer, playing for the Rovers F.C. and having had trials with Manchester City and other first class clubs. He served with the local Territorials eight years and saw service in France, being in the evacuation of Dunkirk, and was discharged from the Army about nine months ago. He leaves a widow and four children.

The interment took place in the Ulverston Cemetery on Thursday, the Rev. De Blogue, Archdeacon of Brazil (* see below) officiating at a most impressive ceremony.

The mourners were Mrs. Atkinson, widow; Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson, father and mother; Mr. and Mrs. A. Athersmith, father-in-law and mother-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. B. Atkinson, brother and sister-in-law; Mr. T. Atkinson, brother; Mr. and Mrs. Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Bradshaw, brothers-in-law and sisters; Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Athersmith, …. There follows a long list of mourners.

There were a large number of floral tributes including those from the Ulverston Sphinx A.F.C., Ulverston Rovers A.F.C., Schoolboy Pals, Tyson-square friends and neighbours.

Messrs. T. H. Cragild and Sons, of The Ellers, Ulverston, were the undertakers.

Made M.B.E. in the 1942 Birthday Honours list.  CWGC: Son of Herbert Henry and Frances Graham Campaign; husband of Ada Violet Campaign, of Portsmouth.  Attached HMS Dolphin, shore establishment. Dolphin was the home of the Royal Navy Submarine Service from 1904 to 1999.

Kent; Herbert H. Campaign (5) born Chatham, Kent; and Alec Clark (21) Boarder, Steam Engine Maker (Apprentice), born Deal, Kent.

Naval Lieut’s. Sudden Death In Barrow

The sudden death yesterday of Lieut. Herbert Henry David Campaign (47) R.N. of 2, Ilkley-road, Barrow, has been reported to the Barrow Police. He had 32 years in the Service. He had complained of pains in the chest at different periods during the last twelve months, but they had been severe in the past week. At 5.20 a.m. yesterday his wife awoke, owing to his apparently snoring and spoke to him, but got no reply. She then noticed he was in a kind of coma. She telephoned Dr. Swanson (sic?), who on arrival announced life extinct. He has submitted a probable cause certificate of coronary thrombosis.

The high respect in which the late Lieut. Herbert Henry David Campaign, R.N., of 2, Ilkley-road, Barrow, was held was evidenced at the funeral at Ulverston Cemetery on Monday afternoon.

Forty-seven years of age, he had had 32 years in the Service, and for some time had had duties at Barrow, where he had made many friends. He had complained of pains in the chest at times during the last twelve months, and they had been severe for a week or so. Just after five o’clock on the morning of Friday week, his wife awoke, owing to his apparent snoring, and spoke to him, but got no reply. Observing that he was in a coma she telephoned Dr. Swanson, who, on arrival, pronounced life extinct.

The Rev. F. Thompson, the Congregational minister, conducted the service in the church and at the graveside.

The mourners were Mrs. Campaign, widow; Mr. F. Campaign, brother; Mr. Joe Myers. Mr. Arthur Myers, and Mr. Walter Myers, nephews; Miss May Myers, niece; Mr. Wilson, the Misses Holden, Mr. Hawkins, Lieut. and Mrs. Southward, Miss Tees, Miss Booth, and Mrs. D.A. Cotman, who also represented Commander (E) D.A. Cotman, R.N.

Representatives from Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., were present.

A naval escort and firing party also attended.

Among the many beautiful wreaths were those from Rear Admiral C.B. Barry, D.S.O., R.N., and staff, Rear Admiral Le Motte, R.N., officers and ratings of H.M. ships, directors and staff, Naval Construction Works, Commander King, engineers’ officers, Royal Netherland Navy, officers of Royal Norwegian Navy, principal ships’ overseers and staff, Commander and Mrs. Aherne, friends in drawing office, Engineer Capt. Ascott and officers of staff, Admiralty overseers. Lieut. and Mrs. Southward, Chief and P.O.s E.R. Department of H.M. ships, engineering works managers, Engineering Dock Department, Commander and Mrs. Reeves, C.P.O. and P.O. of H.M. ships and principle (sic) and elect overseers and staff.

Naval ratings acted as bearers. Mr. W.J. Fox was the undertaker.

Herbert Campaign joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer on 15th August 1911 (nb different date) at HMS FISGARD and was given the Official Number M3268. He completed his Apprenticeship on 17th October 1915 but took three months longer than originally planned.

His first ship was the 23,000-ton battleship HMS KING GEORGE V, in which he served from 10th November 1915 until 3rd April 1916. He next joined the 26,350-ton Battle Cruiser HMS LION on 4th April 1916. In this ship he served at the Battle of Jutland on 31st May/1st June 1916. He left HMS LION on 3rd September 1917 and after a brief stay in the Royal Naval Barracks at Portsmouth he joined the Destroyer HMS LYCHNIS on 15th November 1917. He served in this ship until 1st July 1919, again returning to the Royal Naval Barracks on the following day.

On 7th October 1919 Herbert Campaign was drafted to HMS EXCELLENT (the Gunnery School) at Whale Island in Portsmouth. Herbert Campaign was married to Ada Violet Hawkins in Portsmouth in the 2nd Quarter of 1920 (Vol. 2B Page 1215). He continued to serve in HMS EXCELLENT until 10th February 1921 and then returned to the Royal Naval Barracks where he served until 7th September 1921.

On the following day he was drafted to Ascension Island in the South Atlantic where he stayed for thirteen months before returning to the Royal Naval Barracks at Portsmouth on 1st November 1922.

He then stayed in Portsmouth until 9th June 1925 and, the following day he was drafted to the Destroyer Depot Ship HMS SANDHURST ‘for the Destroyer HMS WHITEHALL’. This was only a very short draft as, on 1st August 1925 he returned to the Barracks prior to promotion to Warrant Engineer.

Herbert Campaign was promoted to Warrant Engineer on 1st October 1925. The date of his appointment to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for the Submarine Course’ was 7th December 1925, on 18th February 1926 he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA (4th Submarine Flotilla) on the China Station at Hong Kong ‘for Submarines’. In August 1927 he was serving in ‘Submarine HMS L1 as Engineering Officer’ (4th Submarine Flotilla, China Station) to which he had been appointed on 15th December 1926.

His next appointment was to HMS PEMBROKE (the Royal Naval Barracks) at Chatham ‘for Submarines in Reserve’. On 15th April 1929 he was appointed to the Submarine Tender HMS ROSS ‘for Submarine HMS L22 as Engineering Officer’ and, by July 1931 he was serving in the Submarine Depot Ship HMS MEDWAY (4th Submarine Flotilla) at Hong Kong ‘for Submarine HMS ODIN as Engineering Officer’ to which he had been appointed on 20th September 1930.

In January 1935 he was serving in ‘Submarine HMS SEALION as Engineering Officer’ to which he had been appointed on 19th December 1933 ‘standing by whilst building’ at the Cammell Laird Shipyard at Birkenhead ‘and on Commissioning’. He was promoted to Commissioned Engineer on 1st October 1935. He was appointed to the Submarine Depot HMS DOLPHIN at Gosport ‘for Submarines’ on 2nd February 1939. Herbert Campaign was appointed Lieutenant (E) on 26th January 1940 but is reported to be serving in HMS DOLPHIN in April 1940.

This is not a standard CWGC headstone, though it is similar in appearance. Robert Chapman’s CWGC headstone is in France.

Ulverston Soldier Killed In Action

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Chapman, of Moss Lea, Plumpton, have received notification that their only son, L.-Corpl. Robert Chapman, of the Coldstream Guards, has been killed in action.

Twenty years of age, he was educated at Lightburn Council School and the Ulverston Grammar School. Prior to joining the Coldstream Guards in August 1942, he was employed by Messrs. Murray and Baird, surveyors, Edinburgh.

CWGC tells us that Albert James Newton was the son of George Thomas Newton and Jessie Newton, of Grange-over-Sands.

The inscription is very personal:

GUARDSMAN J. A. (sic) NEWTON, ULVERSTON

The interment of the remains of Guardsman James Albert Newton, Grenadier Guards, took place at the Ulverston Cemetery on Wednesday. Aged 20, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Newton, of Grange, and died of wounds received at Numeguen (sic - Nijmegen) in September 1944.

The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Newton, parents; Sergt. Geo. Newton, brother; Jessie and Eveline (sic) Newton, sisters; Mrs. Tosh, grandmother; Kenneth Gee, (representing the Regt.), Mr. and Mrs. W. Pearce, Mr. A. Rushton, Mr. and Miss Beardsworth and Mr. Lamb.

PTE. GAITSKELL, ULVERSTON

The funeral took place at Ulverston Cemetery on Thursday, the Rev. H. S. Betts officiating, of Pte. John Gaitskell, of Ford Villa, Hart-street, Ulverston, whose death occurred at Maidstone. He was the son of Mrs. and the late Mr. J. Gaitskell.

The mourners were Mrs. Gaitskell, mother; Mr. Chorley, grandfather; Mrs. T. Gaitskell, sister-in-law; Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. I. Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. W. Robinson, uncle and aunts; Mr. Coulthard, Mr. Angus, Mesdames Williams, Caddy, Bryan, Athersmith, Croasdale, Miller, Atkinson, and numerous others.

The many floral tributes included tokens from the Spiritualist Church. The exors. of J. W. Higgin, Ulverston, were the undertakers.

CORPORAL W. R. POWELL, CONISTON

The death had occurred at Whitehaven Hospital of Corporal William Richard Powell (38), third son of the late Captain and Mrs. Powell, of Ulverston and Coniston. The late Corp. Powell joined the Forces at the outbreak of war and had seen much service in the Middle East, returning to this country with an escort of Italian prisoners some months ago. He developed a sudden illness three weeks ago, and was removed to hospital. He leaves a wife and three children.

ULVERSTON FATALITY

SOLDIER DISAPPEARED IN CANAL

“I find in this case that this unfortunate man was accidentally drowned.” remarked Mr. F. W. Poole, Coroner for Furness, at an inquest at Ulverston on Thursday on Sergeant (sic) Philip Reginald Harris, whose body was recovered from the Ulverston Canal on Wednesday.

Evidence was given that Harris, who was staying at Ulverston, but whose home was at 33, Mount-road, Barnsley, swam across the canal and rested on the other side for a short time. He commenced to swim back and was within about four yards of the bank when an eye-witness heard a cry for help and saw Harris disappearing under the surface.

WENT DOWN SUDDENLY

The Coroner asked if he had previously given any sign that anything was the matter with him and the reply was in the negative. Replying to a suggestion that he might have been struck with cramp, the witness said “he went down suddenly,” and all attempts at rescue were unavailing.

Inspector Quine described that after dragging operations the body was recovered.

Artificial respiration was tried and continued for three-quarters of an hour when a doctor arrived and pronounced life extinct. The canal was 60ft. wide and 10ft. in depth at the point where Harris went under. It was dirty and had a slimy bed, the bottom being very soft. Replying to Supt. W. Parker, witness said that inquiries had revealed that the bed of the canal was very muddy and there were weeds and broken bottles all over the place. It was thought that there was at least a foot of mud.

SERGT. P. R. HARRIS, ULVERSTON

The funeral took place on Saturday morning at the Ulverston Cemetery of Sergeant Philip Reginald Harris, of the Army Physical Training Corps, aged 25 years.

Sgt. Harris, who suddenly died whilst giving a swimming demonstration in the canal, was the younger son of the late Mr. Harris, and Mrs. Harris, of Barnsley. Before volunteering for the services, Sgt. Harris was a P.T. Instructor at the Littleworth Senior School.

A private service was held by the Army Padre (Captain Levison) at the Union Hotel.

The chief mourners were Mrs. Harris (mother), Mr. H. Harris (brother), Miss M. Harris (sister); Mr. Harris (uncle); Miss Waddington (aunt); Miss E. Mansfield, (fiancée); Mr. and Mrs. Mansfield; Miss I. Mansfield and Mr. G. L. S. Garratt (headmaster of Littleworth School), Misses Morris, Fletcher, Atkinson, Halsall and Sgt. W. Reid. The Vickers-Armstrong Bolt Store Dept. was represented by Misses Hogan, Ireland and Simson.

The bearers were Sgts. Boyes, Creerie, Dalgliesh (sic), Elliott, Macari, Linden, Robinson and Brown.

Floral tributes were received from Mother, Sister and Brother, Aunt Minnie and Family (Barnsley), Uncle Clement and Aunt Lucy, Aunt Minnie, Uncle John and Margaret, Miss Eveline Mansfield, Mr., Mrs. and Miss Mansfield and Mr. Garratt, Mr. and Mrs. Wright, Stanley and Tom, Miss Annie Burton, Mr. Rigby and family, Mr. and Mrs. Kell, Mrs. Atkinson, Margaret and Fred, Sgt. Anderson and Miss E. Garnett, Misses Tomlinson, Fletcher, Morris, Crawford and Pattinson, The Girls of the Bolt Stores, Vickers-Armstrong, Sgts. Mess Officers and Men of H. Q. Company, Lt. Col. G. G. Walker and all officers of the Battalion, Headquarters Coy., all ranks Men of the Battalion, Staff of the Northern Command of the A. P. T. C., Littleworth Senior School, National Union of Teachers (Barnsley) and the Ulverston A. R. P.

The Battalion to which he was attached gave him full military honours and the pipe band with muffled drums playing “Lament” led the funeral to the grave. Officers, N. C. O.’s and men of the Battalion followed the cortege. During the burial service the buglers blew the “Last Post” and “Reveille”.

Sgt. Harris will long be remembered by his comrades and many friends by whom he was so very well respected.

The grave was lined with Cumberland turf.

The funeral arrangements were undertaken by Messrs. T. F. Tyson and Sons, Ltd., Ulverston.
