Calendar of Prisoners for Lancashire

William was in trouble in 1923, and appeared on the Calendar of Prisoners for Lancashire. William Gordon Thompson (36) Plasterer, is committed from Ulverston on 23 August and sentenced on 1 November in Lancaster for Unlawful carnal knowledge. He was sentenced to 3 months (Div II). The Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 2 November 1923 reported that the offence was with a girl of 14, but no further details are included.

The committal proceedings are reported in detail in the Barrow News 25 September 1923. The girl said that she went to Atkinson’s house on a number of occasions to nurse the baby. She said that there had been numerous offences, and that Atkinson had given her money, ranging from 2s to 14s. Atkinson was arrested at the allotments on Bardsea Road, Ulverston, when he was about to commit another offence. He denied the offences except for the one when the police caught him.

The Thompson’s appeared in another court case in the Ulverston Police Court. The Barrow News 14 January 1928 reported that Martha Tabor was charged with stealing bedding and wearing apparel (surely, clothes? RMW) the property of Edith Thompson, 14 Tyson Square, Ulverston. Mrs Thompson had been in a nursing home from 8 August – 8 September 1927, and Mr. Thompson had engaged Mrs. Tabor to look after the children and do the housework. She had taken the things, and pawned them. Her defence was that Mr. Thompson had agreed to this. She showed the police the pawn tickets, and the Thompson’s agreed that she had returned some of the things. After listening to two character references the case was dismissed.

The 1939 Electoral Register

In the 1939 Electoral Register for Ulverston his address is 14 Tyson Square, Ulverston, along with his wife Edith and his son William Gordon Thompson (Jnr).
