MURDER OF AN ASKAM MAN ABROAD

Information has been received by Mrs. Pennington, Ireleth-road, Askam-in-Furness, of the death of her son, Thos. Tebay, aged 31 years, and the particulars given point to a horrible murder having been committed. On June 2nd, Tebay was waylaid in a lonely spot near Johannesburg and robbed of a considerable amount of money. When found by a pedestrian, he presented a sickening sight, his head having been fearfully battered in. He was removed to a dwellinghouse, and great care was taken, three doctors being constantly in attendance, but he never regained consciousness, and died on the 4th, two days after the occurrence, and was buried on the 6th. It is stated in the letter that two or three Cornishmen have been arrested by the police authorities, it being suspected that they concerned (sic) in the murder. The deceased left the Furness district six years ago. He leaves a widow and one child at Chorley. The deceased was a brother of Robert Hankey, who was killed in the ironworks some months ago.

SINGULAR FATALITY AT THE ASKAM IRONWORKS

On Thursday night, a strange accident occurred at the Askam Ironworks, whereby Robert Bradshaw Hankey, aged 20 years, living at Ireleth, met with an untimely end. Between seven and eight o’clock he was talking to some of the men at the works, and left them to attend to his own duties in one of the boxed bays of iron ore, which are emptied into the barrows by means of shoots. Nothing more was seen or heard of him until half-past ten o’clock, when a man found Hankey’s arm was protruding through one of the shoots. On examination it was found that the poor fellow was quite dead, the body being cold. The body was conveyed to his home. Deceased was a member and player in the Askam Football Club, and had occasionally been included in the first team. He was one of the picked fifteen to play against Carnforth on Saturday. Much sympathy is felt in the district for the bereaved relatives.

Another account says: - Hankey was working on the night shift, and was seen at 4.45 by Frederick Sirett, foreman. The deceased was then at his usual employment on the gangtree (sic – gantry?), and it is conjectured that in running down the shoot the metal had stuck, and with the intention of loosening it he got a crowbar. Whilst using this he must have overbalanced himself and fallen into the box, and dropped a distance of nearly 50 feet, landing at the bottom head first. He was quite dead when found.

On Saturday, Jno. Poole, Esq., opened an inquest at the Bay Horse Inn, Ireleth, before a jury, of whom Mr. John Noble was foreman. The evidence of Wm. Buxton, Thos. Proctor, Fred. Sirett, was taken, and they stated it was the duty of deceased to loosen the ore if it got stuck in the shoot, as it did sometimes when damp.

Deceased’s mother said the lad had often complained of the dangerous occupation, and had said that somebody would be killed. Accidents had occurred there before, but had not been fatal.

The inquiry was adjourned, so that further evidence could be got, and the jury and coroner see the place where the accident occurred.

THE FATAL ACCIDENT AT ASKAM. – The adjourned inquest on the body of Robert B. Hankey, was resumed at the Vulcan Hotel, on Wednesday, when the Company was represented by Mr. S. Hart Jackson, and the friends of the deceased by Mr. R. F. Thompson, Kendal. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death, adding a rider to the effect that there was not sufficient protection for the workmen, and in future there should be a rope suspended from a bar at the top by which the man in the box could escape.

SUDDEN DEATH AT ASKAM. –  On Friday morning (i.e. 11 December) a miner named John Hankey, residing at No. 1, Huddleston Row, Lots, Askam, died very suddenly. The man was seized with pains and grew seriously ill. Dr. Anderson, of Askam, being called out of bed shortly after midnight to visit him. The doctor was quickly in attendance. The patient seemed merely to be suffering from colic, and the doctor gave him some medicine. Hankey then seemed better for an hour or so. About 2 a.m., however, he suddenly staggered whilst in the kitchen, and fell down dead. The relatives quickly summoned Dr. Anderson, who was instantly in attendance, when he found that life was quite extinct. The deceased leaves a wife and a family of young children. He was employed at the Greenscoe mines, the property of the Furness Iron and Steel Company, Limited, of Askam, and has been about ten years in that neighbourhood. He was a strong-built fellow, with every appearance of health. Some time ago Hankey was employed filling ore at the back of the furnaces, and was also for a time engaged on the slag bank, so that he was well-known on the works.

FLT-LIEUT D. GRUNDY, ULVERSTON

R.A.F. colleagues of the late Flight-Lieut. Dennis Grundy, of Ulverston, acted as bearers at his funeral in Ulverston on Monday, and at the close of the impressive service in the Parish Church, bore aloft his coffin covered with the Union Jack as the mourners left the church.

The service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. J. S. Rimmer, R. D., assisted by the Rev. H. G. Underhill, and the choir was in attendance, Mr. W. Rogers being at the organ. It included the Psalm “The Lord is My Shepherd”, the hymn “For all the Saints who from their labours rest”, and Nunc Dimittis.

BARROW MAN MISSING

SERVED ON SUBMARINE REPORTED LOST

News has been received that Mr. Allan Fraser, 24 years-old son of Mr. James Fraser, 43, Ramsden Dock-road, is missing while on active service. He was an engine room artificer serving on the Barrow-built submarine H31, reported missing in January last and now considered lost. The boat was one of the old type and was in service in the last war. (sic)

Allan Fraser was educated at Barrow Island and the Grammar School for Boys, and served his apprenticeship with Vickers-Armstrongs as a coppersmith, in which department his father is head foreman. He completed his apprenticeship in June 1938, and had worked in London since then. He was married shortly before joining up in August 1940. He was in Barrow on three weeks leave in September of last year, when he stayed with his parents, who last heard from him in November 1941.

THE LATE LIEUTENANT MACAULAY

Colonel Macaulay, retired, of the Bengal Staff Corps, who resides in Ayr, has received from the Royal Engineers an expression of great regret at the loss sustained by the corps in the death of Lieutenant Percy John Frederick Macaulay (the eldest son of Colonel Macaulay) “whose short service gave the promise of a brilliant and successful career”.

Lieutenant Macaulay, who was killed in action in the early evening of Saturday the 3rd inst., during the Mahsud Waziri attack on the British camp in the Wano Valley, was the eldest son of Colonel C. E. Macaulay, and grand-nephew of the late Lord Macaulay, and also of the late Field-Marshal Sir George Pollock. He received his education at Marlborough College, and passed out of the Royal Military Academy in July, 1886, with honours, being the sixth on the list, and having won the prize for topography. He received his commission on July 24, 1886, and, after passing the usual course at Chatham, he was posted in October, 1888, to the Bengal Presidency. He began his active career at Ferozepore, in the Punjab, and after a short experience there of ordinary station work and of mountain survey in the Himalayas he was appointed in October, 1889, to the Public Works Department, and was posted to the establishment under the Director-General of Railways for employment in the Moghal-Sarai – Howra Railway Survey. After the completion of this work he was transferred to the North-West frontier in November, 1890, and employed in the survey of the Gomal and Zhob Valley Railway; and from this time forward to his death he has been engaged in dangerous railway and survey work in the Beluch and Afghan hills. For two years he was in charge of a section of the railway under construction through the Bolan Pass to Quetta and to the Peshin Valley, through the Khojak Range. In March last he was transferred to the Survey Department of India, and at once placed in charge of the northern or Kurram section of the demarcation of the Indo-Afghan frontier, as arranged for under the agreement concluded with the Ameer by Sir Mortimer Durand. He was occupied in the discharge of this important and dangerous duty during the whole of the past summer, and he had scarcely completed this work when he hastened down last month from Kurram to take part in the delimitation of the Waziri border from Domandi, on the Gormal river, to Larram Peck, on the Kurram boundary, joining the Commissioner’s camp on or about October 18.

“Frank was the only son of Alfred Russell Macaulay and Annie Jones. Alfred and Annie were both born in the county of Lancashire in England. They were married in 1876 and they had at least six children: Annie, Florence, Harriet, Ellen, Margaret and Frank. Frank was born on 16 March 1885 in London, England. His birth was registered as John Gordon Macaulay but he later used the first name Frank. By the time of the 1891 Census his family was living in East Ham, Essex, where Alfred was working as a railway clerk. Frank immigrated to Canada around 1903, at age 18. He spent some time in Toronto and served with the 48th Highlanders of Toronto, a militia unit, for two years (sic – his Attestation papers say 4 years). When the 1911 census was taken he was living in Keewatin, Ontario and working as a dry goods salesman. With his birth registered in Croydon in the second quarter of 1921, Flight Lieutenant Joseph Lawrence (sic) Moore died 25th June 1943, aged 22. He was piloting a Lancaster bomber (LM327-B) on a raid on Elberfeld, Wuppertal, Germany. His aircraft was shot down and all of the crew were killed.  He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Among the latest awards for bravery is that of Pilot-Officer Joseph Lawrence Moore of Mitcham, who has been granted the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Pilot-Officer Moore was born at Mitcham in 1921, and commissioned in the R.A.F. in May, 1939.

His parents now live at Ulverston, where he received his education at the local Grammar School.

One [RAF officer] I shall never forget was a Canadian, the Station Navigation Officer, Wing Commander McMillin. Tall, prematurely grey, and I suppose in his early forties, he had a cheerful word for everyone and was adored by the whole camp, men and women alike. He came into the Met Office regularly and knew all our names. It seemed that he was extra attentive to me, and I heard via the grapevine that he always referred to me as ‘the little Waaf with starry eyes’. He had come unscathed through all his ops and then was reluctantly persuaded to become Navigation Officer, but he couldn’t bear being grounded. Whenever any crew member was laid off sick, Mac was there taking his place. One day, a pilot named Flt Mort had a sick navigator, and Mac eagerly jumped into the gap, in spite of people telling him that he must be mad to fly with a man who had a name like that. But it was all to no avail. Off he went with Mort, beaming happily, so delighted to be flying again, and yes – you’ve guessed it – Flt Mort’s plane was shot down in flames and no one got out. Well, the whole camp went into mourning. It was as though we had all lost our favourite brother. There was a shadow hanging over Bourn for a time and nothing was fun any more. What was it all about when someone like Mac could be snuffed out, just like that? What was God doing up there – taking a nap? In the end, of course, we all pulled our socks up and got on with the job. What else could we do?
