Ireleth & Askam: St Peter’s Churchyard
St Peter's Church, Ireleth
St Peter’s Church (Grade II listed) was dedicated on St Peter’s Day, 29th June 1865, replacing an earlier chapel. It was built partly with the profits from the iron mines and is known locally as ‘The Iron Church’. Built by James Garden (see Dalton Cemetery), it is a simple structure, and stands high above the villages of Askam and Ireleth, overlooking the Duddon Estuary and the Irish Sea.
The churchyard is very steep in places, and periodically overgrown. I have no guided walks here. If you walk around independently, do take care: it is easy to turn an ankle or worse.
