27 (January 1848) John Kinish back smith and Farmer at Northsale Isle of Walney was Coming from the Market and set to cross [the ford] before it was tide he had a Horse and Cart with two young Piggs in it the wear all Drowned he had pertaken rather too freely of John barly corn the wear all found the next morning he was 45 years of age.

“This particular blacksmith’s shop was on the shore in the centre of the village.  It had been owned by Robert Greenwood of North Scale.  In his will dated 19th August 1838, Greenwood had left it to John Kinnish, subject to Kinnish paying an annual lease of 15s 0d to William and Agnes Turner of Dalton.  When John Kinnish met his unfortunate end, as detailed by William Fisher, it was found that he had no will, so the blacksmith’s shop passed into the ownership of his son Robert.  In a conveyance dated 10th August 1863, Robert Kinnish sold it back to Thomas Greenwood, son of Robert, for £50.  The blacksmith working the shop at that time was Abraham Slater, and he had been there for at least twelve years. …. Greenwood seems to have been a man of some substance, and later owned shares in some of the schooner fleet built at Ashburner’s yard across the channel at Hindpool.”

DEATH OF MR. W. M. McLUNG

WALNEY FARMER AND CONTRACTOR

A well-known and popular figure has been removed from Barrow by the death of Mr. William Murray McLung, of Daisy Bank, North Scale. He was 69 years of age. A native of Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Mr. McLung came to Barrow in 1900 to become manager of the Isle of Walney Estates Farm at North Scale. That was the year when a commencement was made with the building of Vickerstown, and some buildings on the island went up in mushroom growth.

The late Mr. McLung took an active part in the development of the Island. He continued as manager of the Isles of Walney Estates Farm until 1907, and having refused an offer by the late Lord Dunluce, then resident manager on the Island for the Isle of Walney Estates co., to become agent of the estates of his father, Lord Antrim, in Ireland, he started in business on his own account as a farmer and contractor.

His first job as contractor was carting material in connection with the erection of Walney, now Jubilee Bridge. He had an extensive business as contractor, and in that connection was associated with many buildings erected on Walney and in Barrow.

Mr. McLung took a keen interest in agriculture, and its associations. He was chairman of the Barrow Cattle Insurance Committee, secretary of the Barrow and District Ploughing Association since its inception, president of the West Shore Club, trustee of Vickerstown Institute of which he became a life member in 1937, a member of the Ulverston and District Agricultural Association, a member of the Clydesdale Horse Society, a member of the Ayrshire Agricultural Association, a member of Barrow St. Andrew’s Society, and a trustee of Walney Parish Church. He was contemplating purchasing an estate in Dumfries when he became ill recently. He had only been confined to his bedroom for two days prior to his death.

On coming to Barrow Mr. McLung introduced the Clydesdale horses and Ayrshire cattle to the district, which in later years became very popular.

The late Mr. McLung was a gentleman who was widely known and highly esteemed, and his death will create much regret. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter, the latter being in California.

The funeral of Mr. William Murray McLung, of Daisy Bank, North Scale, took place at Walney on Wednesday week, Rev. J. Langlands, of Walney Presbyterian Church, officiated at the service at the house and graveside in Walney Churchyard.

The family mourners were Mr. William McLung, son; Mr. William McLeod, jnr., nephew; Mr. Robert Dunlop and Mr. Wm. McLeod, Snr., brothers-in-law. Also present were Messrs. Hugh Rainey, James Fisher, Fred Forbes (Morecambe), John Foulas, John Bell, Wm. Clarke, Robert Hales, E. Crossley, S. Senogles, T. Wallace, W. Mitchell, H. Bell, T. Nicholson (Muncaster), W. Pickthall (Dalton), S. Gilliland, and John Jackson.

The bearers were employes (sic) of Messrs. W. McLung and Son, Messrs. H. Dixon, W. Dixon, Private S. McLellan, G. Milburn, J. Steele, W. Thompson, H. Jury.

Mr. John Bell, who also attended, had 35 years’ service with the firm.

SUDDEN DEATH OF THE REV. J. PARK

We regret to announce the sudden death of the Rev. John Park, vicar of the Isle of Walney, which occurred on Tuesday evening, in Wolverhampton. For some time past Miss Park, an unmarried lady, and sister of the late vicar of Walney, has been lodging at the house of Mrs. Adams, Queen-street, Wolverhampton. About a fortnight ago Miss Park was taken ill. She was attended by Messrs. Collins and Wells, of Queen-street, but on Monday her illness assumed a more serious form, and she died early on Tuesday morning. Information of her death was conveyed by telegraph to the Rev. John Park, who replied that he would come to Wolverhampton by the next train, and he arrived there about six o’clock on Tuesday evening. He at once proceeded to Mrs. Adam’s house, and within a few minutes of his arrival there he suddenly expired. A messenger was at once despatched to Messrs. Collins and Wells for assistance; Mr. Collins attended immediately, but his services were unavailing, life being then extinct. It is believed the rev. gentleman suffered from heart disease, and that his death was due to this cause, coupled with the grief and excitement he was under at the time, after the long railway journey. Information of the sad event was at once telegraphed to the Rev. R. P. Manclarke, vicar of St. James’s, Barrow, who made known the sad news to the widow. It has been arranged that the funeral of both Mr. and Miss Park shall take place at Walney. The Rev. J. Park was appointed to the incumbency of Walney in 1846 and has therefore held this office for 29 years. The living, which is worth upwards of £85 a year, is in the gift of the Rev. J. M. Morgan, vicar of Dalton and rural dean of Aldingham.

PASSED AWAY. – The death occurred, on Wednesday, at Biggar, of Jno. Gilliland, a gentleman who has been associated with local life for a great many years. Mr. Gilliland went to his present farm over 20 years ago, and his career in the agricultural line has been one of considerable success. Originally, he lived on the mainland, and at different times conducted a business as coal dealer and milk dealer. The latter line of enterprise was continued when Mr. Gilliland turned to farming, and has been maintained with the help of his sons up till the present time. Among the farmers of Biggar, Mr. Gilliland enjoyed popular intimation, and he was alike well known and familiar among the farming community of the entire island, and the wider area of Furness. Mr. Gilliland was 70 yrs of age (sic), but though the weight of years prevented him from giving that personal attention to his farm for which he was noted in past years, he did not fail to take a lively interest in the welfare of his property. Throughout the district, the death of a worthy farmer and genial personality is sincerely mourned, and genuine sympathy is extended to the members of the bereaved family. The interment takes place today.

HMS President was not a ship, but a shore establishment, officially an ‘accounting base’. Men were allocated to HMS President (I, II, III, IV, V or VI) when they were between ships, presumably to ensure that they still got paid. I could be wrong about this.

This grave shows the difficulty of finding out even fairly recent information. The Census is confidential for 100 yrs, so the last published information is from 1911. However, there is a family tree on Ancestry for Burt Todd, telling us that he was born in Chelsea, London on 12 July 1894; married Dora Michelmore in St. Matthew, West Kensington on 5 April, 1920. He had at least two children, Desmond (1921-1983) & Joseph (1933 -2013), and a second wife, Winifred (married in Malta, 14 Jan 1932 – died Portsmouth, 1946). Since this has been compiled by a family member it is likely to be accurate, and my speculations about spelling and being born in Dalton are likely to be irrelevant.

BARROW AIRMAN MISSING

TOOK PART IN RAIDS ON GERMANY

Official notification has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Colville, of 16, Plymouth-street, Vickerstown, that their eldest son, Flt.-Sergt. James Colville, of the R.A.F., is missing from operations over Germany and is believed to be killed.

Flight-Sergt Colville is 24 years of age, and was educated at the Barrow Grammar School, from which he joined the R.A.F. as an apprentice at the age of 16.

He was at Singapore for three years, and was there involved in a serious crash, being fortunate to escape with his life. He is a member of the Barrow Working Men’s Club and Institute. His father is district delegate to the Boilermakers’ Society.

Sergeant Colville was lost in a raid on Bochum on the night 5th/6th August 1942 alongside six other crew members in Halifax R9495 DY-L . They took off from Topcliffe for a raid on Bochum. On their way back to their base their a/c was intercepted by a German night-fighter, August Geiger, and shot down. The Halifax crashed 2 miles N .of St.Oedenrode. The entire crew was killed.
