Walney, originally a ‘chapel of ease’ (founded c1568), became a separate parish from Dalton in the C19th. Presumably, the admittedly small, population of Walney could not be expected to get to Dalton for services, especially with crossing the channel prior to there being a regular ferry. The present church is the third on the site, started in 1907 but not completed until 1930. The old chapel became too small as Vickerstown grew.
The churchyard is very steep around the edge. I have not guided walks here. If you walk around independently, do take care: it is easy to turn an ankle or worse.
