dedicated on St Peter’s
Day, 29th June 1865. It
was built partly with the
profits from the iron
mines and is known locally
as ‘The Iron Church’.

sections, each with their
own chapel: Roman
Catholic, Non-Conformist,
and Anglican.

The church was built as a Chapel
of Ease in 1642 at the cost of
Robert Dickinson, citizen of
London, formerly of Leece.

Chapels of Ease were built to make
church attendance easier for those
who had to travel a distance to
the Parish Church.

A small church in Penny Bridge,
and serving Greenodd down the
hill, St Mary’s was built as a
Chapel of Ease in 1791,
endowed by William Penny of
Penny Bridge Hall.

Like other churches in Furness,
the churchyard is very
colourful in spring, covered in
snowdrops, crocuses and
daffodils.

In the churchyard is a sundial
(listed Grade II), dated 1680.

A picturesque site on the edge of
the Tarn. The churchyard has a
large number of ancient
gravestones. In spring the
snowdrops, crocuses and
daffodils are magnificent.

Graves in Furness

This website continues to be a work in progress. There are 447 graves as I write. I am now (February 2025) adding graves that I have researched in the last few years, but not had the time to add. Many thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant in 2023 which enabled me to ask Windmill Websites to add new pages professionally.

I am also looking at the graves that Edward Sankey photographed, mainly between 1910 and 1920+, and seeing how they look now. Sankey's archive may be found at https://www.sankeyphotoarchive.uk/
