Barrow News Tuesday 10 December 1889 had a brief report:

DEATH OF DR. SYDNEY JOHNSON:

We have to announce the death of Dr. Sydney Johnson, which took place after only a week’s illness, at his residence at Far Old Park, near Ireleth, Askam, on Sunday morning, about seven o’clock, at the comparatively early age of 48 years. Dr. Johnson was a native of Laxton, near Newark, Notts, and came to Dalton as an assistant to Dr. Hall, upwards of 20 years ago, and remained in that capacity for several years. He married a niece of Dr. Hall’s, and started practising as a surgeon on his own account, and he soon had a large connection in Dalton and surrounding neighbourhood, his skill as a medical man being very highly spoken of. His abilities were excellent, and his knowledge very general. He was a member of the Dalton School Board for a few years, and also a Poor-law Guardian. He held the responsible position of medical officer of health under the Dalton Board for several years. He was also a member of the Local Board up to the time of his death, being elected for the East Ward in 1888. He held other minor offices in the town and district. He attended to his duties a little over a week ago, when he was attacked by paralysis and congestion of the lungs intervening. He leaves a widow and four children (three daughters and one son) to mourn his loss. The funeral is fixed for Thursday noon at the Ireleth Church.
