Son of the late Isaac and Margaret Burrow. Pupil of the Ulverston Victoria Grammar School and Student of St. John's College, York. Assistant Master at Dalton (Church of England) School. The Registration form has a typed Sgt., crossed out and replaced with Pvt. (Since he is pictured in a Sergeant’s uniform presumably he was at least an Acting-Sergeant – RMW) He is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont. His sister, Miss I. Burrow, of Lane House, Dalton, asked for the message “He died that we in peace might live” be inscribed on his headstone. CWGC
1891 Census
1891 Census the Burrow family were living at 2 Market Place, next to the Cavendish Arms. The household was Isaac Burrow (46), head, joiner and builder, born Warton; Margaret (38), born Dalton; Isabella H. (5), born Dalton; and John (5 months), born Dalton, plus Sarah Evans (17) General Domestic Servant, born Dalton.
1901 Census
By the 1901 Census they had moved to 1A Chapel Street, and Isabella was a Pupil Teacher. They no longer had a live-in servant.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census John was a Boarder at York Training College. His parents were at 2A Chapel street, Dalton, where Isaac Burrow was now a Joiner and Undertaker. Isaac Burrow died on 21 May 1914.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1919 had BURROW John of 2a Chapel-street Dalton-in-Furness Lancashire private 1/4th battalion King’s Own Royal Lancashire (sic) regiment died on or since 8 August 1016 in France on active service Administration London 6 November to Margaret Burrow widow. Effects £124 17s 7d.
