DALTON SOLDIER’S DEATH
Pte. John S. Jardine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jardine, Market-street, Dalton, is officially presumed dead. Pte. Jardine was a very popular young man in Dalton, and before joining the A.S.C. in June 1916, was employed by his father.
He was transferred to the 8th Lincolns. He was a member of the Dalton Conservative Club.
From various documents on Ancestry we know that he was baptised 23 June 1895 at St Mary’s?, Dalton.

At the time of the 1901 Census living at 83 Market Street, Dalton were John Suttor (69), Widower, Retired Baker, born Carlisle; Stephen Jardine (35), son-in-law, born Staveley, Westmorland; Mary J. Jardine (34), daughter, born Newcastle, Durham (sic); John S. Jardine (5), grandson, born Dalton; alongside General Domestic Servant Isobel Tyson (23), born Urswick.
1911 Census
By the 1911 Census, still at 83 Market Street, the household comprises Stephen Jardine (45), Baker & Confectioner, born Staveley, Westmorland; Mary Jane Jardine (44), Assistant in Buisness (sic), born Newcastle-upon-Tyne; John S. Jardine (15), Baker, born Dalton; Margaret Jardine (9), School, born Dalton; and Edith A. Bland (22), single, General Domestic Servant, born Pennington.
Again on Ancestry, it appears that John Jardine had various service numbers: 30878 Norfolk Regiment (War Medals Index); 184977 RASC (Royal Army Service Corps), as well as his Lincolnshire Regt no. 41704.
