BARROW PILOT FOR OVER 35 YEARS

DEATH OF MR. E. R. CHARNLEY

Pilot at Barrow for over 35 years before ill-health forced him to retire over three years ago. Mr. Ernest Richard Charnley, member of a well-known Barrow seafaring family, died at his home, 30, Roa Island, on Tuesday.

Brother of Mr. Ebbe Charnley, coxswain of the Barrow lifeboat, the late Mr. Charnley was a member of the crew.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom is at sea, his ship being at present in New Zealand waters.

THE FUNERAL

The funeral took place at Rampside on Thursday, the service being conducted by the vicar, the Rev. H. Robinson.

Family mourners were Mr. Maurice Charnley, son; Miss M. Charnley, sister; Mr. W. K. Charnley, brother; Mr. and Mrs. J. Charnley, brother and sister-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Christopherson, Mrs. Warburton, Mr. and Mrs. Kirkham, and Mr. R Kirkham, brothers and sisters-in-law; Mr. K. Charnley, Mr. G. Charnley, Mr. J. Christopherson, Mr. E. R. Christopherson, Mr. C. Kirkham, nephews.

The bearers were Mr. J. Wells, Capt. C. Raby, Mr. R. Raby, Mr. G. Charnley (representing the crew of the pilot cutter), Mr. J. Moore and Mr. F. Moore (representing the lifeboat crew).

Other mourners included Mr. W. L. Allen (Town Clerk – representing the Sub-Commissioners of Pilotage), Capt. Coates (Harbour Master), Mr. W. W. T. Taylor (representing Messrs. James Fisher and Co.), Mr. M. Johnson (Rampside).

The wreaths included those from the Trinity House pilots, Messrs James Fisher and Co. and staff, and the Working Men’s Club.

Mr. W. J. Fox, Rawlinson-street, made the funeral arrangements.
