Thomas Winder, son of Jonathan and Sarah Winder, was baptised on 10 December 1847.
1851 Census
Thomas Winder (3) first appears in the 1851 Census living at Baycliff (sic), Lancs. There are no house numbers or street names. His father Jonathan Winder (53) is a Cordwainer and Post Messenger, born Aldingham, Lancs. The rest of the household is mother Sarah Winder (43?) born Gleaston, Lancs; brother John Winder (7) no occupation recorded, born Aldingham, and four lodgers: Thomas Shaw Hood (28) Unmarried, Plumber & Glazier, born Castle Donington, Leics; Walter Packer (21) Unmarried, Plumber & Glazier, born Nottingham; Thomas Law (24) Unmarried, Lodger, Joiner, born Casterton, Westmorland, and Stephen Lormand? (25) Married, Joiner, born Burnley, Lancs.
1861 Census
Things have moved on by the time of the 1861 Census, which sees Thomas living with his brother in Lower Brook Street, Ulverston (no house number recorded). The household is made up of Jonathan Winder (24) Unmarried, Head, Post Messenger, born Aldingham, Lancs; Sarah Winder (53) Widow, Housekeeper (crossed out), born Ulverston, Lancs; Thomas Winder (13) Scholar, born Aldingham; Catherine Moffat (13) House Servant, born Ulverston; Richard Shaw (25) Widower, Lodger, Coachman, born Levens, Westmorland; and William Robinson (20) Unmarried, Post Messenger, born Cartmel, Lancs.
1871 Census
He has moved to Barrow by the 1871 Census, and is living at 27 Mount Pleasant. The household is Isaac Walker (49) Woodman, born Sawrey, Lancs; his wife Margaret Walker (51), born Colton, Lancs; Thomas Winder (24) Married, Labourer, born Baycliff, Lancs; and his wife Elizabeth Winder (31) born Waberthwaite, Cumberland.
1881 Census
The 1881 Census sees another move, to 30 Crellin Street, Barrow, where the household contains Thomas Winder (34) Railway Labourer, born Aldingham, Lancs; Elizabeth Winder (39) born Waberthwaite, Cumbs; Sarah J. Winder (9) Scholar, born Barrow; Edward Winder (7) born Barrow; James Duffy (19) Unmarried, Lodger, Labourer, born Whitehaven, Cumbs; Alfred Renals (sic) (25) Unmarried, Lodger, born Austria (or possibly Antrim); James Cooper (25) Lodger, Labourer in Ironworks, born Lillishall, Salop; and a second household at the same address: Peter Mottram (27) Core (sic) Maker, born Manchester, Lancs; and his wife Jane Mottram (28), born Seagglesthorpe (sic – should be Sigglesthorpe, nr Hornsea), Yorks. A core maker was someone who made sand cores for casting metal.
1891 Census
They are still at 30 Crellin Street in the 1891 Census. Head Thomas Winder (mis-transcribed as Wender throughout this entry) (43) Railway Signal Fitter, born Baycliff, Lancs; shares the house with family of Wife Elizabeth Winder (50), born Waberthwaite, Cumberland; Daughter Sarah Jane Winder (19) Dressmaker, born Barrow; Son Edward Winder (17) Ship Wright apprentice, born Barrow; and Boarder A. Mitchell (28) Single, Machine Fitter, born Bath, Somersetshire (sic).
1901 Census
The 1901 Census has Thomas Winder (53) Railway Signal Fitter, born Baycliffe, Lancs. living at 319 Rawlinson Street, Barrow, with his wife Elizabeth Winder (59) born Waberthwaite, Cumberland; son Edward C. Winder (27) Single, Shipwright, born Barrow, and daughter Sarah J. C. Winder (29) Single, Dressmaker (own account, at home), born Barrow.
[Edward C. Winder married Lizzie Vickers at St. George, Barrow in 1902.
Sarah J. C. Winder married John E. Rawlinson at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hindpool Road, in 1902.
Thomas Winder Rawlinson (mother’s maiden name Winder) was registered in Barrow in 1903.

1911 Census
They were still at 319 Rawlinson Street in the 1911 Census. Thomas Winder (63) Signal Cleaner & Repairer, born Aldingham, Lancs, shares the house with wife Elizabeth Winder (70), born Newbiggin, Cumberland, to whom he has been married for 40 years, had two children, one still alive (see above). Grandson Thomas Winder Rawlinson (8) School, born Barrow, completes the household.
No-one is certain why Edward Sankey took photographs of graves in the period 1910-1920ff. Were they advertising the skills of his friend William Hull, or later Hull and Fairbairn? Were they to be made into postcards that the bereaved family could send to members who were not able to attend the funeral?
