MR. F. N. ROBERTS, BARROW

There was a representative gathering at the funeral at Barrow on Tuesday of Mr. Frederick Norman Roberts, of 13, Park-drive, a prominent and useful citizen.

Mr. Roberts, who died on Friday week, was secretary for Messrs T. F. Butler, Ltd., Duke-street, having served with the firm for nearly 50 years.

He was one of the stalwarts of the Friendly Society movement, being a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites since his early days. He was secretary of the Furness District of the Order for about 20 years.

He was also a member of the Barrow Insurance Committee for 20 years, and chairman of the Medical Benefit Sub-Committee.

Local Methodism, too, is the poorer by his loss. He was a trustee of Abbey Methodist Church, being a keen worker for the Sunday School for 40 years.

He was past president of the Barrow and District Friendly Society.

Mr. Roberts was a widower, and leaves one daughter, who is a school teacher at Leeds.

Carruthers (Ulverston); Mr. and Mrs. Richardson (Pudsey); Miss Duxbury (Leeds); Mrs. Halden, Mrs. Simm, Mrs. Campbell, Miss C. Whatmough, Mr. and Mrs. H. Tomlin, Mrs. E.P. Hartley, Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Frayne, Mrs. E. Brown, Messrs. J. Todd, Angus J. Johnson, W. Tyson, J. T. Price, Boundy (sic), C. F. Jackson, R. Hull, S. Quinney, L. Hughes, W. Hull and G. W. Willis, Mrs. Blakeman, Mr. W.R. Garnett, Mr. T. E. Day. Mr. and Mrs. L.V. Little.

Representatives of T.F. Butler Ltd., were Mr. P.R. Hunt, Mr. A. Palmer, Miss N. Dumphy, and Mr. A. Crossthwaite. Messrs. C.F. Lloyd, L. B. Bartlett, and D. Kirkby, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Hutchinson and Mr. F. Emanuel represented the Independent Order of Rechabites, The Barrow Insurance Committee were represented by Mr. F.W. Fryer, J.P., Mr. E. Williamson, Mr. J.P. Denny and Mr. J. Whitehouse, M.B.E., J.P., Mr. A. Cooper and Mr. A. Baynes were present from the Abbey Methodists Sunday School.

Bearers were Messrs. C.F. Lloyd, F. Emanuel, R.S. Hutchinson and A. Palmer.

Amongst the many floral tributes were those from the Barrow and District Friendly Society Council; Alliance Tent, R.A.O.B., Amethyst Tent, I.O.R., Directors of T.F. Butler, Ltd., Directors and staff of Underwoods (barrow) Ltd., Abbey Methodist Sunday School,  Juvenile Committee, I.O.R., and the officers and committee of the Furness Tent, I.O.R.

L.V. Little and Co. were the undertakers.

There was no obituary for Mrs Roberts in the local press, just this brief death notice.

MRS. E. J. ROBERTS, BARROW

The death occurred on Tuesday of Mrs. E. J. Roberts, wife of Mr. F. N. Roberts, Vice-chairman of Barrow Insurance Committee.

Of a bright and cheery disposition, Mrs. Roberts, who lived at 13, Park-drive, Barrow, was a native of Millom, but came to Barrow with her family about 40 years ago and had lived in the town ever since.

For a long period she sang in the Madrigal Choir and took part in a number of musical festivals at Blackpool. She was a member of the choir of Abbey-road Methodist Church under the leadership of Mr. J. W. Brocklehurst, and was an active worker on behalf of the church as a Sunday School teacher and secretary of the Sewing Meeting, Latterly she was secretary of the War Comforts Fund.
