The Cranke family
There are (at least) three Cranke family graves in Urswick Churchyard. The name is known through two well-known painters: James Cranke the elder (1707 - 1780) and James Cranke the younger (1746 - 1826). According to Wikipedia, James Cranke the elder was father of John Cranke, a famous mathematician of his day. An altar painting by Cranke the elder, of The Last Supper, is in Urswick Church. He built Greenbank in Little Urswick in 1754. A second painting in the Church. Adoration of the Shepherds, is thought to be by James Cranke the younger.

Emily & John Cranke
John Cranke, son of William and Eleanor Cranke, was baptised at Urswick Church on 29 January 1831. According to an entry on Geni website (unchecked by me), he was brother of Margaret Bradshaw; Malachi James Cranke; Eleanor Cranke; William Cranke and Daniel Dickinson Cranke, most of which confirms the 1841 Census details below. The same website suggests that father William Cranke was son of Malachi Cranke and Eleanor Cranke. This Malachi Cranke was the son of James Cranke senior, the artist.
This means that John Cranke was the great grandson of James Cranke senior.

John Crank (no ‘e’) (30) Unmarried, Surgeon, is listed as Nephew.

By the time of the 1871 Census, Mary L. Dickinson (58) Widow, Landowner, is head of that household, and son Joseph Dickinson (25) is a Student of Medicine, but two doors along Fountain Street are John Cranke (40) Unmarried, Surgeon – General Practitioner, born Urswick, Lancs; William H. O’Brien (20) Cousin, Visitor, Clerk at Powder Works, born Ireland; John Thompson (29) Groom, born Urswick; Thomas Wilson (50?) Groom, born Dalton; Agnes Wilson (28) Cook, born Dalton; Sarah Wilson (26) Housemaid, born Ulverston.
A John Cranke married Emily Penny in the third quarter of 1873 in Ulverston.

In the 1881 Census John Cranke (49) Widower, Surgeon in General Practice and J.P. for Lancashire, is still in Fountain Street, probably in the same house as in 1871, since it probably had his surgery in it. It has now got a number: no. 7. George W. Cranke (5) and Emily E. Cranke (4), both born Ulverston share the household, together with Thomas Bradshaw (20) Nephew, Draughtsman, born Madras, India; Margaret C. Bradshaw (20), Niece, born Madras, India; William Wilson (62) Widower, Cow-man, born Kirkby Ireleth, Lancs; John Kendall (22) Groom, born Ulverston; William Kendall (20) Groom, born Ulverston; Ellen Davis (26) Cook, born Llanammon? Cranke (14), daughter, born Ulverston; Thomas Bradshaw (32), nephew, Commission Agent, born India; (See Ulverston Cemetery list) Margaret C. Bradshaw (30), niece, born India. There were 5 servants: Bridget Farrel (46), Cook/Domestic Servant, born Ireland; Martha Postlethwaite (23), Sewing Maid, born Lowick, Lancashire; Mary Dovey (22), Housemaid, born Woodside, Worcestershire; John Howson (72), Garden Help, born Lancaster; and John Thompson (18), Groom, born Ulverston.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1894 has:
CRANKE John of 7 Fountain-street Ulverston Lancashire surgeon died 24th April 1894 Probate Lancaster 25 July to Malachi James Cranke gentleman and Mary Anne Penny spinster Effects £3340 11s 9d. Perhaps Mary Anne Penny was his late wife’s sister.

George William Cranke 1875 - 1928
Baptised 12 July 1875 in Ulverston. Parents John & Emily Cranke.
I have not found him in the 1901 Census, nor his WW1 war record. However, I did find lots of information when searching for his sister Emily Eleanor Cranke (see below). He joined the Royal Lancaster Regiment on 25 July 1894, having spent 2 days with the Royal Artillery before being discharged due to a chest complaint (unreadable). He was transferred to the West India Regiment (2nd Battn.) as Orderly Room Sergeant 1 October 1900. He saw service in Malta, Hong Kong, Singapore, West Indies, West Africa (Sierra Leone), for a total of over 20 year’s service. His next of kin are listed as brother John Cranke, member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and sister Emily Eleanor Cranke, of Rock Cottage, Ulverston. He signed a document to draw his pension on 14 February 1918, while still serving. He was discharged on 19 November 1920, with his character judged “exemplary”. This did include the odd blip: Drunk in barracks, Hong Kong in 1898 – fined 7s 6d. This behaviour is repeated several times, with one episode of “fighting with private”.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census, George William Cranke (35), Single, born Ulverston, Lancs. is a Quarter-Master Sergeant, Garrison Staff, in the list for Bermuda and Jamaica. His trade is listed as Clerk.
On 20 March 1919, George William Cranke (43) embarked from Avonmouth to Jamaica on the Coronado. His position in C.Q.M.S. (Company Quarter-Master Sergeant) in H.M. Army. He arrived back on the same ship from Kingston, Jamaica, on 11 September 1920.
