DR. THOMPSON

We deeply regret to announce the death of Dr. Abram Thompson, which occurred on Wednesday evening at his residence, Lightburne, Ulverston, after a very brief illness. The deceased, who had been in delicate health for some time past, about a month since took a trip to Norway without any beneficial effect resulting. Up to Monday last, however, he was able, in conjunction with his partner, Dr. Fox Jackson, to attend to his professional duties. On Monday evening he unfortunately burst a blood vessel, and despite the skill and unremitting care of Dr. Fox Jackson and Dr. Robinson, he rapidly grew worse, and passed away quietly at 9 a.m. (sic) on Wednesday. The deceased gentleman, who was 60 years of age, was the descendant of a very old and much esteemed Cumberland family, the Thompsons, of Sandford, Drigg, where he was born. He received his earlier training at St. Bees; and commenced his medical education at King’s College, London. He was in practice for some years at Cleator Moor, and on his health breaking down, he went abroad, serving in the American War and New Zealand. Dr. Thompson settled in Ulverston 26 years ago , soon attaining a leading place in the profession. He was medical officer of health for the North Lonsdale Iron Works, from the formation of the company, and also held the important positions of medical officer of health for the Grange and Ulverston Urban Districts, and the extensive rural area now under the jurisdiction of the Ulverston Rural District Council. He has been medical officer for Ulverston almost since the formation of the old Local Board in 1871, his appointment dating from August 1873, whilst his original election for the rural district was made on September 20th, 1883. A firm believer in good sanitation, Dr. Thompson’s valuable reports, and his personal supervision and promptiture (sic) in all cases of outbreaks of disease, have we feel, done much to lessen the death rate of North Lonsdale, to reduce sickness, and to save many valuable lives that might otherwise have been sacrificed; and his duties, difficult though they often were, have always been discharged with efficiency and strict impartiality. Dr. Thompson held various other useful positions in the town’s affairs. Formerly he was a Poor Law Guardian for Ulverston. Under Canon Bardsley he was vicar’s warden, and a member of the National School Committee. He was also a valued member of St. Mary’s sick and poor relief fund committee. As an ardent Conservative worker his services will be much missed. He was a vice-president of the Ulverston Conservative Club, and an ex-chairman of the Management Committee. Those who were brought into frequent contact with Dr. Thompson fully appreciated his kindness of heart (which was hidden to others less familiar with him, under a somewhat brusque exterior), and other sterling qualities. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Thompson and two daughters in their sad bereavement. The funeral id fixed for to-day (Saturday), the cortege leaving the residence for the Ulverston Cemetery at 2.30 p.m.

In St Mary’s Parish Church, Ulverston, is a stained glass window dedicated “To the Glory of God in Loving Memory of Maud Dirga, elder daughter of Abram Thompson M.D. of Lightburne, Ulverston, died April 1st 1908, aged 33 years.”
