William Stables
This is a difficult stone to read. Initially, I was keen to find out about the first William Stables, who died at Euston Station, but found other routes to interest me. I did find out that William Stables lived in Crewe, Cheshire, so presumably was employed on the railway.

National Probate Calendar
The first document I found on Ancestry was from the National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1887 which:
STABLES William 4 February. The Will with a Codicil of William Stables late of Much Urswick in the County of Lancaster who died 12 January 1887 at Much Urswick as proved at Lancaster by Matthew Stables of 19 Cheltenham-street Barrow-in-Furness in the said County Building Inspector the Son the sole Executor.
Personal Estate £423 13 5d (about £59000 in 2021)
William Stables’ grandson Robert, son of Matthew mentioned above, died in WW1: see Robert Cecil Stables Malcolm Stables who died in WW2 and is buried at Urswick may be another relative. Malcolm Stables

1881 Census living at Much Urswick were William Stables (78) Head, Widower, Retired Innkeeper, born Urswick; Mary Stables (36) Daughter, Unmarried, Grocer, born Kirkby Ireleth; Annie Stables (28), Daughter, born Kirkby Ireleth.
1861 Census
1861 Census living at the Punch Bowl, Kirkby Ireleth, were William Stables (58) Head, Innkeeper and farmer of 11 acres, born Urswick; Betty Stables (53) Wife, born Hawcoat; Margaret Stables (25) Innkeeper’s daughter, born Urswick; Mary Stables (17) Innkeeper’s daughter, born Kirkby Ireleth; Richard P. Stables (15) Son, Engine Fitter, born Kirkby Ireleth; Matthew Stables (14) Son, Scholar, born Kirkby Ireleth; Robert Stables (11) Son, Scholar, born Kirkby Ireleth; Annie Stables (9) Scholar, born Kirkby Ireleth.
The Punchbowl was opposite the church gates in Beckside, Kirkby Ireleth.
1851 Census
1851 Census has the Stables family in Kirkby Ireleth where William Stables (48) is an Innkeeper and Farmer of 5 acres; lives with Betty Stables (43) Wife; and the children are Margaret (15) Employed at home; John (13) Scholar; William (11) Scholar; Mary (7) Scholar; Richard (5) Scholar; Matthew (4); Robert (1). Mary Harrison (17) is a House Servant, born Millom, Cumberland; and Robert Benson (47) Boarder, is a Highway Labourer, born Millom.
1841 Census
William Stables (35) was already an Innkeeper in Kirkby Ireleth in the 1841 Census, sharing the household with Betty (30), John (3) and William (1). Presumably Margaret was staying with relatives on the night of the Census.
William Stables married Betty Postlethwaite in Urswick on 16 November 1834.
1871 Census
I eventually found William Stables (67) Widower, Annuitant, born Urswick, in the 1871 Census. He was living in Much Urswick with his daughter Margaret Sykes (35) Widow, Grocer, born Urswick. There was also a House Servant, Elizabeth Holmes (13), born Kirkby Ireleth. Margaret died in 1877.
I am still looking for the accident which killed William Stables jnr.
