Ancestry tells us that Isaac Coulton, son of William and Jane Coulton, was baptized at Kirkby on 16 December 1798.
Isaac Coulton married Ann Parker on 6 May 1825 at Kirkby Ireleth.
1841 Census
In the 1841 Census, which lacked detail, Isaac Coulton (40), Joiner, is living in Kirkby Ireleth with his wife Agnes (40), and his children Roger (14); Jane (12); Nancy (9); George (6) and Joseph (3). Also in the household are Abraham Deason (19), Apprentice, and James Prat? (16), Apprentice.
1851 Census
By the 1851 Census the Coulton family members living at home at Sandside, Kirkby Ireleth, and all born in Kirkby Ireleth, were Isaac (52), a Master Carpenter; Ann (53), Wife; Jane (22), no occupation recorded; Nancy (19), Dressmaker, George (15) Apprentice Carpenter, and Joseph (13), Scholar.
The 1851 Census has Roger Parker Coulton (24), who died on Christmas Day that year, staying as a visitor in Frodsham Street, Chester. He is listed as a Cabinet Maker (Journeyman).
1861 Census
The 1861 Census identifies the family as living at Sandside, where Isaac Coulton (62) Widower, Joiner employing 2 men, shares the household with Jane Coulton (32) Unmarried, no occupation recorded; Nancy Coulton (29) Unmarried, no occupation recorded; George Coulton (25) Unmarried, Joiner; and Joseph Coulton (23) Unmarried, Joiner.
In Slater’s Directory 1869, Isaac Coulton of Sandside appears in the list of Wheelwrights and Joiners.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1868 has:
COULTON Isaac 12 February The Will of Isaac Coulton late of Sandside in the Parish of Kirkby Ireleth in the County of Lancaster Joiner and House Carpenter deceased who died 1 January 1868 at Sandside aforesaid was proved at Lancaster by the Oaths of George Coulton of Sandside aforesaid Joiner and Joseph Coulton of Sandside aforesaid Joiner the Sons the Executors.

1871 Census
The 1871 Census for Sandside, Kirkby has four unmarried Coulton siblings living together: George Coulton (35) Joiner and Builder and Landowner employing one man; Joseph Coulton (33), Joiner; Jane Coulton (42) Servant (Domestic); and Nancy Coulton (39) Servant (Domestic). Note the order in which they appear: males first.
1881 Census
The 1881 Census for Farm House, Sandside, Kirkby has George Coulton (45) House Carpenter employing one man and one boy; Joseph Coulton (43), House Carpenter; Jane Coulton (52) Housekeeper; and Nancy Coulton (49) Housekeeper and Domestic Servant.
1891 Census
The same household is recorded in the 1891 Census, but both brothers are now listed as Joiner and Builder, and both sisters as ‘Living on own means’. The same is true in the 1901 Census, except the brothers are now Joiner/Carpenters.

1911 Census
The 1911 Census has Joseph Coulton (73) Retired Joiner and Builder, living in Sandside. His housekeeper is Louisa Cartmell (38) Widow, and there are two Boarders, both presumably her sons: James Cartmell (15) and Albert Cartmell (9), both school boys.
