Clergymen of Walney

Two tombs, large and elaborate, show a connection between families of clergymen. The first is to Samuel Hunter, the second to his son-in-law, John Troughton.

The Revd Samuel Hunter, who was sixty one Years Perpetual Curate of this Island. He departed this Life
the 18th of November 1802 aged 82 Years.
Also
of Sarah his Wife, who died the 26th of October 1787 aged 69 Years.

MARY TROUGHTON, Wife of Revd
JOHN TROUGHTON, and Daughter of the above Revd SAMUEL and SARAH HUNTER,
Who ended this Life the 26th Day of February 1817.
Aged 61 Years.

TO THE MEMORY OF
the late Revd JOHN TROUGHTON
incumbent of this Chapel for 34 Years, he died on the 29th Day of September 1839, in the 64 Year of his age, esteemed & respected by his parishioners. This stone was erected in filial Piety by an only Son in remembrance of an affectionate Father.

Also of JOHN JAMES TROUGHTON, Son of JAMES & ELLEN TROUGHTON, who died 12th Octr 1849, Aged 3 Days. ALSO IN MEMORY OF
MARY ELLEN TROUGHTON, Daughter of the above who died 16th Feby 1852, Aged 1 Year.
Also of ELLEN,
wife of JAMES TROUGHTON, who died 18th April 1860, Aged 33 Years, Also of THOMAS CRAGG,
Son of JAMES and ELLEN TROUGHTON, who died 20th May 1881, Aged 23 Years. Also of JAMES TROUGHTON,
who died 30th April 1889,
Aged 69 Years.

William Fisher’s Diary records: 28 Feb 1817 ‘Mrs. Trowton of Walney Departed this life Aged 62 years.’

A second entry in the same year tells us: 17 June 1817 ‘the Revd. John Trowton Married to Betty Layland after being a disconsolate awiddower 15 weeks. [Source]
