This is included to illustrate failure. There are Hodiernes in Warwickshire – around Coventry and Aston, Birmingham, at the time of the 1901 Census, but no Victor. The ones that I looked at had jobs like ribbon weaver, watchmaker, .. nothing that may have brought someone to Ireleth or Askam. A Rennie (sic) Hodierne married Mary E. M. Hindle in Barrow in Furness in the summer of 1920. (Cumbria BMD) Noreen Hodierne married Robert J Gould in Barrow in autumn 1943. Were they relatives? Victor’s address in the Burial Book for Ireleth Church is given as Ireleth Road, Ireleth. Why is he buried in Askam? Was he a seaman? Or an Iron miner? There are still Hodierne’s in Lion-sur-Mer, who have been contacted for further information (2015), so far without success. No mention has been found in the local Furness newspapers.

After Victor’s death, Dinah Elizabeth Hodierne emigrated to the USA, arriving on 3 November 1906. Her birth date is given as 23 January 1870, at Ireleth, Lancashire. She sailed on the SS America from Cherbourg, having previously lived in France. She was a Housekeeper living at 272 W90th St, New York City, applying for Naturalization on 30th June 1924, aged 54 years.

There is a family tree (with several overlapping families) to be seen on Ancestry for Dinah Elizabeth (Aunt Tibby) Hodierne.

Victor and Dinah had a son: Rene Armand George Hodierne (25 June 1897 – July 1970), who died in Madison, Morris, New Jersey. He had married Mary E Hindle, and had at least one child, James Armand Hodierne.

Rene, then a student, had travelled to the USA on the SS Campania, on 26 July 1913, aged 16.

Dinah herself, although she had emigrated to the USA, died in LaHarve, (Le Havre???) France, in 1945 or 6.
