FOUND DEAD NEAR HIS HOME

BARROW FARMER WHO WAS DEPRESSED

WORRIED ABOUT FARM AFFAIRS

A VERDICT OF “Suicide while temporarily insane” was returned at the inquest at Manor Farm, Barrow, on Friday afternoon on George Case, 46, a farmer, who resided at the farm, and was found dead with a deep wound in his throat late on Thursday night.

The inquest was conducted by the Coroner for Furness, Mr. F. W. Poole, and Mr. W. C. Kendall, of Ulverston, representing the relatives.

Mrs. Sarah Case said deceased was her husband, and when he returned home from Ulverston about 6.30 p.m. on Thursday he seemed very depressed. He cried and said that he was worried about farm affairs. He had his supper and was very quiet during the evening.

About 10 p.m. he went out, saying that he was going to put some straw in his boots. He had not returned by 10.30 p.m., and she became alarmed. She sent her son to look for him, but he did not find her husband and she sent for the police.

He husband had never threatened to take his own life. The knife (produced) had been left in the drawer of the table in the kitchen.

HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY

She thought that farm affairs had got on his mind, and made him depressed. He had had too much responsibility.

Miss E. Case, of Croslands Park, sister, said that in consequence of what she was told she went into the paddock on the north-east side of the farm and there she found her brother lying on the ground with a deep wound in his throat. That would be about 11.30 p.m. on Thursday. He appeared to be dead.

Her brother had been worried since his father’s death, his father having taken a good deal of responsibility in connection with the farm.

P.C. Lodge described how deceased was found in the paddock with a deep wound in his throat and a blood-stained knife clasped in his right hand.

The Coroner returned a verdict as stated.
