The Hull Family

This photograph from the Sankey Family Photographic Collection, courtesy of Cumbria Archives, is of members of the Hull family, probably at their Monumental Masons’ Yard in Rawlinson Street next to Victoria Hall. Thomas Hull was married to Mary Sankey, one of Edward Sankey’s sisters. Note how a touch of incongruous domesticity has been introduced by the aspidistras at either end of the front row. The photograph was almost certainly taken in 1916.

1. Thomas Hull 1860-1938

Thomas Hull, parents Thomas and Isabella Hull, was baptised at St. John’s, Preston, on 27 May 1860.

1871 Census

1871 Census living at 8 Sidney Street, Barrow (then in the parish of Dalton) were Thomas Hull (34) Labourer, born Churchtown, Lancs.; Isabella Hull (33) no occupation recorded, born Tarlton (sic), Lancs.; Thomas Hull (10) Scholar, born Preston; Henry Hull (9) Scholar, born Preston; and Isabella (1) born Barrow.

1881 Census

1881 Census living at 80 Scott Street, Barrow, were Thomas Hull (44) Engine Driver (Corn Mill) NB this could have been a steam locomotive, or a stationary engine involved in the milling process), born Churchtown, Lancs.; Isabella Hull (42) no occupation recorded, born Tarlton (sic), Lancs.; Thomas Hull (20) Printer (Machine) born Preston, Lancs.; Henry Hull (19) Invalid (crossed out later), born Preston; Isabella Hull (11) Scholar, born Barrow; Richard L. Hull (9) Scholar, born Barrow; Joseph Hull (6) Scholar, born Barrow; John Hull (3) born Barrow; and William Hull (7 months) born Barrow.

Henry Hull died in October 1885.

1891 Census

1891 Census living at 33-35 Greengate Street were Isabella Hull (52) Widow, Housekeeper, born Tarleton, Lancs.; Thomas Hull (30) Letter Press printer and Machine man, born Preston, Lancs.; Isabella Hull (21) Housekeeper, born Barrow – as were the following siblings; Richard L. Hull (19) Tailor; Joseph Hull (16) Apprentice Printer Compositor; John Hull (13) Grocer’s Errand Boy; William Hull (10) Scholar; and Martha Hull (7) Scholar.

1901 Census

1901 Census now at 106 Buccleuch Street, Barrow, were Thomas Hull (40) Letter Press Printer, Employer, born Preston, Lancs.; Mary Hull (33) born Barrow; and Mary S. Hull (5) born Barrow. Mary Hull, née Sankey, is Edward Sankey’s sister. Young Mary’s middle name is Sankey. Thomas and Mary married in 1894.

Thomas Hull died in September 1938. The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1938 has the following, which is probably the right person:

Hull Thomas of 36 Shaftesbury-avenue Penwortham Preston Lancashire died 25 September 1938 Probate Lancaster 1 November to Mary Hull widow. Effects £127 8s.

William Hull, parents Thomas and Isabella Hull (transcribed as Hall by Ancestry) was baptised on 21 September 1880 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Barrow-in-Furness.

1901 Census

1901 Census living at 90 Buccleuch Street, Barrow were Isabella Hull (62) Widow, no occupation recorded, born Tarleton, Lancs.; Richard L. Hull (29) Tailor; Joseph Hull (26) Compositor; John Hull (23) Shipwright; William Hull (20) Stonemason; Martha Hull (17) no occupation recorded. All the siblings were born in Barrow.

William Hull married Annie E Clough/Wilson in Q4 1906 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hindpool Road, Barrow. One of these names is her maiden name, the other her former name after her first marriage.

1911 Census

1911 Census has William Hull (31) Monumental Mason and Builder, living at 12 Westgate Road, Barrow. He is married to Annie Hull (31), born Liverpool, Lancs. and has a child, Henry Winston Hull (9 months) born Barrow. In 1916 twins, Marion and William Hull, were born to William and Annie.

1939 Register

1939 Register the Hull’s are at 4 West Avenue, Barrow. William Hull (DoB 15 August 1880) is a Builder and Contractor; wife Annie Eliza Hull (DoB 23 September 1880) is engaged in Unpaid Domestic Duties, and son William Hull (DoB 11 April 1916) is a Time Clerk at Vickers-Armstrong’s, and in the Auxiliary Fire Service.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1959 has:

HULL William Dalegarth 31 The Drive Ulverston Lancashire died 12 December 1958 Probate Lancaster 26 January to Annie Eliza Hull widow Henry Winston Hull builder and Marion Thompson (wife of Douglas Dilworth Thompson). Effects £4032 5s 2d.

Annie Eliza Hull died at the same address, 28 December 1970, leaving £2936. By 1970 it no longer says to whom probate was granted.

3. Joseph Hull (1875 – 1943)

As above for the 1881, 1891 and (William’s) 1901 Censuses.

Joseph Hull married Bertha Jones on 15 June 1901 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hindpool Road, Barrow.

It appears that he may have had some embarrassment in business (see news clipping from Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser 21 November 1907).

1911 Census

1911 Census living at 52 Warwick Street, Barrow were Joseph Hull (36) Compositor; Bertha Hull (34) Wife; Winifred May Hull (7) no occupation recorded; Arthur Thomas Hull (3) no occupation recorded. All were born in Barrow-in-Furness.

1939 Register

The 1939 Register has them living at 24 Carlton Avenue, Barrow. Joseph Hull (DoB 8 January 1875) is a Stone Machinist; Bertha Hull (DoB 31 January 1877) is engaged in Unpaid Domestic Duties; the next record is redacted; and there are two lodgers, Norman Whiteside (DoB 26 June? 1907). Wholesale and Retail Newsagent, Railway Bookstall Manager; and his wife Nellie Whiteside (DoB 13? April 1908) Unpaid Domestic Duties. A barely legible note next to Norman Whiteside’s record mention “He signed xxxx Oldham Special xxx on Sept 3/39 (after 18 months service) … employed …. Oldham ,,,”

Joseph Hull was buried in Barrow on 9 February 1943, and his wife Bertha in the same grave on 9 September 1954.

I found no record of Probate for either Joseph Hull, or Bertha Hull.

4. Richard Latham Hull (1874-1953)

As above for the 1881, 1891 and (William’s) 1901 Censuses. It is believed that Richard Hull was a Methodist preacher.

1901 Census

There was seemingly some exchange of accommodation in the Hull family: in the 1901 Census Thomas Hull was at 106 Buccleuch Street, and his mother Isabella and five of his siblings were at 90 Buccleuch Street.

1911 Census

In the 1911 Census Isabella Hull, the matriarch, had moved to 106 Buccleuch Street. The household contained Isabella Hull (72) Widow, born Tarleton, Lancs; Richard L. Hull (39) Single, Tailor, born Barrow-in-Furness (as were all the following) Martha Hull (27) Single, Tailoress, etc.; Isabella Healey (41) Daughter, Widow, Confectioner; Edith Annie Healey (15) Grand-daughter, no occupation recorded; Henry Healey (10) Grandson, Scholar.

1939 Register

In the 1939 Register living at 23 Fairfield Lane are Richard L. Hull (DoB 12 November 1871) Tailor and Cutter (Master) and Martha Hull (DoB 28 April 1883) Housekeeper. Both are single. Ancestry again transcribes Hull as Hall.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1954 has:

HULL Richard Latham of 23 Fairfield-lane Barrow-in-Furness Lancashire spinster (!!! sic) died 12 May 1954 Probate Lancaster 23 August to Martha Hull spinster. Effects £842 11s 6d.

Richard and Martha’s grave is very close to William and Annie’s, which is next to Thomas and Isabella’s. All three are just north of, and below, the Crematorium building. Both Richard/Martha’s, and William/Annie’s stones are embossed rather than engraved.

5. John Hull (1878 – NK)

As above for the 1881, 1891 and (William’s) 1901 Censuses.

John Hull was baptised on 19 February 1878 in Barrow.
John Hull married Ellen Johnson in Q4 1904 in Barrow. Their children were William Johnson Hull, born in 1907 (Dob 7 August 1907?, and probably died March 1995 in Plymouth, Devon), and Dorothy Hull, born in 1911. Cumbria BMD

1911 Census

The 1911 Census has John Hull at 24 Shakespeare Street, Barrow. Living there are John Hull (33) Shipwright, born Barrow-in-Furness; Ellen Hull (35) no occupation recorded, born Barrow; and William Johnson Hull (3) born Barrow. If I have the right person, Ellen Johnson had been a school teacher prior to her marriage.

1939 Register

In the 1939 Register, Ellen Hull (DoB 21 March 1876), Married, is living at 16 West Gate Road, Barrow-in-Furness, and engaged in Unpaid Domestic Duties. Joseph Johnson (DoB 31 December 1879) (Ellen’s brother?) is Head of the Household, and a Railway Clerk; his wife is Harriet Johnson (DoB 8 June 1886), also on Unpaid Domestic Duties, and lodging there is James Maddrell (DoB 13 April 1907) Storekeeper Engineers’ Dept, Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd.

I have yet to confirm John Hull in the 1939 Register. He could be John Hull (DoB 28 January 1878) Married, living at 197 Spring Road, Southampton and working as the Assistant Superintendent for the Anglo-American Oil Company Ltd., which had a branch in Barrow. There are no other people living at the same address.

7. Isabella (née Latham) Hull (1838 – 1925)

Isabella Latham was baptised in Tarleton, Lancs. on 26 August 1838. Her parents were Henry Latham, occupation Boatman, and Ann Latham.

1841 Census

1841 Census living in Tarleton were Ann Latham (30) together with her children Alice (7), Janet (5) and Isabella (2). Henry was possibly away with his work. Three of the immediate neighbours are Boatmen.

1851 Census

By the 1851 Census the Lathams were at Back Croft Street, Preston. Henry Latham (45) Sailor, born Tarleton (as were all the following unless otherwise stated) was head of the household, sharing it with Ann Latham (40); Alice Latham (17); Janet Latham (15); Isabella Latham (12); Ann Latham (9); Richard Latham (6); Elizabeth Latham (4) and Mary Latham (1), born Preston. Widowed Mother-in-Law Janet Sumner (78) Boatman’s Widow, born Much Hoole, Lancashire, is the final member of the household.

Isabella Latham married Thomas Hull in Preston 2 October 1859.

1861 Census

The 1861 Census sees the new family living at 3 School Street West, Preston. Thomas Hull (24) is a Carter, born Catterall, Lancs.; Isabella Hull (22) Wife, born Tarleton; and Thomas Hull (11 months) born Preston, comprise the household. Yet again, the family name is transcribed as Hall.

In 1895 Isabella Hull married Thomas Healey in Barrow.

1901 Census

The 1901 Census has the Healeys living at 18 Derry Street, Barrow. Thomas Healey (40) is a Ship Joiner, born Barrow; Isabella Healey (31) is his wife, born Barrow; Robert B. Healey (16) is a House Joiner/Carpenter, born Barrow; Edith A. Healey (5) and Henry Healey (11 months) both born Barrow, complete the household, As can be seen from the grave, Isabella was Thomas Healey’s second wife. Robert Brockbank Healey’s mother’s maiden name was Brennan. Thomas Healey had married Mary E. Brennan in Barrow in 1883. From the dates, it seems that she died in childbirth, or very soon after. Robert Brockbank Healey married Julia Coupe in 1909, and emigrated to Australia in 1912; His wife died in 1925; Robert remarried in 1928, and died in Queensland on 14 May 1952.

1911 Census

In the 1911 Census Robert and his wife were living at 81 West View Road, Barrow.

The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1928 has:

HEALEY Isabella of 22 Hawcoat Barrow-in-Furness Lancashire widow died 10 August 1928 Administration London 1 September to Henry Healey turner. Effects £265.

London Gazette 9 April 1926

Picture 7184 from the collection shows Martha Hull (Right) with cousin Herbert Sankey, and Herbert’s fiancée Ivy Clarke. Herbert Edward Forshaw Sankey was son of Edward's brother John. 1901 Census Herbert, aged 4 is living with Dad & mother Hannah (née Forshaw, born Blackpool) at 83 Wellington Street, Millom. Corporal, later Lieutenant in the Royal Lancs. during WW1. Moved to RAF Sept 1918. Address given as 18 Derry St, Barrow. Died 23 Sept. 1956 at Penwortham, Lancs.
