What a name! I was surprised that I was unable to find an obituary for Mr. Quarrie in the local Barrow papers, though there was a Death Notice, giving his address as 59 Hill Road, and the date of death as 23 February 1949.

Ancestry has difficulty with his name: Dalrymple Marland; Dabrymple Maitland; Dalwymple Maitland; Daniel M. Quarrie all appear.
Dalrymple Maitland Quarrie, son of James and Margaret (née Donnan) Quarrie, was baptised 13 May 1871 in the parish of Andreas, Isle of Man. His father was a farmer. He was possibly named after a prominent local industrialist and politician, Dalrymple Maitland (1848 – 1919).
1881 Census
The 1881 Census living at 66 Anson Street, Barrow were: James Quarrie (60?), Pattern maker, born Isle of Man; Margaret Quarrie (53), born Wigtownshire, Scotland; J.M.A.S. Quarrie (19), single, Milliner, born Isle of Man (as were all the following); Albert J. Quarrie (17), Iron Moulder; Horatio S. Quarrie (16), Iron Moulder; Alfred E. Quarrie (i.e. Ernest) (13), scholar; Daniel (sic – Dalrymple) M. Quarrie (9), scholar.
1871 Census in the Isle of Man
In the 1871 Census in the Isle of Man James was a farmer of 186 acres employing 6 people at 3 Ballaboddan. The family name has been transcribed as Quain. There is a Jesse M.A.L. Quarrie. However, Jessie Margaret A. S. Quarrie married Henry Moss? in Oldham in the 4th quarter of 1887. Her baptism on 6 March 1863 in Andreas, IoM, shows her other names to be Annie Stewart. Mystery solved. Albert J. Quarrie wasn’t Albert, but Alexander John Quarrie. He married Mary E Usher/Watson according to Cumbria BMD. One surname is her birth name, the other the name of her first husband.
1891 Census
The 1891 Census is less clear. At 129 Hindpool Road live the McLaren family of Samuel (30), Insurance Agent with wife Susannah (28) and their 4 children. Along with them were Ernest Quarrie (23), son, single, Distributing Box Man and Margaret Quarrie (64), mother, widow. I haven’t been able to find Dalrymple in this Census. It is unclear what a “Distributing Box Man” was. Could it be the person who emptied the Post Boxes?
British Postal Service Appointment Books 1737 – 1969
However, the British Postal Service Appointment Books 1737 – 1969 show that D.M. Quarrie was appointed Postman in Barrow in Furness in December 1893.
We know what happened to Horatio: The Liverpool Daily Post Wednesday 2 June 1897 reported on an inquest: A SAD DRINKING CASE. – The City Coroner (Mr. T. E. Simpson) held an inquest yesterday touching the death of Horatio Stewart Quarrie, thirty one years of age, a foreman iron moulder, who for the past eleven years had lived in America. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased left New York on the 22nd of last month, sailing in the steamship Campania as a second cabin passenger. On the 24th. Ult. he was removed into the ship’s hospital as he showed signs of delirium tremens. He told the hospital steward that he had been on a terrible drinking bout, and did not remember coming on board the ship. He also said he did not know where he was. When the Campania reached Liverpool he was taken in a cab to the Brownlow-hill hospital, where he died suddenly on Sunday morning. Before he died he told the doctor that he had been drinking heavily for over a year. The medical evidence ascribed death to failure of the heart’s action, induced by excessive drinking. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.
1901 Census
Back to Dalrymple: 1901 Census living at 20 Clive Street, Barrow, were Margaret Quarrie (74), Head, born Scotland; Ernest Quarrie (32), single, Steel worker, born Isle of Man; and Maitland Quarrie (29), single, Inspector of Post, born Isle of Man.
Mr. Quarrie’s work life occasionally led to appearances in the press. One such was 26 October 1905 in Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser and General Intelligencer:

The Barrow Police court was crowded on Friday, when John Bunn, the young Barrow postman, who resides at Cragg-street, was again brought before the magistrates charged with feloniously committing a series of thefts, the articles stolen being the property of the Postmaster General.
Dalrymple Quarry, (sic) inspector of postmen at Barrow, said prisoner had been employed as a postman since 12th March, 1902. Previously he had been a telegraph messenger since 1897. His weekly wage was 21s 6d. It was prisoner’s duty to make collection from Hindpool P.O. on the 12th October at eleven o’clock in the morning. He was due at the head office at 11.15. The packet that Miss Wright had posted would be taken in that collection. It was prisoner’s duty to bring it in to the Post Office and to hand it with his other letters on the receiving table. The package posted by Mrs. Jackson on 19th September should have been collected at 7 p.m. by Bunn.
By Mr Poole: He had known prisoner all the time he had been in the Post Office. He was very civil and well conducted, and witness had known nothing against his character.
Bunn was sent to the Assizes for trial. The same paper of 9 November 1905 reported on the trial, where Bunn had good character witnesses, who said that a 16 week bout of typhoid fever had affected his mental well-being. He was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour.
1891 & 1901 Censuses
Dalrymple married Emily Jane Waite in Barrow in Furness, 4th quarter 1907. Emily Jane Waite appears in the 1891 & 1901 Censuses lived at 38 Lincoln St with parents & sister. Father was a stonemason.
1911 Census
1911 Census living at 59 Hill Road, Barrow were Dalrymple Maitland Quarrie (39), Head, Inspector of Postmen, born Kirk Andreas, Isle of Man; Emily Jane Quarrie (25), Wife, born Barrow in Furness; Alexander Donnan Quarrie (11 months), born Barrow in Furness; Agnes Waite (60), Mother-in-Law, born Broughton in Furness; Annie Agnes Waite (21), Sister-in-Law, born Barrow in Furness. They had also had another child who had died.
Meanwhile, at the same time, brother Alfred E. Quarrie (43) Market Gardner (sic) own account, was living at South View, Kirkby in Furness with wife Mary (44), born St Bees, Cumberland, and son Fredrick (sic) H. Quarrie (1). That was his address when he died on 10 October 1951 at Stanley Hospital, Ulverston.
1939 Register
The 1939 Register gives the birth dates for Dalrymple 5 May 1871 (mis-written as 1911 on Ancestry), Retired Inspector of Postmen, and 18 January 1886 for Emily.
National Probate Calendar
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1949 has Quarrie Dalrymple Maitland of 59 Hill-road Barrow-in-Furness Lancashire died 23 February 1949 at Lancaster Moor Hospital Lancaster Administration Manchester 10 March to Emily Jane Quarrie widow and Ernest Maitland Quarrie civil servant. Effects £2580 0s 7d. Lancaster Moor was a mental hospital. Wikipedia says that it was a pioneering site for the humane treatment of the mentally ill.
Emily died 24 December 1967, still living at 59 Hill Road.
Son Ernest Maitland Quarrie is a Midshipman, appointed December 1935, in the Navy list for April 1939. In July 1939 he is an Acting Sub-Lieutenant. He became a full Sub-Lieut. on 11 January 1940, and a Lieutenant on 1 November 1941. He appears to have been in the Merchant Navy: arriving at Seattle, Washington on the M.V. Lochmonar (Royal Mail Lines) on 24 October 1936 is Cadet Ernest Maitland Quarrie (18), who is 6ft tall and weighs 172lbs.
