“LAST POST” AT DALTON FUNERAL

There was a double military funeral at Dalton Cemetery on Thursday officers and men belonging to the unit of an officer and corporal who lost their lives under tragic circumstances on Monday, filling the cemetery chapel and gathering around the graves besides the relatives.  (NB This is how it was written, grammatical errors and all).

                The remains where those of 2nd-Lieut. S. Johnson, of Dunedin, New Zealand, a social welfare worker in civilian life, and Corpl. J. M. W. Ellis, who was a master at Buxton Grammar School.

                The coffins were covered with the Union Jack, and with the helmets and bayonets of the deceased upon them, were borne by brother officers and sergeants from the Chapel to the graveside.

THE SERVICE

The Rev. L. D. Jones, B.A., S.C.F., conducted the service, assisted by the Rev. O.T. Hughes, M.B.E., B.A., C.F.  The 23rd Psalm was said, and the reading was from 1 Corinthians, 5.

                After the committal buglers sounded the Last Post and the Reveille.  The wreaths placed on the coffin included those inscribed as being from the C.O., officers, sergeants and N.C.O.s of the Battalion, other ranks, and Dalton friends.

                The family mourners were Mrs. Hill, Matron of Turner’s Court Sanatorium, Benson, Oxford), and L.A.C. W. Hill; Mrs Ellis, widow, and her parents.  A number of Dalton friends attended.
