John Goad of Old Newbarns
Michael H Quinn’s “Old Newbarns: A History of Newbarns Village and the Development of the Townfields” 2019 (Pixel Tweaks Publications) tells us that John Goad took over the running of The Farmers Arms, Old Newbarns in 1880. It was a beerhouse, licensed only to sell beer. By 1882 John Goad had died, and the licence was taken by his widow, Mary Goad. In May 1883 she was fined £1 with 15 shillings costs (75p) for selling beer outside permitted hours to someone who was not a bone fide traveller. The same year the pub was sold by its owners (p85/6).
It is surprising that John Goad, who kept his job as a farm labourer while running the beerhouse, is buried in Dendron rather than in the cemetery at Dalton. His headstone is an impressive one, in a prominent position on the path leading up to the church.

The 1881 Census shows the Goad family living at 13 Old Newbarns i.e. the Farmer’s Arms. John Goad (42) Farm Labourer, born Lancashire, lives with wife Mary A. Goad (36); son James Goad (12) scholar; daughter Mary J. Goad (10), scholar; daughter Elizabeth Goad (4), no occupation, all born Lancashire; and boarder James Park (24) unmarried, Labourer, born Westmorland.
1871 Census
In the 1871 Census they had been living in Gleaston. Head John Goad (33) Iron Miner, born Aldingham shared the house with wife Mary Ann Goad (27), born Urswick; sons John Goad (4) and James Goad (2), born Aldingham; daughter Mary Jane Goad (3 months), born Aldingham; and Butler Richardson (81), Widower, wife’s grandfather, annuitant, born Millom, Cumberland; and Roger P. Sharp (13) wife’s brother, scholar, born Aldingham.
John Goad’s marriage to Mary Ann Sharp was registered in Ulverston in Q3 1865.
1861 Census
In the 1861 Census John Goad (23) occupation illegible is living with his parents John Goad (46) Farmer of 66 acres, and Elizabeth Goad (41); plus five sisters and two brothers, all born in Aldingham.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1883 has:
GOAD John 2 June The Will of John Goad late of Newbarns near Barrow-in-Furness in the County of Lancaster Labourer who died 12 November 1882 at Newbarns was proved at Lancaster by Mary Ann Goad of Newbarns Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Personal Estate £1,319 9s 1d. Resworn July 1884 £1548 0s 11d.

1891 Census
After John Goad’s death, Mary remarried. The 1891 Census finds her at 11 Newbarns Village. The household is William Millburn (54) Farmer, born Barrow; Mary A. Millburn (47) wife, born Ulverston; John Goad (25) stepson, Railway Platelayer, born Gleaston; Mary J Goad (20) stepdaughter, no occupation recorded; Elizabeth Goad (14) stepdaughter, farmer’s daughter, born Dalton.
11 Newbarns Village went through various names: Ash Tree Cottage; Ash Tree House; Ash Tree Stores … and is currently (2022) Lynwood Day Nursery. Quinn op cit (p72/3)
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census William, Mary A. Millburn and Mary J. Goad are still at 11 Newbarns Village, Elizabeth having died in 1896. Mary Millburn is now listed as being born in Bardsea.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1907 has MILLBURN Mary Ann of Old Newbarns Barrow-in-Furness Lancashire (wife of William Millburn) died 23 August 1907 Probate Lancaster 14 September to James Goad (police constable) and Mary Jane Cunliffe (wife of John Cunliffe) Effects £615 0s 6d.
