The Sankey Family
Edward Sankey (Junior) was a prolific photographer of life in Furness and beyond, and his work can be seen at sankeyphotoarchive.uk thanks to the co-operation of the Sankey family, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Signal Films and numerous local volunteers. Edward worked in Barrow for the Furness Railway, variously as a Porter, a Carter, and as a Groom for horses. The Sankey project website tells us:
Edward Sankey (senior) was born 1838 in Inskip, Lancashire. He was baptised 21 October 1838 at St. Michael’s on the Wyre, Lancs. Father John Sankey (School Master); mother Alice Sankey.
Wife Isabella Catterall was born 1840 in Claughton, Lancashire
Edward Sankey (Coachman, Abbott’s (sic) Wood Lodge, Furness Abbey) married Isabella Catterall, age 20 yrs (Servant, Lancaster Road, Preston) on 13 May 1860 at St. John’s, Preston. Isabella signed with a mark (X), i.e. she could not read and write.

Edward and Isabella had at least 7 children e.g. 1881 Census living at 65 Smeaton Street, Barrow with their parents were John Sankey (20) Son, Plasterer; Elizabeth Sankey (18) Daughter, Dressmaker; Mary Sankey (13) Daughter, Book Binder; Isabella Sankey (11) Daughter, Scholar; Helen Sankey (8) Daughter, Scholar; Edward Sankey (6) Son, Scholar, and Annie (1) Daughter.
Edward Sankey junior
By the time of Edward Junior’s death most people were cremated rather than buried, with a plaque on the wall near to Barrow Crematorium.
