For 20 years a member of the pilotage service at Barrow, Mr. Charles Richard Raby, of Cliffe (sic) House, Rampside, died suddenly on Tuesday, and was buried at Rampside churchyard on Friday.
Youngest son of the late Mr. Richard Raby, one of the four original pilots for the port of Barrow, Mr. Raby served his apprenticeship as a pilot and was afterwards employed on the Barrow-Fleetwood steamers. Captain of a ship sunk by a German submarine in world war one he was taken prisoner and was awarded the D.F.C. (sic) for his gallantry at the time of his capture.
After the war Mr. Raby served as a master of foreign-going vessels, but later returned to the Barrow pilotage service. He was 66 years of age, and leaves a widow and one son.

Many representatives of the Barrow Trinity House Pilotage Service were present at the funeral at St. Michael’s Church, Rampside, on Friday week, of Capt. Charles Richard Raby, D.S.C. (66), of Cliff House, Rampside, who died suddenly on the previous Tuesday.
The vicar of Rampside, the Rev. H. Robinson, conducted the service.
The deceased’s only son, Capt. W. A. Raby, who is stationed in North Africa, was unable to reach home in time for the funeral.
The family mourners included: Mrs. C. R. Raby, widow; Mr. and Mrs. A. Raby, brother and sister-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Cookson brother-in-law and sister; Mrs. M. Moore (Johannesburg), sister; Messrs. F. W. Raby (Broughton), E. W. Raby (Brighouse), F. E. Raby (Derby), and R. and F. Moore, nephews; Mr. and Mrs. R. Raby, Mr. and Mrs. J. Raby, nephews and nieces; Mrs. J. Wootton (Distington), niece; Mrs. W. Ashburner, sister-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. J. Moore, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Brown (Hull) and Mr and Mrs. A. Forbes, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
The deceased had been a Trinity House pilot for 20 years, and the bearers, who were all members of the pilotage service at Barrow, were: Messrs E. Charnley, R. Raby, G. Charnley, R. Moore, F. Moore and N. Charnley.
The floral tributes included one of red, white and blue flowers in the shape of a flag, from the Barrow Trinity House pilots.
Messrs. W. Ormandy and Sons were the undertakers.
