The Barrow News 24 April 1943 carried the following in its obituary column:
Barrow News, 24 April 1943MR. W. RABY, RAMPSIDE
Mr. William Raby, of East View, Rampside, died at his home on Sunday evening after four months illness at the age of 76, leaving a widow and two sons, one in America and the other at Barrow.
Mr. Raby was a son of the late Mr. Richard Raby, one of the four original pilots of the port of Barrow. He was born at Piel Island. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer with the old Steam Navigation Company, and then sailed in that company’s coasting steamers, and subsequently on the Barrow and Belfast and Isle of Man services. When the latter were taken over by the Midland Railway Company and transferred to Heysham he moved his home to Morecambe, and on returning about 15 years ago he returned to Rampside, where he has since taken a close interest in the church and social functions of the village.
During the last war Mr. Raby was an engineer lieutenant in the R.N.R. serving in vessels on patrol and in carrying troops from Southampton to France and he held the Victory Medal, George Medal (This cannot be the current George Medal which was only instituted in 1940) and the Great War Medal.
1901 Census: Dinah (née Steele) is living in her family’s home, 6 Brisco Road, Egremont along with William W. Raby (aged 1). Others in the household are Jackson & Sarah Steele (Dinah’s parents) and a brother and three sisters, plus a lodger. Father and brother were iron ore miners.
I have been unable to find William Raby on the 1901 Census. Perhaps he was at sea, though some record should have been made.
William Whinnerah Raby can be found on Ancestry. He declares his intention to become a US citizen in Bingham, Utah on 21st February 1928. He had arrived in New York on SS Lancastria 15th October 1926, having been born in Cumberland (Egremont) on 13th December 1899. He gives his occupation as a machinist. There is some confusion over the date of his death: some documents on Ancestry say he died on 5th February 1990.
