George Butcher
George Butcher had a magnificent memorial indicating substantial wealth and status. He built, or at least had built, Tower View, on Prince's Street, Ulverston.

Ulverston Mirror & Furness Reflector 4 April 1868 carried an advert for George Butcher’s Masonry Works in Theatre Street.

Tower View is now 33 Prince’s Street, next to the former Railway Hotel, opposite the Old Station/Mercedes Benz franchise (2017) on Prince’s Street, Ulverston.
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census George Butcher (45) was living with wife, Jane (43) & son at 27 Prince’s Street, and was a Master Stonemason. His 18 yr old son, listed only as G. B., was an Apprentice Stonemason. All three were born in Ulverston. This address is NOT Tower View. Mr. Deason runs the Railway Hotel, then nos 31 & 29 are between it and the Butcher’s home.
1871 Census
In the previous 1871 Census, George Butcher (35), Builder employing 18 men and 7 boys, born Ulverston, shares the household with Agnes Butcher (38), Builder’s wife, born Dalton-in-Furness; George B. Butcher (8), School Boy, born Ulverston; Thomas E. Butcher (10), School Boy, born Ulverston; and Eliza A. Thomas (20), General Servant, born Redruth, Cornwall. Mr. Deason is still running the Railway Hotel.
Agnes Butcher died in 1872.
1861 Census
Ten years previously, in the 1861 Census, George and Agnes had just had Thomas (under 1 year), and were living in Fountain Street. At that point he employed 1 man and 1 boy. They had married at St. Mary’s, Ulverston, on 10 March 1861, probably already expecting Thomas. Agnes’s maiden name was Kendall.
1851 Census
The 1851 Census shows George’s family of origin living at 34 Sunderland Terrace, Ulverston. Father Thomas (56), Brewer, born Liverpool, Lancs; mother Hannah Butcher (43), born Lowick, Lancs; George (15), Stone Mason, born Ulverston; Eleanor (13); William (11); Mary Ann (10) – all Scholars, born Ulverston.
1841 Census
The family had lived on Sunderland Terrace in the 1841 Census, but there were 5 other siblings: Margaret 13); Thomas (11); John (9); James (7); Hannah (5) – possibly George’s twin sister, since he is also 5 yrs old. There is another family named Butcher living next door. The 1841 Census is quite rudimentary, with places of birth not recorded.
George was christened in St. Mary’s, Ulverston on 4 or 5 September 1835 (both dates appear in Ancestry).
From Barrow Times 5 February 1876 noting the death of George’s father Thomas, and an unnamed child of his brother Thomas, who had emigrated.
National Probate Calendar
George’s widow Jane appears in the National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1927 as:
BUTCHER Jane of Grey Rock-view Arnside, Westmorland widow died 13 September 1927 Probate Carlisle 24 October to John Read Storey bank manager and Benjamin Thomas Hudson commercial traveller. Effects £3072 2s 4d.
1911 Census
From this we can identify her in the 1911 Census, 73, living at Greystone View, Silverdale Road, Arnside, Widow, Living on Private Means, born Dalton; and in the 1901 Census (listed as Batcher) living at Hare Hill, Arnside, with her older sister, Ann Crewdson, Widow, Lodging House keeper, both born Dalton.
Marriage records suggest that the young George Burns Butcher (see 1881 Census) married Maggie Chalmers on 11 March 1889 in Ulverston. By the 1911 Census he was living at 33, The Strand, Barrow in Furness, aged 49, a General Labourer. His wife Margaret (49), born Banff, Scotland, and son Robert (19) (listed as Rolant), Apprentice Rivetter, born Barrow. George and Margaret had produced 8 children, but 5 had died.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census the family (again, listed as Batcher) had lived at Swan Court, Lancaster, where George was a Cab Driver & Groom, and Margaret was a part-time Charwoman.
