AUGUST 16TH 1916 AGED 24 YEARS.
The plaque at the front reads ‘In loving remembrance of John, from his brothers and sisters.’
The Barrow News 26 August 1916 reported:
DIED IN INDIA
Many Barrovians will regret to hear of the death of Corpl. John Titterington, which occurred at Lucknow. He was only 24 years of age, and before the war was employed in the tramway service, and was very popular with the travelling public. He was of a most genial disposition, and withal courteous in his dealings with the patrons of the car. He joined the army at the outbreak of the war, and became as popular with his comrades on the field as he had been at home.
The death notice records his parents’ address as 24 Ramsden-street, though by the time CWGC set up their record they had moved to 34 Cross Street, Barrow. He was in the 6th Batt. King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regt.

William Titterington married Ann Wilson at St George’s Church in 1878. Their children (born in Barrow) were James Atkinson (1879); William (1881); Eleanor (1883); Charles Steward (1885); George Wilson (1887); Joseph R. (1889); John Kennaugh (1893) which would make him 23 yrs. at the time of his death, as recorded on the CWGC website; and Edgar Wilcock (1896). There is only one daughter listed, though the plaque says ‘brothers and sisters’.

Corporal John Kennaugh Titterington
Born in Barrow in Furness, enlisted at Ulverston. Overseas 25 May 1915. Shown as having served with both the 2nd and 6th Battalions of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Believed to have been wounded with the 6th Battalion in Mesopotamia (Iraq). Buried in Lucknow Cantonment Military Cemetery, and commemorated on the Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial, India. Son of William and Ann Titterington of 34 Cross Street, Barrow in Furness.
Corporal Titterington’s ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ (as the Memorial Plaque became known) is owned by the King’s Own Museum, Lancaster and can be seen on their website:
