1911 Census
Fanny Elizabeth Neal in the 1911 Census lived at Arlington House, Abbey Road, Barrow. The site is at the corner of Spring Mount, opposite the former church, now (2023) a funeral chapel, and has a modern terrace of houses on it. Arlington house was later the home of Commander Cumming.
In 1911 the household contained Fanny Eliza (sic) Neal (46) born Titchfield, Hampshire, and who had been married for 27 years and given birth to three children, one of whom had died. Her husband was John Henry Neal (60) Builder and Contractor, born Silverstone, Buckinghamshire; others were Harold Neal (16) Apprentice Architect (Shipbuilders), born Barrow-in-Furness; and Lilly Postlethwaite (21) Domestic Servant, born Kendal, Westmorland.
Next door at 198 Abbey Road lived Fanny Bushnell (69) Widow, born Titchfield, Hants. This is Fanny Neal’s mother, as is explicit in the 1901 Census.
Mr. Neal built a number of houses in Barrow. For example, the Barrow Herald and Furness Advertiser 5 August 1911 reports that the Health Committee had approved the building of 12 houses in Hibbert Road, and six houses in Longreins Road, by J. H. Neal & Son, Ltd. Coun. Neal was not present at that meeting. On 12 October the Committee approved 12 houses on West View-road by J. H. Neal & Son, Ltd.
Mr. J. H. Neal was a member of the Liberal Party, and involved in the Young Men’s Temperance Institute at Ramsden Square (e.g. Barrow Herald 28 January 1911).
1901 Census
The 1901 Census has the Neals at West View, Barrow. Husband John Neal is absent, but the household contains Fanny E. Neal (37) born Titchfield, Hants; Ernest Neal (16) Builder’s Assistant, born Barrow; Harold Neal (6) Scholar, born Barrow; Nathaniel Bushnell (65) Navy Pensioner (Retired), born At Sea (sic); and Fanny Bushnell (59) born Titchfield, Hants. I have been unable to find Mr. Neal in the 1901 Census.
1891 Census
In the 1891 Census at 3 West View Road could be found John H. Neal (27) Builder & Contractor, born Silverstone, Northants.; Fanny E. Neal (27) born Titchfield, Hants; and Ernest Neal (6) Scholar, born Barrow.
The 1889-1891 Electoral Register for North Lonsdale has a John Henry Neale (sic) living at 11 Highfield Road, Barrow, and qualifying for voting due to ownership of a property at 43 Back Dalton Road. The Registers for 1894-1895 gives his address as 1 Warwick Street, Barrow, with ownership of the same property on Back Dalton Road.
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census the Bushnell family was living at 70 Cheltenham Street, Barrow. Nathaniel Bushnell (45) is a Navy Pensioner, born Portsmouth, Hants; Fanny E. Bushnell (17) no occupation recorded, born Titchfield, Hants; Thomas E Bushnell (14) no occupation recorded, born Titchfield, Hants; Alice J. Bushnell (7) Scholar, born Titchfield, Hants; and Albert Bushnell (4) born Barrow.
1871 Census
The 1871 Census sees Fanny E. Bushnell (8) and brother Thomas Bushnell (4) living with their grandmother Jane Parsons (54) Widow, Seamstress, in Upper High Street, Titchfield (no house number recorded).
John Henry Neal married Fanny Bushnell in Q2 1883 in Barrow. His first marriage, in 1878 to Elizabeth Wright, had ended with her death in 1879, possibly in childbirth, since a John Henry Neal died in the same year.
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census living at 4 Drake Street, Barrow, were John Tyrell (36?) Laborer (sic) in Steelworks, born Buckingham, Bucks; Rebecca Tyrell (39) born Tingewick, Bucks; Wm. Jos. Tyrell (10) Scholar, born Barrow; Martha Tyrell (7) Scholar, born Barrow; Geo. Hy. Tyrell (5) Scholar, born Barrow; together with Ann Neal (64) Widow, Mother-in-Law, born Buckingham, Bucks; and Jno. Hy. Neal (33) Widower, Bricklayer, born Silverstone, Northants.
1871 Census
In the 1871 Census they were at 26 McLintock Street, Barrow. Widow Ann Neal (55) is Head of the Household, born Buckingham; and the rest of the household is Rebecca Neal (30) unmarried, no occupation recorded, born Tingewick, Bucks; Joseph Neal (24) Married, Fire Man, born Tingewick, Bucks; Amelia Neal (20) Unmarried, no occupation recorded, born Newtown, Staffs; John H. Neal (21) Bricklayer, born Northampton; William J. Neal (7 months) Grandson, born Barrow; and Samuel H. Neal (1 month) Grandson, born Barrow. Presumably William J. Neal was Rebecca’s, born out of wedlock, and possibly Samuel was Joseph’s.
1861 Census
The family was quite mobile: the 1861 Census sees them at a cottage at Rhydd Green, Great Malvern, Worcestershire. Head of the Household is William Neal (45) Brickmaker, born Buckingham; Ann Neal (44) Wife, born (unreadable) Bucks; Hannah Neal (23) Brickmaker, born Buckingham; Rebecca Neal (20) no occupation recorded, born Tingewick, Bucks; Joseph Neal (14) no occupation recorded, born Buckingham; Henry Neal (12), no occupation recorded, born Silverstone, Northants; Sarah A? Neal (10) no occupation recorded, born Silverstone, Northants; Harriett Neal (8) no occupation recorded, born Silverstone, Northants; and a Boarder Daniel Wilkinson (25) Unmarried, Labourer, born Shenstone, Warwickshire (now Staffs – RMW).
No-one is certain why Edward Sankey took photographs of graves in the period 1910-1920ff. Were they advertising the skills of his friend William Hull, or later Hull and Fairbairn? Were they to be made into postcards that the bereaved family could send to members who were not able to attend the funeral?
