An interesting grave with distinctive decoration. Their son John, also a miller at Gleaston Mill, is another entry in the Dendron section of this website.
Both Thexton graves are in the shade of trees.
The death of young James is a family tragedy.

1841 Census
In the 1841 Census George Theckston (sic) (21) is living at Thwaite Mill, Cumberland. Also there are the Miller, John Blackburn (40); his wife Eleanor Blackburn (30); their children Elizabeth (6) and John (4), together with Nancy Kitchen (21), who is an Agricultural Labourer.
George Thexton married Isabella Walker in Q4 1844 in the Bootle Registration District, Cumberland.
1851 Census
By the 1851 Census George has got married, and moved to Gleaston Mill, where he is a Corn Miller, born Dunnerdale, Lancashire. He is 31, and his wife I sabella Thexton is 29, born Urswick, Lancs. They already have five children: Margaret (5); Elizabeth (4); John (3), Eleanor (1) and George (3 months), all born Aldingham (Parish), Lancs. There are a number of servants: John Walker (15) Nephew? Corn Miller’s Apprentice, born Whicham, Cumberland; Ann Smith (21), House Servant, born Dalton; Sarah Coward (19) Bread Baker, born Hawkshead, Lancs; and Margaret Thompson (14) House Servant, born Bo??? Beck, Lancs.
1861 Census
The 1861 Census shows that George has expanded his business. He is now a Corn Miller and Farmer of 18 acres, born Broughton West, Lancs. The rest of the household comprises wife Isabella (39), born Urswick; eight children, all born Aldingham (Parish) and all but the last Scholars, viz. Margret (sic) (15); John (13); Elenor (sic) (11); George (10); Isaabella (sic) (8); Tamer Jane (sic) (6); Mary Ann (4) and Sarah Hannah (11 months). The servants were Elizabeth Harrington (24) Unmarried, General Servant, born Dalton; Joseph Goad (19) Corn Miller, born Aldingham; and Mary Tyson (13) Servant, born Millom, Cumberland.
1871 Census
By the 1871 Census the household had changed further, comprising George Thexton (51) Corn Miller, born Broughton in Furness; wife Isabella Thexton (49), born Urswick; children John (23) Miller; George (20) Miller; Isabella (18) Bread Maker; Mary Ann (14) Scholar; Sarah Hannah (10) Scholar; Matilda (8) Scholar; Louisa (5) Scholar; Amelia (5) Scholar (presumably twins). There are two General Servants, Hannah Fisher (18) and Elizabeth Robinson (14), both born Urswick, Lancs.

In the 1881 Census the household at Gleaston Mill comprised George Thexton (61) Corn Miller, born Broughton, Lancs.; Isabella Thexton (59) born Urswick; John Thexton (32) Son, Married, Corn Miller; Sarah A. Thexton (20) Daughter, Unmarried, no occupation recorded; Matilda Thexton (18) Daughter, Unmarried, no occupation recorded; Louisa Thexton (15) Daughter, Unmarried, no occupation recorded; Amelia Thexton (13) Daughter, Unmarried, no occupation recorded; and Gertrude A. Morphet (10) Granddaughter, no occupation recorded, born Barrow.

THEXTON George. 27 July. The Will of George Thexton late of Gleaston in the Parish of Aldingham in the County of Lancaster Miller who died 7 June 1882 at Gleaston was proved at Lancaster by Robert Ashburner of Gleaston Park Aldingham Farmer John Thexton of Gleaston Miller the Son and Thomas Morphet of Barrow-in-Furness in the said County Draper the Executors. Personal Estate £1952 3s 11d. Resworn December 1882 £2,291 3s 11d.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1883 has:
THEXTON Isabella. 21 December. The Will of Isabella Thexton formerly of Gleaston in the Parish of Aldingham but late of Rampside Barrow-in-Furness both in the County of Lancaster Widow who died 1 November 1883 at Rampside was proved at Lancaster by John Thexton of Gleaston Miller and George Thexton of Silverdale near Carnforth in the said County Lime Merchant the Sons and Thomas Atkinson Morphet of 9 Cornwallis-street Barrow-in-Furness Draper the Executors.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1901 has:

1871 Census
Thomas Atkinson Morphet married Margaret Thexton Q3 1869 in the Ulverston Registration District. In the 1871 Census they were living at 9 Strand, Barrow-in-Furness. Thomas was 30, a Master Tailor and Draper, born Settle, Yorkshire; Margaret was 29, and daughter Gertrude A. Thexton was 9 months old.
Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser and General Intelligencer 17 May 1860 had word of the inquest into the death of James Thexton:
ANOTHER INQUEST was held before W. Butler, Esq., at Richardson Butler’s beerhouse, Gleaston, on Monday, the 14th inst., touching the death of James Thexton, aged 2 years and 3 months, son of Mr. George Thexton, miller, Gleaston Mill, Parish of Aldingham, who was found drowned in the mill beck, near to his father’s house, about 7 p.m. on the 12th. The child got his tea about 5 o’clock, and then went out to play; and nothing further was seen of him until his father went into the house, and missing the child, set out to look for him, and found him in the mill beck. He got him out immediately, but he was quite dead. Mr. Thexton said he had no doubt he had accidentally fallen in while at play. Verdict, “Accidentally drowned.”
