Awarded DFC on 16 Oct 1942: * In September, 1942, Flying Officers Grundy and Coxall were captain and navigator respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack a target in Northern France. Owing to adverse weather, it was impossible to locate the target but, as an alternative, a large industrial plant was vigorously attacked. Whilst flying over the objective, at chimney height, bombs were released and several hits obtained. Both these officers have completed many sorties and have always displayed great determination, combined with a high degree of operational efficiency.

Dennis Grundy's death was registered in St Austell District in Cornwall. He died on 12th December 1944. On that day at 1630hrs a Hawker Hurricane Iic PZ834 of 1697 Air Dispatch Letter Service Flight flew out of RAF Portreath, crashed at Nansladron Farm, Pentewan, St Austell. The aircraft was wrecked and the pilot killed. Presumably Dennis was that pilot. Read More
Lieutenant Grundy was buried in Ulverston Cemetery. The Barrow News 23 December 1944 carried a report of the funeral:
FLT-LIEUT D. GRUNDY, ULVERSTON
R.A.F. colleagues of the late Flight-Lieut. Dennis Grundy, of Ulverston, acted as bearers at his funeral in Ulverston on Monday, and at the close of the impressive service in the Parish Church, bore aloft his coffin covered with the Union Jack as the mourners left the church.
The service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. J. S. Rimmer, R. D., assisted by the Rev. H. G. Underhill, and the choir was in attendance, Mr. W. Rogers being at the organ. It included the Psalm “The Lord is My Shepherd”, the hymn “For all the Saints who from their labours rest”, and Nunc Dimittis.
The chief mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. S. Grundy, father and mother; Miss B. Grundy, sister; Mrs. J. A. Grundy, sister-in-law (widow of Flight-Lieut. J. A. Grundy); Mrs. N. Coates, Mrs. Davison, Mrs. Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Horrocks, Miss D. Horrocks, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Todd, Corpl. Robin Todd, Mr. J. H. Cragild, Mrs. Cousins, Miss Terry, Miss Hobley, Mrs. Lionel Robinson, Lieut. H. Robinson, R.N., Mrs. Rimmer, Mrs. Salmon, Mrs. Lester, Mr. N. H. Rogers, Miss Hawkrigg, Miss Newby, Mr. H. Jenkins, Mrs. E. L. Robinson, Mr. C. P. Roberts, Mr. T. Park, Mrs. Barton, Mrs. G. Randall, Miss Randall, Miss K. T. Stevenson, Mrs. James Randall, Mr. E. Randall, Mr. S. Robinson, Mr. J. W. Floral tributes included tokens from the Commanding Officer C.G.J. Office, warrant officers and senior N.C.O.s of an R.A.F. Station.
Messrs. T. H. Cragild and Sons were the undertakers.

Took off from Snaith for attack on Kassel. 547 aircraft, 24 losses (4.4%). H2S blind marking aircraft overshot the aiming point badly and the visual markers could not compensate due to thick haze. Decoy fires were probably also used by the Germans. The Henschel and Fieseler aircraft factories were hit and the suburb of Wolfshanger was devastated, in part due to an ammunition dump being hit. 118 deaths on the ground.

James Alfred Grundy married Marjorie Turney in the Eastbourne, Sussex Registration District in Q3 1942. It is likely that they met in Ulverston: in the 1939 Register living at the Laurels (Brogden Street) Ulverston is Marjorie Turney (crossed out Grundy) (DoB 23 May 1913) School Teacher, and in the 1911 Census the Turneys were living in Lightburn Road. Father Henry Bertram Turney was a Banker’s Clerk.
