Oscar Massicks Huartson
My interest in Oscar is two-fold. He formerly lived in a house opposite to where I lived (later!) in Abbey Road. He was also mentioned by a correspondent from Australia, whose ancestor in the Thompson family of wine and spirit merchants had married a Huartson.
Oscar Huartson was a coal merchant in Barrow, and became a wealthy man. Until the beginning of the 21st Century a building at the corner of Cornmill Sidings had large tiles spelling out O. M. HUARTSON, in cream on a dark green background. He was also vice-consul for both Norway and Denmark. This meant that he would advise citizens of those countries, usually seamen in Barrow, who needed help e.g. with the law.

Hannah Christine Huartson (above) married Robert Thompson at St Paul’s in 1898 (See Thompson Family Vault).
One of the witnesses is Thrine Hausen who Dr. Thompson believes to be Norwegian.

1881 Census
In the 1881 Census the Huartson family was at 8 Hindpool Road, Barrow, and consisted of Joseph Huartson (38), Head, Colliery and Shipping Agent, born Ulverston; Hannah Huartson (38), Wife, born Greenodd; Hannah C. Huartson (8), Daughter, born Barrow; Thomas Oscar Massicks Huartson (4), born Barrow. Also in the household were George Banks Huartson (19), Brother (i.e. of Joseph), Clerk, born Ulverston, and George Halvan Gresin(?) (33), Boarder, Clerk, born Norway (Naturalised British subject). Hannah Shepherd (20) was a General Domestic Servant, born Appleby, Westmorland. (See Thomas Huartson, who is buried in Ulverston Cemetery.)
1891 Census
In the 1891 Census the Huartsons were at 4 Newbarns Village. The household consisted of Joseph Huartson (47), widower, Colliery and Shipping Agent, born Ulverston; Hannah C. Huartson (18), born Barrow; and Thomas O. M. Huartson (14), Scholar, born Barrow. Their servant was Margaret Helm (19), born Dalton.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census, Thomas Huartson (24), Shipbuilders Correspondent, is living with Robert Thompson (24), Head, (something – Brewer?) and Spirit Merchant Manager. His wife is Hannah Thompson – Thomas Huartson’s sister, (28), born Barrow, and they have a 1 yr old son, Ronald. There are two servants, Mary Christian (17), nurse, born Colton, and Florence Fellows (23), cook, born Walsall, Staffs.
The 1905 Kelly’s Directory for Lancashire has 2 Huartsons in Barrow:

1911 Census
In the 1911 Census Oscar (no Thomas) M. Huartson (34), Coal Merchant, Employer, born Barrow, Lancs. is a Boarder at 2 Furness Park Road, Barrow. It is run by Theresa E Stevenson (38), Married, Boarding House Keeper, born Dublin. Also present are her sister, her daughter, and one other Boarder.
1939 Register
In the 1939 Register Thomas O.M. Huartson is at 260 Abbey Road. He is described as a Coal Contractor & Distributor, Shipping Agent and Managing Director. Norwegian and Danish Vice Consul. Mary A. Helme (DoB 2 Feb 1897) is the Housekeeper, and Elsie Clarkson (later Bibby) (DoB 5 July 1920) is the Housemaid.

Joseph Hewartson (sic), born 6th Feb 1843 to Thomas and Sarah, was baptised in St Mary’s, Ulverston, on 14th February 1843.
1851 Census
The 1851 Census has the Huartsons living in Nevill (sic) Street, Ulverston. Thomas Huartson (31), Head, Hoop Maker (journeyman) lives with wife Sarah (31) and children Joseph (8), James (5), Frances (3) and Anthony (5 months).
1861 Census
1861 Census: he is lodging with Agnes Taylor (55), Head, Widow, Fundholder, born Kirkby(-in-Furness). He is eighteen years old, and a clerk with a Coal Company. His fellow lodger is Thomas Cockerton (22), Schoolmaster, born Ulverston.
Joseph Huartson married Hannah Massicks at St Mary’s, Ulverston on 24 April 1867. In the 1861 Census she is a House Servant (18) for Charles B. Kennedy of the Mine-owning family, living at Kirklands, Ulverston.
Register for the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons
The Register for the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Hartington Lodge, Barrow records Joseph Huartson, Coal Agent joining on 11th July 1870. A second record shows he resigned on 31st December 1906.
1871 Census
1871 Census: living at 8 Hindpool Road, Barrow are Joseph Huartson (28), Coal Agent, born Ulverston, and Hannah Huartson (28), born Greenodd.
“When the 1891 Census was taken Joseph Huartson, a widower and shipping agent, his daughter, son and a domestic servant were living in the farmhouse which had the address No 4 Newbarns Village. It was Joseph who named the farm `The Yews`. Then in October 1898 he decided, for whatever reason, to “pack it all in” so to speak, although his decision is described more eloquently in the two auction notices which appeared in the local paper:
October 11th.
Sale by auction of The Valuable Contents of His Residence as Mr Huartson is declining housekeeping.
Every single item in the house was offered for sale, from an India Rubber door mat to an expensive silk tapestry.
October 15th.
Sale by auction of all the farming stock from The Yews as Joseph Huartson Esq is declining farming.
Not only was all the livestock offered for sale but also all the farm implements.
Both sales appear to have been successful for Mr Huartson moved a short time after the sale.”

It appears that Joseph remarried after the death of his wife Hannah. A certificate solemnizing the marriage of Joseph Huartson (61), Widower, Colliery Agent, living in St Martin in the Fields, London (father Thomas Huartson – deceased – Timber Merchant) to Mary Ann Champion (51), Widow, from Gravesend (father William George Fox – deceased – wine merchant) on 21st April 1904 can be found on Ancestry. O. M. Huartson is one of the witnesses. Another witness appears to be J. T. Thompson, probably one of the Thompson family mentioned earlier.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census living at 10 Kent Road, Gravesend, are Joseph Huartson (67), Head, living on Independent Means, born Ulverston, Lancashire; Mary Ann Huartson (57), Wife, born Brompton, Kent; and Joyce Mary Stedman (20), Servant, born Grays, Essex.
