Igal Sidaway was born on 27 June 1842, and baptised on 24 July at St. Thomas, Dudley.
1851 Census
In the 1851 Census Igal (written as Higael) Sidaway (8), employed as a Furnace Boy, born Dudley, Worcs., is living with his family at Darby End, Dudley. The rest of the household is Thomas Sidaway (45) Furnace Man, born Dudley (as were the rest of the household); Rosannah Sidaway (44) Wife; James Sidaway (19) Furnace Man; Sarah Sidaway (17) Nailer; Rachel Sidaway (15) Nailer; Hannah Sidaway (13) Nailer; George Sidaway (9) Furnace Boy; Mark Sidaway (6) Scholar; and Ruth Sidaway (4) Scholar.
1861 Census
Igal had moved to Barrow by the 1861 Census, living at 48 Franklin Street. He is living with Samuel Hall (26) Laborer (sic), born Warwickshire; his wife Rachel Hall (25), (Igal’s sister) born Dudley. Worcs.; James Hall (24) Married, Lodger, Furnace Man; Samuel & Rachel’s daughter Jane Hall (1), born Dudley. Igal Sidaway (18) is a Lodger, and another Laborer (sic).
Igal Sidaway married Fanny Roper 28 May 1869, at St Thomas, Dudley. Sadly, the Barrow Herald and Furness Advertiser 31 July 1869 has a death notice for Fanny Sidaway, eight months, daughter of Igal Sidaway, engine tender.
1871 Census
The 1871 Census sees Igal Siddaway (sic) living at 275 Duke Street, Barrow. He is 29, and an Iron Works labourer, born Worcestershire. His wife is Fanny Siddaway (28), born Worcestershire, and they have two children born in Barrow: Sophia (8) and Rachael (7), both Scholars. Nearby at 269 Duke Street is brother George Sidaway (31) Iron Works Labourer, his wife Ann (34), also born Dudley, and their four children and a lodger.
1881 Census
Both Sidaway (transcribed as Siddway) families were at the same addresses in the 1881 Census. NB the ages for some of the following do not match the ages given on other Censuses e.g. Igal should be 39; Frances 38 or 39. At 275 Duke Street were Igal Sidaway (45) General Labourer, born Worcester; Frances Sidaway (42) Wife, born Worcester; and five children, all born in Barrow. They were Sophia (16), Jute Work; R(achael) (14), Jute Work; Igal (9) Scholar; Thom (4) Scholar; Frances (1). There was also a lodger, Fanny Cooper (16), also involved in Jute Work, born Worcester.
In the Barrow Herald and Furness Advertiser 29 October 1887, Igal Sidaway is one of the “assenting burgesses” in nominating F. Fell, photographer, Duke Street, who is standing for election in Hindpool Ward.
1891 Census
Both families had moved from Duke Street by the 1891 Census. At 59 Back Hartington Street North were Igal Sidaway (49) Blast Engine Driver, born Darby End?, Worcestershire; Fanny Sidaway (49) Shopmistress (sic), born Netherton, Worcs.; Igal Sidaway (16) Size Marker on Plates; born Barrow (as were all the following); Thomas Sidaway (14) Hydrailic Crane Driver; Francis Sidaway (11) (Daughter – but spelt with an ‘i’); Roshannah (sic) Sidaway (9) Scholar; Jospeh Sidaway (2). Back Hartington Street North was later renamed Wordsworth Street.
1901 Census
At 59 Back Hartington Street, Barrow, in the 1901 Census were Igal Sidaway (Siddoway) (59) Blast Engine Driver, Iron & Steelworks, born Windmill End, Worcestershire; Frances Sidaway (59) Wife, born Netherton, Worcs.; Thomas Sidaway (24) Plater’s Mill Weighman?, born Barrow; Joseph Sidaway (12) no occupation recorded, born Barrow; John Roper (50) Visitor, Foreman Boilermaker, born Netherton, Worcs.; Joseph Roper (17) Visitor. XXXX Apprentice, born Sunderland, Durham.
The young Igal Sidaway (DoB 2 April 1875) migrated to Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. on the S.S. Lusitania, entering the USA on March 26th 1909. His wife was Harriet (DoB 5 Nov. 1874), born in Leeds, who he had married in Barrow on 21 June 1897. They had two daughters, Gladys and Frances, both born in Cleveland. By 1939 Igal was applying for US Citizenship. His brother Joseph Sidaway (21) followed in February 1910 on the S.S. Umbria, heading for Cleveland. His father is registered as living at 100 Holker Street, Barrow.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1911 has:
SIDAWAY Igal of 59 Back Hartington-street North Barrow in Furness Lancashire died 26 September 1910 Probate London 19 September to Fanny Sidaway widow. Effects £195.
No-one is certain why Edward Sankey took photographs of graves in the period 1910-1920ff. Were they advertising the skills of his friend William Hull, or later Hull and Fairbairn? Were they to be made into postcards that the bereaved family could send to members who were not able to attend the funeral?
