Grundy (49) Architect and Builder (5 men and 3 apprentices) born Bentham, Yorkshire lives with Mary Grundy (46) Builder’s Wife, born Bouth, Lancs; William H. Grundy (21) Carpenter and Joiner, born Ulverston (as were all the children); Sarah E. Grundy (19) no occupation recorded; Samuel Grundy (17) Architect’s Assistant; Tamar Grundy (16) Dressmaker’s Apprentice; Agnes Grundy (13) Scholar; Mary J. Grundy (8); James W. Grundy (8) and John A. Grundy (5).

Soulby’s Ulverston Advertiser and General Intelligencer 1 May 1890 had a brief note:
At the examinations held in London before the Marine Department of the Board of Trade, Mr. John A. Grundy, youngest son of Mr. J. W. Grundy, architect, of this town, passed successfully for 2nd engineer.
The records of the Lodge of Furness (No 995) of the United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons for 1898 show John Alfred Grundy admitted. James Wright Grundy was admitted in 1864; Samuel Grundy in 1881.
John Alfred Grundy married Edith Annie Woodburn on 15 August 1899 at St Mary’s Church, Ulverston.
A document on Ancestry records John A. Grundy’s arrival in the USA on 8 January 1905 on the S.S. Zeeland, sailing from Antwerp, Belgium. He and a ship’s captain are to join “the Belgian Red Start Line Steamer Nederland at Philadelphia.”
The Barrow Herald and Furness Advertiser 30 December 1911 reported:
THE LATE MR J. A. GRUNDY – The mortal remains of Mr. John A. Grundy, youngest son of the late Mr. J. W. Grundy, architect, Ulverston, and formerly chief engineer of the Red Star Line, were laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon in the Ulverston Cemetery, the funeral taking place from the residence of the deceased’s nephew, Mr. S. Grundy, junr., in Richmond-terrace. The cortege consisted of the hearse and five mourning coaches, from the Sun and County Hotels, the chief mourners being: Mrs. Grundy (widow), Mr. S Grundy, senr. (brother), Mrs. Tamar Tyson (sister), Miss Jane Grundy (sister), Mr. James Grundy (nephew), Mr. S. Grundy, junr. (nephew) and Mrs. Grundy, Mr. Reginald Grundy (nephew), Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Gelderd (sisters-in-law). The Masonic lodge was represented by Messrs. Robert Casson, J. S. Whitham, R. Dilworth, T. H. Hayes, J. J. Rose and Charles Wilson. Among the other mourners were Mr. Victor Coward, Mr. John Coward, Miss Coward, Mr. J. Coward (Pennington), Mr. and Mrs. John Woodburn, Mrs. Barnett, Mr. Geo. Thompson (Barrow), Mr. James Robinson, Mr. Richard Robinson, etc. The Rev. C. Lord (vicar of Holy Trinity, Ulverston), and the Rev. J. Ashburner (vicar of Blawith) officiated. A number of beautiful floral tributes were laid upon the coffin. Mr. James Grundy carried out the arrangements.
On June 6th, 1926, at All Soul’s Church, Marylebone, London, Edith Mary Ada Grundy (24) Spinster, of 40 Hawcoat Lane, Barrow, father John Alfred Grundy (decd), Superintendent Engineer, married Leslie Scott Fletcher (24) Average Adjuster, of 1 Langham Chambers, London W1, father Henry Francis Fletcher, Shipping Agent.
