Joseph High was baptised at Pennington on 22 March 1858, son of Bryan (sic) and Elizabeth High.
1861 Census
In the 1861 Census the Highs were living at Loppergarth Village. The household was Brian High (32) Iron Miner, born Cartmel, Lancs; Elizabeth High (29) born Millom, Cumberland; Annabella? High (8) Scholar, born Pennington (as were all the children); John High (8) Scholar; Thomas High (4) Scholar; Joseph High (3) and Betsey High (1).
1871 Census
The 1871 Census they are still at Loppergarth, but the family has grown. Head is Brian High (45) Miner (Iron Ore), born Cartmel, Lancs; wife is Elizabeth High (39) born Millom, Cumberland; and the children at home are all born at Pennington: John High (16) Miner (Iron Ore); Thomas High (14) Miner (Iron Ore); Joseph High (13) Miner (Iron Ore); Betsy High (11) Scholar; Ann High (9) Scholar; Mary J. High (6) Scholar; Miles High (2) and Emma High (1).
1881 Census
They are at Mill House, Pennington in the 1881 Census. The household is now Bryan (sic) High (55) Iron Miner (all birthplaces as previous except if indicated); Eliz. High (49) Housekeeper; John High (26) Iron Miner; Josh. High (23); Betsy High (21) Assistant (Domestic?); Ann High (19) Domestic; Myles (sic) High (12) Scholar; Emma High (11) Scholar; Robert High (9) Scholar; Ann J. High (6) Granddaughter, born Pennington; Margaret High (10 mo) Granddaughter, born Pennington; Jas. Pickthall (26) Son-in-Law, Iron Miner, born Osmotherley; Hannah Pickthall (28) Daughter (Wife crossed out), Needlewoman, born Pennington. It is possible that this Hannah is the same person who was called Annabella in the 1861 Census. Mary Jane High (14) , who married Henry Topham, is working as a servant in the Red Lion Hotel, Market Street, Dalton-in-Furness.
1891 Census
By 1891 the Census shows that Elizabeth High is now a widow, still living in Mill House, while Joseph High (33) Iron Ore Miner, has moved back to Loppergarth. His wife is Jane High (29), born Kirkby, Lancs; and their children, all born Pennington, are Mary High (7) Scholar; John High (5) Scholar; Bessy High (3) Scholar; Annie High (2), and son Bryne High (2 mo). Whether this is pronounced Bryn, or is the enumerator’s attempt at Bryan, is not known.
