Late Mr. Robert Charnley

A large and representative gathering attended the funeral of the late Mr. Robert Charnley, Trinity House pilot, of Roa Island, on Saturday afternoon, at Rampside Churchyard, the service being conducted by the Rev. F. Ashburner, M.A. Although weather conditions were extremely unpleasant, they did not deter many friends from joining the family mourners to pay their last respects to the deceased, who, in addition to being well-known in connection with local shipping circles, was a popular local figure. The family mourners were Mrs. Mather (daughter), Mr. G. Charnley (son), Mr. Harry Charnley (brother), Messrs. John, Lawrence, Kenneth and William Charnley and B. Edgar (nephews), Mr. W. K. Charnley and Geoffrey Charnley (cousins), Mr. Angova (brother-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. A. Raby (brother-in-law and sister), Mr. and Mrs. A. Watson (brother-in-law and sister). Among the general body of mourners were Mr. Wright, Mr. E. Gray, Mr. G. Fielding, Dr. Coffey, Capt. Coates (harbour master), Mr. Taylor (representing Messrs. Fisher, ship-brokers), Mr. Parnham, Mr. Smith (Barrow Paper Mills), Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mr. E. Lauderdale, Mr. R. Kirkham, Mr. J. Moore, Mr. R. Crone, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Yeoman, Mrs. Ainsworth, Mrs. Keay, Mr. and Mrs. W. Raby, Mrs. Emmott, Mr. M. Johnson, Mrs. Crane, Mrs. Geldart and Mr. F. Curwen. The bearers, who were fellow pilots, were Messrs. Crane, E. L. Charnley, Ebb. Charnley, J. Wells, R. Raby and Capt. Raby. The coffin was of plain oak with silver mountings.
