Barrow News 27 November 1897 carried:

FUNERAL OF MR. RICHARD RABY :- On Saturday afternoon, the funeral took place of Mr. Richard Raby, of Roa Island. The service was conducted by the Rev. S. A. Adams, vicar of Rampside, and to show the respect in which the deceased was held, the funeral was largely attended. Mr. Raby was the oldest Trinity House pilot, and all the pilots, with one exception, attended the funeral – Messrs. T. Simpson, F. Curwen, J. R. Wright, R. Charnley, W. Charnley and Harry Charnley. Besides the widow and family there were present: Mr. H. Whinnerah (Manchester), Mr. H. and Mrs. Raby (Glasson Dock), Mr. J. Raby and Mrs. Smith (Overton), Mr. and Mrs. Brennan and Mrs. Hayes (Lancaster), Messrs. F. and A. Whinnerah (Carnforth), Mr. R. and Mrs. Whinnerah (Roosebeck), Mr. W. Whinnerah, Mr. T. Pennington, Mr. Ham, Mr. E. C. Caton, Mr. E. Kendall, Mr. Thomas Morgan, Mr. Helm, Mr. W. Pennington, Mr. Yarwood, Capt. and Mrs. Halsall, Mr. James Walker, Mr. and Mrs. McNair, Mr. L. Howarth, and others from Roa Island, Rampside and Barrow. The coffin was covered in wreaths sent by members of the family and friends. Mr. Ormandy had charge of the funeral arrangements.

A family tree on Ancestry shows him marrying Elizabeth Whinnerah on 10 October 1863, and fathering 8 children:

Francis Samuel Raby 1865 – 1917; William Raby 1866- 1943; Herbert Raby 1868 – 1925; Walter Arnold Raby 1870 – 1931; Fanny Mary Raby 1872 – 1958; Mabel Raby 1875 – (married Isaac Moore 1902); Allan Albert G Raby 1877 – 1955; and Charles Richard Raby 1881 – 1947. Several of the above are buried in Rampside Churchyard.

At the 1891 Census Richard Raby was living at No. 1 Piel Island. He was born at Overton, Lancs, and his wife was born at Aldingham. Their children Mabel (15) and Charles R. (10) were still at home.
