The Barrow News 23rd November 1918 reported:
KILLED IN ACTION
An official notification has this week come to hand that Private Walter Chadwick, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, youngest son of Mrs. Chadwick and the late Mr. Alfred Chadwick, of 6, Casson-street, was killed in action in France on the 31st October. He was buried in a military cemetery at Sauljoir, and a cross with inscription has been placed over his grave. The deceased soldier, a fine, promising young fellow, served his time as a fitter at the North Lonsdale Ironworks. He joined up in May last, and had only been six weeks at the front. He was an old boy of the Dale-street Council School. Mrs. Chadwick’s eldest son, Alfred, is a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, and is at present in hospital in France. He joined the Royal Fusiliers three years ago, and on getting his commission was transferred last January to the Royal Air Force.
CWGC: Buried at ST. SOUPLET BRITISH CEMETERY. He had been moved from Saulzoir Communal Cemetery extension as part of the concentration of war dead. Two of the documents give his date of death as 27th October, with 31st crossed out.
1901 Census
Ancestry shows the Chadwick family living at 38 Neville Street in the 1901 Census. The whole family were born in Ulverston: father Alfred (31) is an iron moulder; mother Maria E. Chadwick (32) has no occupation listed; sister Annie is 7; brother Alfred E. Chadwick is 5; Walter is 3 and sister Elizabeth is 1 yr old.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census they have moved to 6 Casson Street, Ulverston. Alfred Chadwick (41) is now an Iron Founder, working on Blast Furnaces; Maria Eleanor Chadwick (42) still has no occupation listed; Annie Chadwick (17) is a paper bag maker, working for a printers and stationers; Alfred E. Chadwick (15), is a Chemist’s Apprentice; Walter Chadwick (13) is a Billiard Marker in the Liberal Club.
