John Galt
Mr. and Mrs. Galt had their origins in Scotland, but their ornate headstone, in a prominent position, indicated that they made a good life for themselves in Barrow. Or their children did!

John Galt married Janet Cameron in Paisley, Renfrewshire on 31 December 1863.
1861 Census
However, they seem to have had a practice run. In the 1861 Census for Blyth Street, Drypool, Hull, and living as Lodgers with Joseph Hague (26) Labourer, born Newark, Notts; and his wife Maria Hague (27) born Newark, were John Galt (25) Plater, born Scotland, and Jannet (sic) Galt (23) born Scotland.
1871 Census
They had moved south by the time of the 1871 Census, which sees them still in Drypool, Hull, Yorkshire. They are living at 59 Thomas Street, where John Galt (36) is a Boiler Plater, born Scotland. The rest of the household is wife Janet Galt (34) born Scotland; Thomas Galt (8) Scholar, born Hull; Jane Galt (7) Scholar, born Scotland; John Galt (6) Scholar, born Hull; Catherine Galt (3) born Hull; and Elizabeth Galt (1) born Hull.
1881 Census
The 1881 Census sees the Galts at 2D Devonshire Buildings, Barrow. John Galt (43) Ship Plater, born Scotland, shares the flat with wife Janet Galt (41) born Scotland; Thomas Galt (18) Plater, born Hull, Yorkshire; Jane Galt (16) Dressmaker, born Scotland; John Galt (15) Marking off for Platers, born Hull, Yorkshire; Catherine Galt (13) Scholar, born Hull; Elizabeth Galt (11) Scholar, born Hull, and James Galt (3) born Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs.
1891 Census
At 20 Stanley Road, Barrow in the 1891 Census were John Galt (52) Ship Plater, born Scotland; Janet Galt (49) no occupation recorded, born Scotland; Thomas Galt (28) Ship Plater, born Hull, Yorkshire; Catherine Galt (28) Dressmaker, born Hull, Yorkshire; Elizabeth Galt (21) Apprentice Dressmaker, born Hull, Yorkshire; and James Galt (13) Scholar, born Hull, Yorkshire. Next door at 21 Stanley Road were James Galt (47) Iron Ship Plater, born Scotland; his wife Caroline Galt (42) born Wisbech, Cambridgeshire; and children William Galt (19) Apprentice Ship Plater, born Hull, and Caroline Galt (11) no occupation recorded, born Barrow. This is probably John Galt’s brother, with his family.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census living at 20, Stanley Road, Barrow Island were John Galt (63) Iron Ship Plater, born Scotland; his wife Janet Galt (61) no occupation recorded, born Scotland; and daughter Catherine Galt (33) no occupation recorded, born Hull, Yorkshire.
1911 Census
By the time of the 1911 Census they had moved to Haregill Cottage, Dalton-in-Furness. The Head of the household is John Galt (74) Plater (retired), born Paisley, Renfrewshire; wife Janet Galt (71), born Paisley, to whom he has been married for 51 years, having had 11 children, 6 of whom have died; and Catherine Galt (43) Single, no occupation recorded, born Hull, Yorkshire.
I haven’t found any record of Catherine Galt’s marriage to Mr. Hart (see grave inscription).
No-one is certain why Edward Sankey took photographs of graves in the period 1910-1920ff. Were they advertising the skills of his friend William Hull, or later Hull and Fairbairn? Were they to be made into postcards that the bereaved family could send to members who were not able to attend the funeral?
