Tragedy at Askam
A SAD story of a man and his son who went bathing when the father came home from work was told the Furness Coroner, Mr. John Poole, at Askam yesterday.
The man was Leonard Arthur Martin, (37) (sic) a Shipyard labourer, and his son, Arthur Allain Martin, of 67, Steel-street, Askam.
Arthur related how after they had had tea on Monday, he and his father went for a bathe in the channel near the pier at about 6.45 p.m.
His father got into difficulties and called for help. But the boy couldn’t swim and couldn’t reach him. So he ran for help.
When he got back his father had disappeared.
The police stated that after prolonged search they recovered the body on the other side of the channel at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday at low tide.
The Coroner recorded a verdict of ‘accidental drowning whilst bathing in the Duddon’, and expressed his sympathy with the bereaved family.

They had two children: Linda Norris Martin 1953 and David Allin N. Martin 1958.
Linda married Adrian P. Parkinson in Ireleth in 1973. Children with these parents’ names were Simon Peter Parkinson 1985 and Christopher Allin Parkinson 1987.
David A.N. Martin married Susan Leedham at St Mary’s, Walney, in 1984. Children with these parents’ names were Remy Martin 1986; Jamie Martin 1990; Dale Martin 1993, and Elizabeth Martin 1996.
I think that they are all in the Barrow registration district. Arthur & Joan may still be in Askam.
