Edward Hatton
This is a magnificent memorial to someone of Mr. Hatton’s modest occupation. He was obviously well-thought-of by his workmates, who must have contributed to the shield at least.
The shield in Sankey’s photograph, and still present, (above) reads
IN MEMORY OF EDWARD HATTON DIED AUGUST 6TH 1915 AGED 51 YEARS. FROM HIS FELLOW WORKERS.
On the north side of the grave is:
ALSO SARAH
BELOVED WIFE OF JAMES BELL
DAUGHTER OF EDWARD AND
HARRIET HATTON

REST 7 OCTOBER 1920 AGED 26 YEARS.
To which has been added below

ALSO THE ABOVE HERBERT HAROLD
LONGSTAFF
DIED NOVEMBER 15TH 1959, AGED 65 YEARS.
“TILL THE DAY DAWNS”
Between the two Longstaff deaths are two verses of a five verse poem, seemingly known as “The Tapestry Poem” (Official name “The Weavers’ Song”), and attributed variously to Grant Colfax Tullar; Corrie ten Boom (who actually popularised it); and B. M. Franklin.
Some of the tablets are difficult to read in the wrong sunlight.
NOT TILL THE LOOM IS SILENT
AND THE SHUTTLES CEASE TO FLY,
SHALL GOD UNROLL THE CANVAS
AND EXPLAIN THE REASON WHY.
THE DARK THREADS ARE AS NEEDFUL
IN THE WEAVER'S SKILFUL HAND,
AS THE THREADS OF GOLD AND SILVER
IN THE PATTERN HE HAS PLANNED.

No-one is certain why Edward Sankey took photographs of graves in the period 1910-1920ff. Were they advertising the skills of his friend William Hull, or later Hull and Fairbairn? Were they to be made into postcards that the bereaved family could send to members who were not able to attend the funeral?
