YOUNG BARROW OFFICER’S DEATH

We regret to record the death of 2nd-Lieut. Bernard Hamer Haynes, R.F.A. (Royal Field Artillery), only child of Mr. George A. Haynes (assistant secretary, Barrow Hematite Iron and Steel Company), and Mrs. Haynes, Thorncliffe-road. The deceased officer was educated at St. Aubyn’s, Barrow Secondary, and St. Bees Grammar School. He was articled pupil to Messrs. Parkinson, Mather and Co., chartered accountants, Manchester. He enlisted voluntarily in June, 1915, with the Lancashire and Cheshire Royal Garrison Artillery, was stationed at Crosby, Aldershot and Lydd, and Bristol until November 1916, when he entered the Artillery Cadet School at Exeter, granted a commission in the Royal Field Artillery, April 1917. Proceeded to France in June, 1917, and saw active service at Messines, Ypres, and Pilkem Ridge (Third Battle of Ypres 31 July - 2 August 1917). At the latter place he contracted fever, and was invalided to England in August. After being in Plymouth hospital for three months, he was granted home leave, where he died on Thursday last. The loss of Lieut. Haynes will be mourned by a large circle of friends. His manly bearing, with a loving and genial disposition, made him a general favourite with all his associates.

The remains of the deceased officer will be interred this afternoon at three o’clock, and will be accorded the honour of a military funeral.
