The geographical distribution of graves mentioned is interesting: the family was widely distributed. At least one other child, Joseph Huartson, is buried in Barrow Cemetery, where he died in 1916, aged 77 years. (See entry for Oscar Massicks Huartson).
Thomas Huartson was born in Witherslack, Westmorland, in 1819. He married Sarah Clarke at St Mary’s, Ulverston on 24 September 1842. I have been unable to definitively identify him in the 1841 Census.
1851 Census
The 1851 Census has the Huartsons living in Nevill (sic) Street, Ulverston. Thomas Huartson (31), Head, Hoop Maker (journeyman) lives with wife Sarah (31) and children Joseph (8) [see above], James (5), Frances (3) and Anthony (5 months).
1861 Census
In 1861 Census the Huartsons were living in Bridge Street, Ulverston (no house number). The family is father Thomas (41), Hooper – employs 1 man; wife Sarah; children Jane (7), scholar; Sarah A. (5), scholar; and William (1).
1871 Census
In the 1871 Census the Huartsons are still living in Bridge Street, Ulverston. Father Thomas (51), Hoopmaker, employs one man; wife Sarah (50), and children William (11), George (9) and Mary (4) share the house.
1881 Census
In 1881 the Huartsons were living at 3 Canal Head, Ulverston. Their name is mis-transcribed as Muarken. Thomas Huartson (62), Head, Journeyman Hoop Maker, born Witherslack, shares the house with wife Sarah Huartson (60), born Ulverston; daughter Mary (14), scholar, born Ulverston, and son Thomas N. Huartson (11), scholar, born Ulverston.
1891 Census
By the time of the 1891 Census the family had all left, and Thomas (72), Coal Agent, and Sarah were living at 5 Casson Street, Ulverston, though the way it is written makes it look like Capon Street.
William
William’s death is recorded in the UK Register of Deaths at Sea. His ship was the St Clements, and the record was made at Falmouth on 28 August 1880. Copenhagen is mentioned in the record, possibly the port of origin of the voyage. The date of death is given as 15th July 1880, rather than the 16th on the gravestone. The cause of death is given as “supposed fever”.
Regarding William, is it technically possible to be “interred at sea”?

Jane may be the Jane Hewitson (sic) (18), Single, Domestic Servant, born Ulverston, Lancs. living-in at 6 Richmond Vale, Bootle, Lancs., in the 1871 Census. It is the home of Richard Bredin Snr.(41), Head, Widower, Town Councillor and Member of the School Board for Bootle and Corn Merchant, born Ireland; son Richard Bredin Jnr. (14), Scholar, born Ireland; Emily Stewart Bredin (13), scholar, born Bootle; Frederick William Bredin (11), Scholar, born Bootle; Howard Albert Bredin (9), Scholar, born Bootle; and visitor Ann Dudgeon (32), Unmarried, Sister-in-law, born Ireland; and fellow servant Sarah Woods (22), Domestic Servant, born Wolverhampton, Staffs.
By the 1881 Census this Jane Hewitson has moved to 43 South Hill Road, Toxteth Park, Liverpool, where she is a servant (waitress) to Herbert Campbell (50), Head, Cotton Broker, born Everton, Lancs. Also living there are Louisa Jane Campbell (45), Wife, born Dudley, Worcestershire; Colin Fitzwilliam Campbell (19), Student, born Toxteth Park, and three other servants.
James Nelson Huartson
James Nelson Huartson (26) married Frances Wilkinson (29) at St James’, Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, 22 February 1872. James is a clerk, living at 9 Chesterfield Street, father Thomas is a Hooper. Frances’s father Richard Willkinson is described as “Labourer (Dead)”. Ancestry records a child born June 23 1878 to James and Frances, who were living at 101? Brasenose Road, Bootle, in the Parish of St Pauls, Kirkdale, North Shore. Father James is a Warehouseman, and the child is also called James Nelson Huartson. He would be less than 4 months old when his father died. James Nelson Huartson Snr. died in the Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, and his burial record states that he was a shoemaker.
George Banks Huartson
George Banks Huartson was baptised in Ulverston on 23 March 1862. He married Mary L. Vale at St James’, Barrow in 1885.
1891 Census
In the 1891 Census George B. Huartson (29), Ship Broker (Agent), born Ulverston, is living at 117, Algernon Road, Lewisham, Kent. He is married to Mary L. Huartson (30), born Barrow in Furness, and has 3 children, William E. V. Huartson (4), born Wallasey, Cheshire; Carl H. Huartson (3), born Wallasey, Cheshire; and Evelyne B. Huartson (Under 1 month), born Lewisham. Also in the household is mother-in-law Eliza Vale (57), widow, born Bilston, Staffs.
After George’s death, Mary Louise Huartson married the gloriously named Alfred Byard Winter Sheppard, from Frome in Somerset, in the parish church of Willesden, on August 11th 1896. His profession is Mariner, though his father, Thomas Byard Winter Sheppard, is listed on the marriage certificate as “Gentleman”, i.e. lived on a private income. In the 1911 Census Mary Sheppard was living at Parkhurst, 8 Park Road, Wallington, Surrey. Carl F. Huartson (23) is a shipping clerk, born Seacombe, Cheshire, and Eva B. Huartson (20), no occupation, born Lewisham, are still living at home. Her husband is not at home, but I found that he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the RNVR during WW1.
