Leonard Gould and family

Moved from its original position, and leaning against the wall to the right of the churchyard entrance, stands the Gould memorial, alongside a couple of others.  The Goulds were 'husbandmen' at Roosecote, Scales and North Scale.

The Leonard Goulds here take some sorting out:

  • Leonard Gould (1756-1833) Grandfather
  • Leonard Gould (1783 – 1860) Son
  • Leonard Gould (1830 – 1858) Grandson by William
  • Leonard Gould (1826 – 1855) Grandson via Leonard?

Grandfather and grandson (by William) are named on the gravestone in Aldingham Churchyard, while the grandson (by Leonard?) is named on a grave at St. Michael’s, Rampside.

Lancashire Parish Clerk online gives us details of the family:

  • Leonard Gold (sic) was baptised at Aldingham on 19 Dec 1756, son of Joseph Gold and Margaret.
  • Leonard Gold (Jnr) was baptised at Aldingham on 8 October 1783, son of Leonard Gold and Margaret. Abode listed as Scales.
  • Agnes Gold was baptised at Aldingham 18 Dec 1785, daughter of Leonard Gold and Margaret.
  • Anne Gold was baptised at Aldingham 8 Feb 1789, daughter of Leonard Gold and Margaret.
Margaret Gold was baptised at Aldingham 23 June 1791 (born 9 June), daughter of Leonard Gold and Margaret. Abode Scales.

An interesting note is appended: Dr. (daughter) of Leonard Gold of Scales, Husbandman, son of Joseph Gold, Mariner heretofore of Scales, by Margaret his wife, dr. of Thomas Walker of Cockram, Husbandman, by Margaret his wife, dr. of Thomas Geldert of Scales, Husbandman, by Agnes his wife, dr. of Andrew Atkinson heretofore of Dendron, Husbandman.

However, there is another list of GOULDs:

  • Joseph Gould, baptised etc. 10 Oct 1779. Son of Leonard Gould. Abode Scales. Probably son of Leonard & Margaret.
  • Anne Gould, baptised etc. 28 April 1793 (born 28 March 1793), daughter of Leonard Gould and Margaret. This entry has the same note appended, though Joseph Gould is described as a Malster. This is possibly an error of transcription. Presumably the first Anne baptised in 1789 had died.
  • William Gould, baptised 8 March 1795 (born 8 Feb 1795), son of Leonard Gould and Margaret. (Same note; back to Mariner) This is the William Gould named on the Aldingham stone.
  • Elizabeth Gould, baptised etc. 16 June 1797. Daughter of Leonard Gould. Named at the bottom of the gravestone.

At some time the spelling of the name became standardised as Gould.

1851 Census

The Leonard Gould who was living in North Scale in 1851, was most likely the “Grave” of the Gravewick of North Scale in 1848, and again in 1851. [From the “Town Book” of North Scales transcribed by Harper Gaythorpe, quoted in “North Scale” by Dennis Laird 1992, opp. P26]

Joseph Gould of Rooscoat died 1 September 1842 aged 62 years, and is buried at Rampside. I assume that this is the eldest Leonard’s brother.
