J W Pickthall appears on various crew lists, sailing from Liverpool.
1872 Able Seaman on the Sarpedon, having previously served on Ulysses.
1893 (several voyages) Mate Louisianian sailing to the West Indies. On one voyage his address is given as 10 Broughton Drive, Cressington, and his birthplace as Ulverston.

John William Pickthall was baptised 20 April 1852 in Ulverston; parents Richard & Anna.
1861 Census
John W. Pickthall appears in the 1861 Census living at St. Mary’s Place, Church Walk, Ulverston with his family. The household consists of Richard Pickthall (47), Ironmonger (employing 7? Men and 2 boys), born Pennington, Lancs; Anna Pickthall (38), born Halifax, Yorkshire; John W. Pickthall (9), born Ulverston (as were all his siblings following); Charles E. Pickthall (7); James A. Pickthall (4); Samuel Pickthall (2). There was also a servant, Isabella Crewdson (16) General Servant, born Torver, Lancs.
John William Pickthall married Alice Bateson Walker at St. Jude’s, East Brixton, Lambeth, Surrey, on 28 December 1878. His address is given as 141 Dulwich Road, while hers is Garston, Liverpool. Both fathers, Richard Pickthall and Thomas Walker, are identified as clerks.
I haven’t found him on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Censuses. Perhaps he was overseas at the time of these Censuses.
Kelly’s Directory Lancashire 1895
Kelly’s Directory Lancashire 1895 lists him as Captain John W. Pickthall (transcribed as Poikthall). Gore’s Directory of Liverpool and Birkenhead 1900 has John W. Pickthall (transcribed as Piekthall) living at 10, Broughton Drive, Grassendale. He is a Master Mariner.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census John Pickthall (49) is on his ship “City of Liverpool” tied up at Burnage Jetty on 31st March, and the form was returned at Fleetwood the following day. This ship was involved in the coasting trade.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1907 has

The 1881 Census for 40, Chapel Road, Laburnum Terrace, Garston has Alice B. Pickthall (28), Wife, Overlooker in shop, born Ulverston; and Sarah Walker (24) Unmarried, born Ulverston.
1891 Census
They are nearby in the 1891 Census, at 2 Laburnum Terrace. Alice B. Pickthall (bemusingly catalogued as Hide, which is the family next door) (38), Wife, born Ulverston, shares the house with Margaret Grigg (18) General Domestic Servant, born Ulverston.
1901 Census
At the time of the 1901 Census Alice B. Pickthall (47) is living at “Woodville”, Grassendale Park, Garston. She is described as Head of Household (her husband was at sea – see above), and has a General Domestic Servant: Ellen Strickland (28), born Widnes.
By 1908 Alice was living at Edgewood, Grange-over-Sands. The Electoral Registers 1908-1910 says that she qualifies for a vote because she owns Edgewood, and also Abbott hall and Eden hurst. (sic) Bulmer’s Directory 1912 has an entry for her, with Edgewood sited on Rockland Road, Grange.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census Alice Bateson Picthall (sic) (56), widow, born Ulverston, is a Visitor at 29 Princes Street, Ulverston. The other household residents are George Tyrrell Youde (50), Head, Merchant’s Clerk in Hematite Iron Ore Mining industry, born Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey; Alice Maud Youde (49), Wife, born Hammersmith, Middlesex; Dorothy Maud Youde (19), Daughter, Part-time Student, born Richmond, Surrey; and Sarah Grant (19), General servant, born Oban, Argyllshire.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1927 has
PICKTHALL Alice Bateson of Edgewood Grange-over-Sands Lancashire widow died 8 November 1927 Probate Lancaster 21 December to Stephen Hart Jackson (the younger) and Robert Bertrand Jackson solicitors. Effects £7829 13s 4d.
