AJ Newton

CWGC tells us that Albert James Newton was the son of George Thomas Newton and Jessie Newton, of Grange-over-Sands.
The inscription is very personal:
NOT JUST TODAY, JIM
BUT EVERY DAY
WE WILL REMEMBER YOU.
MUM, DAD, JESSIE, EVELYN, SPUD.
The Barrow News 21 July 1945 had news of Guardsman Newton’s funeral:
GUARDSMAN J. A. (sic) NEWTON, ULVERSTON
The interment of the remains of Guardsman James Albert Newton, Grenadier Guards, took place at the Ulverston Cemetery on Wednesday. Aged 20, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Newton, of Grange, and died of wounds received at Numeguen (sic - Nijmegen) in September 1944.
The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Newton, parents; Sergt. Geo. Newton, brother; Jessie and Eveline (sic) Newton, sisters; Mrs. Tosh, grandmother; Kenneth Gee, (representing the Regt.), Mr. and Mrs. W. Pearce, Mr. A. Rushton, Mr. and Miss Beardsworth and Mr. Lamb.
The Grenadier Guards Armoured Division took part in Operation Market Garden, to try to capture two bridges on the road to Arnhem. See theguardsmuseum.com and wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Nijmegen
The operation is portrayed in Richard Attenborough’s 1977 film “A Bridge Too Far”. marketgardenveterans.nl makes reference to Jim Newton’s unit, the King’s Company.
Ancestry tells us that Albert J. Newton’s birth was registered in the Barrow-in-Furness district in Q1 1925. Mother’s maiden name Tosh.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census the Tosh family are living at 8H Sloop Street on Barrow Island. The household is Alexander Tosh (36) Marine Engineer, born Scotland; Mary Tosh (37?) born Ulverston, Lancs; James Tosh (17?) no occupation recorded, born Barrow; Elizabeth Tosh (10) born Barrow; Georgina Tosh (8) born Barrow; and Jessie Tosh (4) born Barrow. Cumbria BMD tells us that Mary Tosh’s maiden name was Iddon.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census George Thomas Newton is living with his birth family in Mill Street, Bakewell, Derbyshire. The Household is father George Henry Newton (50) Cab Proprietor (own account), born Over Haddon, Derbyshire; wife Sarah Ann Newton (47) born Crowle, Lincolnshire (they have had seven children, five still living); George Thomas Newton (23) Gas Works Stoker, Urban District Council, born Bakewell; John William Newton (14) Assistant in Business, born Bakewell; and Harriet Ann Newton (11) School, born Bakewell.
Unusually, the Newtons had four of their children baptised into the Church of England on the same day: 28 January 1894, when Bertha Newton (DoB X July 1885); George Thomas Newton (DoB 2 December 1887); Charles Newton (DoB 1 May 1890); and Esther Mary Newton (DoB 23 September 1893) were all baptised. The family address then was Bagshaw Hill, Bakewell, and the father’s occupation was Ostler.
Jessie Tosh married very young. Her marriage to George T. Newton is registered in Preston in Q3 1914, when she would be 17/18.
1921 Census
In the 1921 Census the Newtons are living at 53 Glasgow Street, Barrow-in-Furness. George Thomas Newton (33) Furnace Man, Corporation Gas Works, Hindpool Road, Barrow, born Bakewell, Derbyshire, shares the house with Jessie Newton (24) Home Duties, born Barrow-in-Furness; and their children Jessie Newton (4), born Barrow; Evelyn Newton (2), born Barrow; and George Henry Newton (4 mo) born Barrow.
