On the Find a Grave website it says: A livery man by trade, he enlisted in the CEF on 25 Sept 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada. Husband of M. Brothers of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His address on his Attestation Papers is given as General Delivery, Calgary. His Service number is given as 20069. He seems to have originally been assigned to the 103rd Regt. Calgary Rifles. He left Quebec on the SS Scandinavian on 4 October 1914. A full medical account from his admission late on 28 June to his death at 2.15 a.m. on 30th can be read in his Personnel Records.
Another document gives his occupation as farmer.
1881 Census
In the 1881 Census the Brothers’ family were living at 5 Benson Street, Ulverston. Robert Brothers (38) sic, Dentist, born Manchester; Elizabeth Brothers (34), born Barrow; A. E. A. Brothers (2), daughter, born Ulverston; Rd. A. Brothers (1), born Ulverston, and General Domestic Servant Eliza Jane Platt (20), born Dalton.
1891 Census
In the 1891 Census the Brothers family were living at 5 Queen Street, Ulverston (Currently 2020, the Antiques shop). Elizabeth Brothers (43), widow, living on her own means, born Barrow, had 3 children, all scholars, all born Ulverston: Annie E. A. Brothers (12); Richard A. Brothers (10), and Arthur R. A. Brothers (7). They still had a servant: Caroline Stuart (17), born Dunnerholme. NB This address is definitely Queen Street.
1901 Census
In the 1901 Census, living back at 5 Benson Street were Elizabeth Brothers (53), widow, living on own means; Richard Ainscow (recorded as Ainscon in Ancestry) Brothers (20), unreadable occupation but could be joiner; and Arthur Robert Ainscow Brothers (17), Apprentice House Furnisher. Their servant was Elizabeth Sarah Coward (20), born Foxfield.
R. A. Brothers sailed from Montreal to Liverpool on the “Lake Manitoba” (Canadian Pacific Line) in May 1906, listed as a farmer. On 27 April 1907 Richard A. Brothers and Mrs. Minnie Brothers, (wife) both aged 26, sailed from Glasgow to Montreal on the “Pretorian” (Allan Line).Their address is North Battleford, Sack (Saskatchewan).
His medals appear to have been sent to his mother rather than his widow. This is explained by the National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) 1923 which has consecutive entries:
- BROTHERS Mignonne of Calgary Alberta Canada widow died 26 July 1915 Administration London 22 October to Charles Gowland signalman. Effects £1327 0s 5d.
- BROTHERS Richard Ainscow of Calgary Alberta Canada died 30 June 1915 at No. 10 Stationery Hospital St. Omer France Administration (with Will) London 3 November to Charles Gowland signalman. Effects £1327 0s 5d
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census Arthur is a chauffeur, living with his mother at 5 Benson St. This may mean that he is his mother’s chauffeur, since further down this page he is listed as “gentleman”.
1871 Census
Elizabeth Brothers’ maiden name was Fisher. In the 1871 Census she was living (age 24) at St Mary’s Mount with father Richard & mother Elizabeth, both 57, and sisters Margaret (26), Mary (14) & Jane (10). More interestingly, at the 1861 Census she was living with her parents and grandparents, William Fisher (85), farmer of 80 acres, and Elizabeth Fisher (77) at their farm in Barrow.
